James Madison Blackwell - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Born 10/22/1840, Captured at Fox's Gap, Md 9/14/1862, Exchanged 10/2/1862, WIA at Fredericksburg 12/13/1862, October 1863 roll states "deserted 11/8/1863 near Cleveland, Tn" BUT is back on the March/April 1864 roll (dated 10/5/1864) with the notation "WIA at Hanover Junction (Va) 5/27/1864", Received clothing 11/5/1864, No further military record although a descendant provides the information that he survived the war and lived until his death in Oklahoma 4/11/1908, Buried at Duke-Nebo Cemetery in Murray County OK, Brother of Jesse and Andrew Blackwell, Son of John and Talitha Reece Blackwell

John D Boyt - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 31, Shows "deserted 9/16/1862" on rolls from Sept 1862 through Feb 1863, Court Martial Record ANV GO#66 dated 5/25/1863 finds him innocent of desertion but guilty of lesser charge of being AWOL, sentenced to one month at hard labor, Sept/Oct 1863 roll dated 1/14/1864 shows "deserted at Chattanooga 10/4/1863, Carried AWOL on all further rolls, No Federal desertion or POW records

Martin V Brown - Enlisted 3/4/1862, Died at Charlottesville, Va 1/7/1863 of pneumonia, Buried at University of Virginia Confederate Cemetery, His mother Elizabeth Brown filed a death claim in June 1863 stating that previous death claim filed 3/12/1863 by purported wife Rebecca Brown is false and that her son was not married

Merida (Meridith) Brown - Enlisted 3/4/1862 - Present throughout war, WIA (left side & back) by shell at Sailors Creek, Va 4/6/1865 and captured, Died Lincoln General Hospital Washington DC 4/25/1865, Buried in Arlington National Cemetery

Terrell Brown - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 20, 2nd Cpl on Oct 1863 roll, WIA at Gaines Farm (Cold Harbor) 6/1/1864 and on wounded furlough 7/22/1864, 1906 Roster Commission Roll states that he was wounded at Cold Harbor and died from these wounds, In this case it turns out that the 1906 Roster Commission roll was incorrect since he is shown on South Carolina's 1901 roll of pensioners living in Greenville County, He was listed as a class C pensioner which indicates a veteran disabled by wounds, His disabling wound is listed as being to the right thigh

5th Sgt James Calvin Burt - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 18, WIA at Sharpsburg 9/17/1862, 2nd Lt 1/26/1863, Surrendered at Appomattox 4/9/1865, Age 17 in 1860 Dawson County census, Son of Reuben and Mary Caroline Merry Burt, Born 4/28/1843, Died 5/30/1899, Buried at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Dawson County

Reuben Elisha Burt - Enlisted 5/10/1864, Surrendered at Appomattox 4/9/1865, Born 4/9/1846 to Reuben and Mary Caroline Merry Burt, Died 1/13/1924 in Texas, Buried at Texas State Cemetery in Travis County

Jesse Cain - Enlisted 9/23/1861 at Lynchburg, Va, 1906 Roster Commission Roll states "Died in W.Va 11/9/1861", Pension application filed by his widow Mary in the 1890s state that he died between 11/9/1861 and 12/20/1861 in W.Va. or Dublin, Va of measles, In this application three Co E veterans attest to his death from disease as stated in 1861

George Washington Croft - Enlisted 5/16/1862, Born April 1828 in South Carolina, Issued clothing 11/26/1864, No further military record but we know that he survived the war as he applied for a pension, In the application he states that he was furloughed home in January 1865 but could not return to Virginia as Sherman's Federals had blocked the route back so he joined General Wofford's Georgia Militia, Died 1/11/1908

Henry Davis - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 23, Deserted at Fredericksburg 1/23/1863, Arrested 2/12/1863, Court Martial Record ANV GO #41 Dated 3/17/1863 finds him guilty of desertion and sentenced to branding with a "D" on left hand and hard labor for remainder of war, Shows as AWOL on Sept/Oct 1863 and Mar/Apr 1864 rolls, May/June/July/Aug 1864 rolls state "deserted at Petersburg 7/14/1864", A J Reese letter dated 7/20/1864 notes this desertion and describes Davis as a "very poor soldier", He then shows captured at Harrisonburg (in the Shenandoah Valley) on 9/25/1864, Imprisoned at Point Lookout prison until released 5/13/1865, Age 13 in 1850 Lumpkin County census, Son of Thomas and Jemima Davis

