A-Wing
The A wing is a small, wedge-shaped victorty class craft designed by rebal alliance hero Jan Dodanna. The idea behind the A-Wing was not to create a ship with a lot of firepower, but one that could use blinding speed to outperform its opponents. It was introduced at the Battle of Endor and quickly becomes a major element of the Alliance combat fleet. The lightweight A-wing can outrun any ship in the Imperial Navy, has especially powerful avionics, including a power-jamming system that lets pilots blind enemy targets prior to attack/ Since the A-Wing cannot take a lot of damage, it uses a unique sensor and communication-jamming device. This is only useful against fighters and other small ships, and can sometimes confuse the sensors of the enemy craft and allow the A-Wing to attack and get away before the enemy knows they are there. .
It is armed with two laser cannons amd has concussion missals. The A-Wing carries two wing-mounted blaster cannons (each with their own seperate generator) which can angle up and down sixty degrees; and some are modified to be able to shoot straight back. Since this armament is sometimes insufficient, some A-Wings have dual concussion-missile launchers with 3 missiles each. The concussion missiles have a greater range and are far more destructive than the laser cannons. A-Wing was the fastest ship at sublight in the galaxy.
The ships origional duty was as an escort for merchant ships and wasnot intended as a mafor fighting power for the Rebals. But the Rebals found use for the ship and made it very effective in battle. The A-wing is proving more adept at hit-and-run missions, blasting enemy sites and spacecraft with twin, wing-mounted pivoting blaster cannons and concussion missiles.Although not used extensively by the New Republic, the A-Wing is used as its main interceptor.
The downside of the A-wing's speed and agility is its relatively high vulnerability in dogfighth. The reason is ship is very difficult to fly becuase the high speeds create great stresses against the hull.Also it is lightly armored and has a very small shield generator. The position of the cockpit and its lack of shielding leaves pilots exposed to enemy fire, making the craft's speed even more important. In addion the A-wing is compresses into the hull this makes it so velnerabal even on hit could destroy the major systems critacly damaging it or even incenerate the entire ship, this also makes it difficult to reach some areas during repair.
For this reason, often the pilot's only weapon against the enemy is the ship's extremaly fast speed.The A-Wing is powered by two Novaldex J-77 "Event Horizon" engines, and for maneuvering, uses the centered thruster-control jets and the J-77's ability to adjust the thrust-vector.
