CIVIL WAR ANCESTORS

John D. Dowling - Enlisted in Company E, 1st Confederate Regiment, Georgia Volunteers at Fort Gaines Garrison. In January, 1864 he took part in the battle at Rocky Face, GA, and went through the Atlanta campaign. He was in the battle of Franklin, and was by the side of Colonel Smith when he fell. He was among the few who went over the breastworks in the charge. He went between the lines to rescue his Company's Colors, three had fallen in the attempt. He was in the battle of Nashville and was captured in December 16, 1864, sent to Camp Douglas, IL., and released in June, 1865

Private - May 1, 1862. "Traitor" Deserted July 1864. Took oath of allegiance to U. S. Government at Louisille, Kentucky July 16, 1864

Private - May 1, 1862. Discharged, furnished substitute, April 1, 1863.

EDWARD R. MCCLAIN

Private - March 18, 1861. Elected 2nd Lieutenant March 11, 1862; 1st Lieutenant August 16, 1862. Wounded at Kennesaw which later died from and was buried in Mobile, AL.

WILLIAM S. MCCLAIN

Enlised in 1862 and served in Company G, 11th Georgia Regiment, in the Virginia Army until General Longstreet was sent to Chickamauga. He here received wounds from which he died, and was buried in Knoxville, TN.

Inscription on C. S. A. Marker reads - A. G. Holcombe Co E ALA CAV CSA. No other marker. Bluff Springs Cemetery. Located next to this marker is the tombstone.

SANFORD W. CABINESS

Sanford enlisted at age 42 for three years duty in Army of the Confederacy and served as private in 2nd Corps, Company F., 31st Alabama Infantry - was at battle of Silver Run, AL 29 March 1862. He was wounded slightly in neck at Battle of Baker's Creek between 16 May and 13 Jun 1863. He was captured during Battle of Vicksburg, MS on 4 July 1863 and signed the capitulation oath on 15 July 1863. On 5 Oct 1863 he received a commutation of Rations from Co. F., 31st, AL for 24 July to 22 Aug. Family lore relates that he was killed in battle in North Carolina in 1864.

JOEL CRAWFORD HOLCOMBE

Joel and his sons enlisted in the Confederate Army at Decatur, Morgan County, AL. It is unknown why they enlisted in Morgan County which is a long distance from their home in Talladega County. The Holcombes were not slave owners, so there was some other motivation for Joel and five of his sons to join the Confederate Army. Joel was wounded in the leg and years later had the leg amputated.

WILLIAM THOMAS HOLCOMBE

He enlisted on Aug 16, 1861 in Decatur, Morgan Co., AL in Co. A 8th Al Confederate Regt., commanded by Capt. Andrew W. Bowie. In 1862 he was transferred to Col. William Wade's command ( who was under Gen Joe Wheeler). Was in skirmishes and minor battles in MS, AL and TN. Was in the battle of Murfreesboro, TN early in 1863 being wounded in left arm by his own gun when his horse jumped and threw him out of balance. After three months, he was back in the Battle of Chicamauga, GA. Soon after the battle at Chicamauga, he was captured by Union soldiers on Lookout Mt. near Bridgeport AL, imprisoned at Indianapolis, IN , transferred in Mar. 1864 to Ft. Delaware until his relase on June 12, 1865. He was given a pass to NY, then given passage to Savannah, GA. At Savannah he was given a three day ration - 1 lb. flour and 1 1/2 lb. of bacon for 130 miles travel to his home in Talladega Co. Weakened from hunger, it took him 7 days, living the last 4 days on blackberries and huckleberries. He took a train to Newman, GA and walked 90 miles to his parents home in Talladega, Co., AL. His family had given him up for dead.

HIRAM C. HOLCOMBE, In seige of Vicksburg. Killed in Action. Ran away from at age 14 to join Confederate Army in AL. Killed in the seige of Vicksburg.

BENJAMIN KENNEDY HOLCOMBE

Benjamin enlisted as B. K. Holcombe, private at Sylacauga, Talladega Co., AL Feb. 27, 1862 in Co. A 30th AL Inf. Regt; mustered at Camp Curry Mar. 26, 1862; served continuously until honorably discharged May 1, 1865. (Holcombe- Nation Builders)