James M Dempsey - Enlisted 7/19/1861, Age 15, WIA (back) at Fox's Gap, Md 9/14/1862, Furloughed home 10/13/1862, Feb 1863 roll notes "still gone wounded", No further military record but 1888 pension application states that half of his right shoulder blade was shot away rendering his right arm virtually useless, A doctor's certification confirms this, He further states that he was discharged from the army due to the wound, The fact that he is not shown as AWOL on rolls after Feb 1863 would indicate that this is true, Died in 1917 at Atlanta Confederate Soldier's Home, Buried at Westview Cemetery grave #320, Fulton County, Ga

John M Dempsey - Enlisted 7/19/1861, Age 25, Deserted at Fredericksburg 2/8/1863, Arrested 2/19/1863, Court Martial Record ANV GO#55 dated 4/9/1863 finds him innocent of desertion but guilty of lesser charge of being AWOL, Sentenced to 12 months at hard labor and forfeiture of pay, Deserted at Cleveland, Tn 11/7/1863, No further record

John H Dowdy - Enlisted 8/8/1861, Age 22, Last on Nov 1861 roll, Card for Manuscript #1966 dated 12/6/1863 simply states "died", Actual record in National Archives is a small scrap of paper requisitioning two coffins for the remains of J H Dowdy of Co E & G White of Co B Phillips Ga. Legion, Requisition appears to be signed "G C Thresher - Surgeon in Charge - Sue (or Lue) Springs Hospital", A letter written December 6th 1861 by Jesse R Duke to Dowdy's father, John M Dowdy relates that he died on December 2nd 1861 at Red Sulphur Springs Va. from consumption and pneumonia fever

Jesse Rowland Duke - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 33, Discharged for disability 5/5/1862, Born 9/9/1828, Died 3/25/1920

William M Dyer - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 19, Deserted at Cleveland, Tn 11/8/1863 BUT later records show him captured at Elgin Creek, Tn 6/21/1864, Imprisoned at Camp Douglas prison in Chicago until he takes the Oath of Allegiance to the Union and joins Co I of the 5th US Infantry 4/15/1865, Enlistment shows him to be 22, 5' 6 & 1/2" tall with brown eyes and brown hair, Died at Fort Dodge Kansas Post Hospital on August 6th 1865 from "inflammation of the bladder", Age 8 in 1850 Lumpkin County census, Son of Daniel and Jane Dyer

M H Fields - Enlisted 7/19/1861, Age 24, Born 1837 in North Carolina, Captured near Knoxville 12/5/1863, Oct 1864 roll says AWOL, Later roll states "paroled not exchanged", Jan 1865 roll states "absent", No Federal POW records, Post war pension application states that he escaped from the Federals and went home

Champion Forest - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 28, 1906 Roster Commission Roll states "Died in Dublin, Va", The Legion was only in this area at the end of 1861 and he is not carried on rolls after 1861 so it is highly probable that he was one of the many who died of disease during the 1861 campaign in western Virginia, Age 16 in 1850 Lumpkin County census, Born in SC, Son of Berry and Matilda Forrester

Cpl Hardy D Forest - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 21, Sgt Jan 1863, WIA (both thighs) at Hanover Junction (Va) 5/27/1864, Furloughed home in July 1864, Joined Findley's Regiment of the Home Guard and served out the war in Georgia

A W Gaddis - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Honorably discharged 8/5/1861

William M Gearing (Gerrin) - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 30, WIA at Fredericksburg, Va 12/13/1862, Admitted to Farmville, Va hospital 6/12/1863 with gun shot wound to left eye (he had been at home in Georgia recuperating), Received clothing 11/20/1864, No further military record but he applied for a pension in 1887, His application states that he was hit in the corner of the left eye with a minie ball which ranged around inside his skull and lodged behind his left ear, This wound was received 12/13/1862 at Fredericksburg, A Doctor certified that the bullet is still in his head, that he is blind in his left eye and unable to work, Application also states that he surrendered at Appomattox, but he is not on the parole list, Died 6/19/1917

