Well, here it is. Halloween again. And for some of you, at least one of you, this will be the fourth time you have heard this story. For some of you, all the DMer's for instance, it will be the first time you have heard it.
Let me start by saying, this is a true story. I can't explain it, I don't even want to try. I think it would spoil the fun if I found what, exactly happened, but everyone I have talked to has said that this is something they have never experienced, and so... I write.
Let me start off by stating what I believe about the supernatural. I believe there are four types of Supernatural beings. Well... five, I guess. In descending order, there is God, the Angels, human souls, demons, and Satan. That's all. I believe when you die, you go to either Heaven, or Hell, and there is no returning to earth.
I do not believe in ghouls, ghosts, shades, glamours, zombies, creeps, crawls, spooks, ghasts, wights, ghols, werewolves, vampires, spectres, Ogres, trolls, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Langoliers or TommyKnockers (though that's another story for another time- I have heard a TommyKnocker).
So, now that you all know where I stand, allow me to tell my story. And allow me to reiterate, it is all true.
The date is October 31, 1996. The sun has been down for almost an hour and half, and night has fallen on the little town of Union City California. The only people stirring are the trick or treaters out on the street.
Just inside the Union City Border, there is a street. Regents Boulevard. Just down the street, there is a house, #32936. Inside this house, the lights are all off in the front of the house to discourage trick-or-treaters from ringing the doorbell and bugging the occupants.
Inside, there is one person, the mother, upstairs, getting dressed for the tradition. In the family room, there are four other people, the father, and three sisters watching television.
In the front of the house, where all the lights are off, there is a guy laying on the floor with his ear pressed up against a set of earphones which is lying on a tape player.
That's me.
That night, i was recording some music off a cd onto a tape so I could listen to it in my room. The CD was the Goofy Movie Soundtrack. The Tape was just a normal tape, on which nothing weird had ever been recorded.
Until tonight.
I had my ear down by the earphones, so i could hear when the song was over so I could stop the tape.
The song i was recording was "On the Open Road."
In case you have never seen the Goofy Movie, there is a scene at the end of the song, where the words go thusly.
And the Cares we have
Are gone for good
And I'd go with them If I could
The part that says "Are gone for good" is sung by a guy who pops out of a coffin in the movie. Which only adds to the mystery of what happened.
So, here am I, sitting in a dark room, on Halloween night, listening to a song, and then suddenly, a kid outside yells something to his friends.
It was clearly outside. I could tell it was outside.
Shortly afterward, the aforementioned part comes up, and right when the dead guy starts singing, I heard it, and I bolted upright, and looked at the window, but I couldn't tell for sure if it had come from outside. I looked down at the tape, and then lowered my ear, determined to get the rest of the song on tape. As soon as I got my ear within hearing distance, I heard it again.
A chill ran through me, and I suddenly got scared.
I was determined to see the song to the end though. In a few seconds, the song ended, and I hit the stop button, but not before hearing the sound a third time, much more faintly this time though, as if the whatever was making the noise was being carried away.
Which only makes me wonder more what happened.
The song was over though, and I didn't wonder then. Right then, I wanted to be where there was light, and other people, and the only things to hear were coming from the television.
So i went into the other room. Presently, mom came down, and asked if we were all ready. We were, and we left.
The tradition I referred to earlier is our tradition of always going out for pizza on Halloween night. The pizza hut we go to, has a waitress that dresses as a cow. No joke. Isn't that just Utterly Mooverlous? (ha ha ha)
So we went to pizza hut, and we got pizza served to us by the cow, and then we went back home.
Two days later, I had totally forgotten about the weird noise, and I was listening to the music I had recorded. I was absently singing along with the song "On the Open Road" and then suddenly, out of the tape player issues a guttural noise, that sounds like someone yelling. My mouth stopped mid word, and I looked down at the tape player, feeling a chill. The sound came on again, sounding exactly the same, and for the first time in my life, my blood ran cold. I felt my arms, and chest just suddenly go cold, as if the blood has frozen inside. It hasn't happened since, and it was a very weird thing to feel, but it happened. My blood ran cold.
I stared in shock and horror at the tape player, and just barely heard the last yelling sound.
I hit the stop button, and, in a modicum of horror, reached over and turned on my radio, trying to forget about it.
I listened to it the next day, and it was definately there. Whatever the noise was, I had it on tape.
I came to school a few days later and told a friend about it. He asked to see the tape, and I brought it the next day. After school, we listened to it, and he agreed that it sounded like human yelling. He was even able to make a guess what it was saying. he told me, and we listened to it again, and He did have a point. It did sound like what he said it sounded like.
I showed it to a couple other people, and when I told them the story, and what Jeremy said it sounded like, they agreed. it had sounded like that.
Do any of you believe me? Do you believe this happened? Probably not. I wouldn't believe it if i were you. In fact, I wouldn't believe it if i were me, and I am me.
The only reason I know it is a true story, in fact the only reason I know it happened, and it wasn't some crazy dream, the only reason that i still remember it, is because I have the tape that The Voice got recorded on. That's what i refer to it as. The Voice. I don't know whether it was a person outside yelling, though why a person outside would be yelling what Jeremy thought he was yelling, wthout the sound of footsteps, or a car motor, or the rattle of a bike, is beyond me. Besides, I heard a kid from outside, just before I heard The Voice, and I don't think that The Voice came from outside.
I don't know whether is was feedback from the earphones, or whether it was a burst of static. It's hard for me to believe that any kind of feedback, or burst of static could sound that much like a human voice, though.
I've listened to that CD many times since then, and I haven't heard anything on it since, except for what's sposed to be there. Everytime that part of the song rolls around, I close my eyes, and press the earphones against my ears, straining to hear anything, but I never do.
I haven't heard The Voice before or since, and I spose that's a good thing, cause if i did, I would really fear for my sanity, especially at this stressed out point in life.
But that night, Oct 31, 1996, I heard something. I have it on tape. You can hear it too, if you want. I have recorded it onto my computer, and uploaded it to my website, and you can hear it here: This Link here.
There is something recorded on my tape, and I don't know what it is. People who have heard don't know what it is, though they all agree it sounds like a human voice. A human voice saying something a bit garbled, but pretty understandable, if you know what to listen for. A human voice saying something three times over.
A human voice, that sounds like someone yelling at the top of his voice, "Help me."
