She was the one princess no one wanted. Her name was Lila, the daughter of the Duke of Arlington; her mother, the daughter of the king. My ancestor was her lady in waiting, her servant, a friend. Her name was Ashton of Lox, and the story I am about to tell you has been buried so far back in the history books that only legends remain.

Note from the author: I don't normally like medieval "romances." As a history major, I just can't find anything romantic about enslaving a group of people to live on your land, constant, fruitless wars, ect. Most medieval romances seem to have a strong willed female who stands up to a man. That would not have been common. Joan of Arc--not during the Middle Ages. Maybe one day, as my favorite time periods have changed before, I'll find something more inviting about the time period.

However, I note this as my personal preference.

I started writing the Black Knight because that sometimes legends have a basis in reality~but many times only a small part of truth survives. The symbolism and images of dragons and magic might have been pulled from the language of the time. I write for this website as an excersize to improve my writing, so the story in this room is an experiment. What if it was true ... in some ways ....

This story has become more than I ever envisioned. Enjoy the story of this treacherous time and find hope in the midst ... as the charactors of this story seek to find.
