Gina Giron-Urquiola presents Scenic Diversity of the Philippine Islands

Hi! We all get homesick once in a while, and here are some excellent shots of Mayon and Legazpi City, in Albay, taken by my sister, Sunny Johns, in 1998.

Mayon Volcano

Once listed in record books as having the world's 'most perfect cone' for a volcano, Mayon's cone has been rendered less perfect in a recent eruption this century. Still, it retains its magnificent stance and, against a blue sky and clear skyline, it's one of the Philippines' best attractions.

Tragedy at the Ruins

Part of the attraction of touristing in the Philippines is not only the scenic vistas but the uniqueness of the culture--I think the best part is discovering ruins of old churches and other colonial relics still standing from the Spanish era. The Gagsawn Ruins Park in Daraga is said to present the best view of Mayon, giving an unhampered vista of the perfectly shaped volcano. The ruins of Cagsawa Church, as seen here snapped by Sunny, are all that is left of the Church after the eruption on February 1st, 1814 buried everything in molten lava. Some 1,200 persons who took shelter inside the church were covered in thick, hot, burning lava. All that is left standing is the belltower.

Tragedy at the Ruins

After living abroad and travelling to other countries, visiting our own country and especially going to the provinces is such a quaint experience. There is the heartwarming simplicity of life, generosity, hospitality and a full sense of belonging.
