In between these points lies the town of Tate where Barton and Isabella Johnson Loveless lived. In the valleys and around the bends of these mountains, in such towns as Jasper and Talking Rock, lived our Lovelesses and the allied families from whom we descend. Many continue to live there today.
The earliest records on Barton are from ledgers of the Frances C. Andoe trading post which was located on the Chestatee River in the Hall/Dawson Co. area of Georgia.
Barton and Isabella's two oldest children are then listed on the Poor School Children List of Hall Co., Georgia in 1829.Barton was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Hall Co., Georgia census.
He is listed as head of a family on the 1834 Lumpkin Co., Georgia census.
He bought land in Lumpkin Co. (now Dawson Co.) in March, 1835.
View a copy of the Land Lot Map of Dawson Co. and see where the property is located.
He bought property in Cherokee Co., Georgia on February 5, 1839. This was in the area that later became Pickens County. View a copy of the 1903 Henley Map to see the lots that Barton and his brother-in-law, Thomas M. Johnson, owned.
He sells the Lumpkin (Dawson) Co. property to John M. Keith in December, 1839.
Barton was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Cherokee Co., Georgia census.
He is listed as a Justice of the Peace on two land transactions in Cherokee Co., Georgia in 1844.
After Barton's death in 1848, his son, Abner P., settled his Estate in March, 1849 in Cherokee Co., Georgia.
After Barton's death, Isabella remained in Pickens Co. She is listed on the 1850 Cherokee Co., Georgia census, and then again on the 1860 Pickens Co., Georgia census.
Sometime after 1860, Isabella moved, following some of her children into the Blount Co., Alabama area. We understand that she is buried in the town of Warrior in Blount County, however, we have not been able to locate her grave.
If you are out there and are one of BARTON'S BRATS, we'd love to hear from you! Please feel free to email either Lisa or Lou Ann, or sign our guestbook below.
