A very dark, serious episode. Although there are one or two light hearted bits, the music and overall atmosphere is still very melancholy. Xena and Gabrielle travel back to the centaur village where Solan lives, for security reasons. Gabrielle meets up with Hope there (not knowing it was Hope at first) and still convinced that her daughter is innocent and that Callisto was bullying her, she sent Hope to Kaleipus' hut where Solan was packing to get ready to leave with Xena after Kaleipus had been killed. Xena finds out that the child who was acting as messenger for Callisto was Hope, and that she was in the same place that Solan was. She runs there only to find Solan dead. Gabrielle kills Hope with poison. At the end, during Solan's funeral Gabrielle says a heartfelt "I Love You Xena", but Xena cannot answer.

This episode is easily one of the best Xena episodes I've seen to date. Truly excellent performances from both Renee and Lucy. The whole episode was teeming with sadness, overflowing with emotion. The one thing that stood out from all the rest was when Xena screams her grief out for her dead child, and Callisto jumps up and listens to that sound with delight. An overall rating of 6/6.