William F Glass - Enlisted 2/25/1863, Casualty list in 7/2/1864 Richmond Enquirer shows him as WIA between 5/6/1864 and 5/16/1864 indicating that he was wounded at Wilderness or Spotsylvania, Surrendered at Appomattox 4/9/1865, Born in 1828, Died 2/1/1897, Buried at New Harmony Church Cemetery on Cherokee/Forsyth county line

Eli J Grizzle - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 22, Cpl in late 1862, Sgt in 1863, WIA at Knoxville 11/29/1863, Captured and sent to Camp Chase, Paroled/exchanged Feb 1865, Died 3/10/1865 at GH #9 Richmond of chronic dysentery, Buried at Oakwood Confederate Cemetery as E J Grezzetway

Marvin (Marvel) M Grizzle - Enlisted 8/8/1861, Age 23, Teamster, Deserted at Petersburg, Va 7/16/1864, A J Reese letter dated 7/20/1864 notes this desertion and describes Grizzle as "a very poor soldier", No Federal deserter or POW records, Applied for a Georgia veterans pension, Application states that he was furloughed by the quartermaster in August of 1864, joined another unit while home in Georgia and surrendered at Kingston, Ga in May 1865, Age 12 in 1850 Lumpkin County census, Son of John and Sally Grizzle, Brother of William Grizzle

William Grizzle - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Born 4/5/1831, Teamster, AWOL on roll dated 10/5/1864 and all rolls thereafter, He states in his pension application that he was furloughed home in February 1864 while in Tennessee. He goes on to say that he was cut off and joined Finleys regiment Co E and surrendered at Kingston, Ga in May 1865, 21 in 1850 Lumpkin County census, Son of John and Sally Grizzle, Bother of Marvin(Marvel) Grizzle

Coatesworth C Hamilton - Served as a volunteer aide to his older brother Captain Joseph Hamilton when the Legion went north to Lynchburg in August 1861, A November 1861 letter from A F Boyd of Co E mentions that Captain Hamilton had gone home with the body of his brother, 'Coates' Hamilton. In an ironic twist of fate, fifteen year old Coatesworth Hamilton, a cadet at Georgia Military Institute who had been drilling the troops at Camp McDonald, was, at the request of his father, assigned to older brother Joe as a volunteer aide. Dr Hamilton hoped that the youngster would quickly tire of the rigors of the field and return to his studies at GMI. Unfortunately, the firestorm of disease (typhoid, measles and mumps) that swept through the Legion that fall claimed the youngster in November

Captain Joseph E Hamilton - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Stated age as 22 but may have been only 19, WIA (left arm) at Fox's Gap, Md 9/14/1862, promoted to Major 12/18/1862, WIA (right arm) at Knoxville 11/29/1863 per A J Reese letter & January 1864 roll, Promoted to Lt Colonel commanding Legion Infantry Battalion 12/31/1863, WIA (neck) at Cold Harbor 6/3/1864, Absent on wounded furlough until January 1865, Captured 4/6/1865 at Sailors Creek and sent to Johnsons Island prison, Released 7/25/1865, Oath of allegiance shows his residence as Social Circle, Ga, Described as being 5'8" with light hair and blue eyes, Married Julia A Stokes 1/13/1864 , Became a teacher and moved to Los Angeles in 1875, Died there 6/12/1907, There is a VA marker for him at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, Cobb County, Ga but he is actually buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, Ca.

Martin Helton - Enlisted 7/9/1861, Age 16, Present on rolls until sent to hospital in Richmond 5/17/1863 with fever, Transferred to Danville, Va hospital 6/12/1863, Furloughed home from Danville 8/20/1863, Shown on Sept/Oct 1863 roll dated 1/14/1864 as AWOL and on all rolls thereafter, Federal records show that he took the Oath of allegiance 4/16/1864 at Chattanooga but it is not clear whether he deserted or was captured, Age 14 in 1860 Cherokee county census

William H Hendrix - Enlisted 5/8/1862, MWIA (lung) at Sharpsburg, Md 9/17/1862, Died at Richmond GH #9 11/20/1862, Buried in Oakwood Confederate Cemetery Richmond as M H Henrich
