Mother's Day

This is so sweet. I love this fic. And the idea came actually from X-Men Evolution. How often does THAT happen? After seeing Shadowed Past, I just thought this up immediately after. It would be nice to see something touching between Mystique and Kurt...after all, the original X-Men cartoon had a touching scene...even if she...ack, not gonn spoil it. Anyway, here's the fic.

Kurt smiled as he talked on the phone. His tail jittered happily about, " Ja. I will. Danke. Ja. I love you too." He hung up the phone. He had just called his adoptive mother in Germany. He wanted to wish her a happy Mother's Day. He knew today was going to be somewhat new and special to him. He had sent her a lovely plaque to show his gratitude for her.

" Kurt, hurry up! We're going to be late!" Rogue called for him. He ported downstairs and zoomed out the door.

***At School***

Kurt walked into the office. The usual Brotherhood was gathered there. They actually didn't respond to him. Each were busy with....nothing. Blob stood to one side with his ball and paddle. Lance flipped through a magazine. Toad was glancing out the window at a hive of bees. And Pietro was off by the bookshelves, zipping through the books.

Kurt walked past them. And they let him. They were quiet, and pretended he didn't exist. Considering it was beginning to pour outside, perhaps everyone felt sort of dreary. Kurt invited himself into Ms. Darkholme's office.

" Uhm, is there something I can do for you, Mr. Wagner?" She asked, nervously. She had not called for him. He quietly shut the door behind him. The rain came down hard. It was dark and grey and gloomy outside and a crash of thunder rolled through the sky. Kurt turned off his holo-watch and gave his tail a swoosh.

" No need to hide from each other, is there?" He asked, slightly smiling. She morphed back into her usual form as Mystique.

" Why are you here?" She asked calmly. He merely smiled at her, ‘ It's Mother's Day, Mystique."

" So, it is."

He approached her desk, set down a booklet and pushed it gently to her hands.

" What's this?"

" Something I put together."

Mystique picked up the booklet and leafed through it. It was a picture book---a photo album. Every page filled with a picture of Kurt growin up. There was his first picture, baby pictures of all sorts, first birthday, first step, everything. And several recent pictures as well, including a few of him with his holo-watch on...which included his recent school photo.

" You put this together for me?"

" Ja. I took my best pictures and made copies. I put them in here."

" Why?" She asked slowly, not quite comprehending.

" Well, you're my mother. Such as you are. Enemies or not, don't you think you deserve something from me? Haven't you ever wondered what happened to me growing up?"

" Yes, but...I thought...you...hated me."

Kurt shrugged, " Ack, nein! Hate is such a powerful and bitter word. I dislike you a lot of the time. But, you're my mother. Whether I like you or not, biologically, I suppose I'm forced to love you...just because. As you are to me."

Mystique gave a smile. Another roll of thunder. " Thank you, Kurt."

He nodded, " Bitte, Mom. Bitte." He turned his holo-watch back on and headed for the door. Though a dark and gloomy day, he found it quite pleasant. The steady sound of rain drumming against solid surfaces, the fresh, clean smell of all the old being washed away and a new rejuvination occuring. Perhaps somewhat gothic or poetic..he loved bitter rainstorms like this. It, for some reason, brought out the artist in him.

Mystique watched him a moment, but then ran to him and hugged him tight. She ran her fingures through his hair and nuzzled her cheek on his fur. He returned the hug with a warm smile. " I'd better get going. I'm late for class as it is."

She nodded and returned to her "normal person" form, as he had done {though she could do it naturally} and walked ahead of him, opening the door for him.
