......is a support group program developed for kinship caregivers of children, whether grandparents, or other relatives who are not the children's natural parents. Developed locally through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of Dalton/Whitfield County, this group strives to offer emotional support to each other. Membership in this group includes residents of Whitfield and Murray Counties, along with some from nearby communities. It is the first support group of its kind in the state of Georgia.
Looking to the Future . . .
The current census Statistics estimate that 3.2 million children in the United States are being raised by grandparents or other relatives. This figure has escalated over the last decade, impacting the lives of millions of families in various ways. Family caregivers find themselves in the position of sacrifice and other limitations, and because they have not chosen to become full-time caregivers, but have found that to be their last alternative, they reach out for support. Others in their unique situation can help with advice about courtroom procedure and community resources which can help these families.
Defining Purposes and Goals . . .
First, these people want to make a safe place for those who need care. Second, they offer moral and emotional support for each other. Third, they work for recognition and appreciation for the many grandparents and other family members whose caregiving helps heal shattered families.
Counseling . . .
Through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Agency, the group facilitator is available for support during court appearances or meetings with school officials or attorneys. Privacy and confidentiality are respected in all meetings and conferences. As with all meetings, this service is free of charge.
Getting Involved . . .
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group meets for quarterly activities. Dress is informal, and the atmosphere is one of sharing, often with an invited speaker.
Grandparents "R" Great.
"Ours is a Self-Help Group, so everybody is considered an expert in his
or her own case, understanding the problems and pleasures of unique
situations, and using our energy and creativity to help ourselves and
others. Conversation is respected. Interested grandparents are encouraged
