One of my favourite episodes... not only because Lucy and Renee do a fantasic job but because this episode is full of major acting scenes..especially from Renee who played our lovely Gabrielle magnificently!
The story starts off with Callisto who is locked up in jail... strapped into a chair that ties down her hands, legs, feet, neck and head. (pretty uncomfortable folks!). She is constantly harrassed and taunted by the guards... which, is not a good thing because she manages to break free eventually ... slice open the necks of the guards... and take on a new army comprised of the prisoners from the jail. (this is one tough cookie!)
Meanwhile, our two brave heroines are aproached by Perdicas, who we all know is Gabrielle's very good looking fiance...Or at least was her fiance until she left to roam the lands with Xena. He told Gabrielle that he couldn't stand the thought of living as a warrior a moment longer ... and for a while had thought about taking his own life until he realised that he did have something to live for.... Gabrielle! He then asks her to marry him.
Gabrielle then approaches Xena and tells her what Perdicus has told her. She informs Xena that her answer is no... but she doesn't know how to tell him. Xena asures Gabrielle that she shouldn't say no because of her.. that she should follow her heart...Joxer then approaches and informs Xena that Callisto is free ..... that she and her men have escaped. Xena immediantely thinks of a plan and both Gabrielle and Perdicas follow Xena into battle against Callisto's army. During the battle, Perdicus kills a man and abruptly drops his sword in disgust. He tells Gabrielle that he cannot carry on this way.. and walks off. Xena approaches Gabrielle and asks her what's wrong. She replies.. "The answer is yes Xena... I'm going to marry him." Xena looks concerned.
Perdicus and Gabrielle marry... Joxer and Xena are the witnesses. Gabrielle is concerned for Xena because she will be travelling alone ... and they both will miss eachother terribly.... Xena asures Gabrielle that she will visit so often that Gabrielle will get sick of her. Gab replies "Never". They hug and Xena kisses Gabrielle goodbye. (this was such a sweet scene and watch Xena how teary eyes she gets... she knows in her heart that she will not see Gabrielle as often as she would like). Night draws.. and Gabrielle and Perdicus have their 'wedding night'.
Callisto has now heard of the news that Xena is travelling alone and quickly goes after Gabrielle. She meets up with Perdicas and Gabrielle frolicing in the woods... and decides to have a little chat. She goes Gabrielle but is soon dismissed by Xena who suddenly shows up! (man! She has such good timing!)... not good enough timing to spare the life of Perdicus who is stabbed and killed by Callisto while Xena tried to protect Gabrielle. ;0(
They have a funeral for Perdicus.. and this is where Gabrielle's character does a complete 180. She is so filled with hatred for Callisto that she demands Xena to teach her how to use a sword... Xena says no at first but then agrees unwillingly. Gabrielle is determined to end the life of the woman who ended the life of her love. *Great acting on Renee's behalf! You go girl!* Meanwhile, Xena goes off into the woods... kneels down... and turns to the gods to help her deal with the sitution. She is completely filled with grief over the fact that Gabrielle may do something that she will regret later.... and will end up only hurting herself in the end. Gabrielle hears Xena's prayer but walks off into the night. She then goes to Xena and tells her that she is ready to go back home... and mourn the death of her husband. Xena is relieved and tells Gabrielle to leave Callisto to her.
But instead of doing what she said... Gabrielle heads over to Callisto's camp site and gets herself caught...she has the opportunity to kill Callisto but can't bring herself to do it. and instead.... is tied up to a stake to be burnt alive. Xena shows up... gets tied up also, but escapes... frees Gabrielle and goes after Callisto. They both hound eachother on chariots... until they both fall down a hill and end up standing waist deep in quicksand. Xena gets a hold of her chakrum and whip... and manages to claw her way out but stands in the distance and watches Callisto go under.
