AARON ROPER SENIOR PACK. 79 EQUITY CLERK OF COURTS OFFICE, PICKENS, S.C.
Tyre L. Roper, Marcus Roper, Aaron Roper & Marena Roper who married Simeon E. Burgess states that Aaron Roper Sr. died in 1855. Owned 300 acres lying on Saluda River adjoining lands of Samuel Earl & others. His wife died about the same time he did and was buried about the same time. Left 10 children viz. Lemuel Roper, John Roper, Matilda Roper, wife of Joab Lankford, the heirs of Jane Hagood who died some years before her parents viz. Benjamin Hagood the names and numbers of the others unknown if any, the heirs of Tilmon Roper who died before his parents leaving the following children viz. Catherine Roper, a minor over the age of 12 years, John , James, David & Tilmon Roper each minors under 14 years ... The heirs of Charles Roper decd. who died in 1855, and the above Tyre L. Roper, Marcus Roper, Marena Burgess. Hamilton Roper decd. Clarinda Roper was the widow of Hamilton Roper. Lemuel Roper died leaving a widow Jane Roper and 4 children, William Noble Roper, Bailey Roper under 14 years, Martha Roper and Elmina Roper under 12 years all of whom reside in Georgia. Filed March 27, 1856. . Hamilton Roper died leaving no children. Clarinda Roper admits it to be true that she did live separate and apart from her husband Hamilton Roper 18 months prior to his death, but she positively denies that it had its origin in no fault of her and that its continence was against her will and beyond her power to remedy. And she claims that there was nothing whatever in the said separation which at all conflicts with her right to a share in her decd husbands real estate. She was married to him in Greenville District in January 1853 and lived with him until June 1854, during which time she had a male child by him which died when but a few weeks old. Her said husband was unfortunately addicted to intemperate habits, and from the results of this he became cruel and unkind towards her, and frequently inflicted blows upon her person. He at length drove her from his house threatening her with severe personal violence if she did not leave and ordering her never to return under these circumstances. She went to the house of her father Benjamin Turner in Greenville District where she has ever since resided. After thus driving her from his house he never solicited or expressed his willingness for her to return and never contributed towards her support and maintenance. She avers that this unkind treatment was entirely undeserved by her, that she had ever been kind affectionate and faithful towards her said husband and would gladly have resided with him as his wife had she been permitted to do so. That she is deeply pained and mortified in thus being compelled to disclose these unhappy transactions which she had hoped were buried forever in the grave of her unfortunate husband, but the covert and injurious attack which has been made upon her rights and her reputation have imposed upon her the necessity of making her defence by a true statement of the facts. She carried to her husband at their marriage, artices of furniture of considerable value only a portion of which has been returned to her.
