Okies, this is my first official movie review, so bear with me as I try to figure out exactly what I am doing. my rating is thusly: 5 Field Mice, Excellent, 1 Field Mouse, horrible. Don't ask me why I chose field mice, it was just the first thing to pop into my head.
(though why anyone would want to see this is beyond me- it's.... bad.)
Summer of Sam is described in the prologue and the Epilogue. "There are 8 million stories in the city [meaning New York City], and this is one of them." If you ask me, though, this isn't a story. this is an epic saga.
The movie went on, and on,and on.
Okay, the story centers on two guys- Vinnie, and Richie. Vinnie, played by John Leguizamo (SP?), is married to a lady named Deanna, who is played by I don't remember who. Richie is played by Adrien Boody, and he has a gf named Ruby, again, I don't remeber who played her.
Off center, there are four other guys, assumingly friends of Vinnie and Richie. Three of them are normal, and one of them is.... well.... homosexual. Blatantly.
Vinnie has a drug habit, a smoking problem, a drinking problem, no job, apparently, and he can't seem to stay monogamous. He cheats on his wife with about 30 different women, and when she finds out, she leaves him.
Richie, though acting strong, and manly, is a closet homosexual.
Anyway, these guys sit around all day, trade drugs for money, and tell each other how manly they are.
Interspersed throughout their ramblings of manhood, are scenes of the Son of Sam Killer killing people. If not that, then scenes of him screaming and yelling in his room, and in general going crazy.
Around the two hour mark, the four off center guys, decide that Richie is the killer, and they harangue Vinnie into luring Richie out of his house so they can beat him senseless and take him into the police.
However, these dimwits don't listen to the news, and have no connection to the real world whatsoever, because if they did, they would know that the Son of Sam was caught just the day before or so.
But, since they have no connection to the real world, they go and beat Richie senseless, and try to drag him off to the police.
Richie's father intervenes, tells the druggies that the Son of Sam was caught, and they let Richie go.
Then, after two and a half hours, the movie ends.
Just as a movie, I give it a rating of Two Field Mice. Mediocre plot, good characters, but there were some down points. Some scenes were just... weird, and some were extraneous (ie, a scene of David Berkowitz, aka Son of Sam, setting up blocks to read "MURDER" and that is it. Nothing more, and he doesn't even kill anyone after that. One of the weird scenes was one with S.O.S. talking to one guy in a calm voice, while the guy yells back at him at the top of his lungs, and all the while, a dog is barking, and none of them can be understood.)
The movie was rated R, and if there was ever a movie that deserved it, this one did.
This movie was horrible. But, since it came from Spike Lee, I guess it would be.
I wasn't counting, but from rough estimates alone, there were
7 scenes where the main centerpiece was Richie's or Vinnie's crotch
at least, AT LEAST 400 uses of F--K
about half as many uses of S--T
Three or four scenes of Satanic Symbols
Lesbian sex.
Threesome sex.
Orgy sex.
Inferences to Gay sex.
Numerous scenes of Hetero Sex wherein the guy is obviously naked, and in danger of showing it all.
One Hetero Sex scene where a ladies breasts are shown.
An obviously gay guy (who goes by the name of Bobby the Fairy)
A scene with maybe four or five crack-ho's all together in one shot.
Now that i think about it, there should have been an NC-17 rating on this movie.
This ain't a movie for little kids.
As a somewhat moral person, I give this movie a rating of 1 field mouse. It was about as low as you could go. I wouldn't suggest this movie to anyone.
Well, I hope I did well. I hope you all enjoy this review. For what it's worth, I knew nothing about the Son of Sam killer (and yes, there really was one- that much I knew), and now I know a little more.
So, I hope I did a good job. feel free to let me know how I did.
Thanks for your time, and until my next review, Siskel and Ebert can have the Balcony, those other two can have the aisle seats, i want the exact middle!!
