We have chosen the VP

We have chosen our VP. If you read the newsletter carefully last week, you saw that the VP is still pending. Well, we have chosen it. We have chosen the former leader of the Mighty EBounders, Rasberrian. He was a good leader, and found that he has more time than he used to. So, he is back with us and VP of the EarthBound Gang!

EarthBound Gang on Yahoo?

The EarthBound Gang is now a sponsored club on Yahoo. They have a thing for large clubs going, and we have decided to take advantage of it. We have our own Yahoo chat room, special access to the Yahoo Pager, a Yahoo message board and other stuff.

Last time I looked, there were 3 EarthBound clubs on there. Well, The EarthBound Gang has over 1000 members there. We should try to beat the biggest EarthBound club over on Yahoo. They only have 44 members.

The disadvantage to being on Yahoo is this. I have to specially invite each and every one of you that want to join the Yahoo section. I wasn't going to mass mail all of you because I thought that I send you enough mail already. But, I think that shouldn't be that much of a problem. If you would like to join, click the link below.

The Webpage is Up!!
The basics of the webpage is up. There is not much on any of it, but we are adding things every day. Now you can watch our progress and see what we are doing. Here are some things that you can do to help.

1. We are allowing fan fiction to be put up on the webpage. Send us your fan fiction.

2. Send me any EarthBound MIDIs, WAVs, and MP3s you have.

3. EarthBound pictures are appreciated. Send us what you can.

4. If you know CGI-Bin, e-mail me.

5. Send us your links to your personal webpages and banners. Anything you want!!

The Slingo Tournament
Hello again. This is becoming a big pain. Actually all is well, but when I took the five-day break, it threw things off balance. But we will be commencing the Slingo tournament as soon as this newsletter goes out. Expect an e-mail or IM from me asking you the time that you want to schedule your game. Each game takes about 10 minutes at most. But keep in mind that we have to be in the same game together, and that could take a while so make sure you plan about 30 minutes.

Our Meetings have been the best that the EarthBound clubs have seen in a long long time if not ever. PLEASE try to come early, because they fill up very quickly. IF YOU CANNOT GET IN, Keep trying. Some people only stay for 10-15 minutes, and other's just come in and leave. I usually give out about 15 promotions a meeting and about 10 tokens. We have Scramber, Trivia, Jepoardy, Pokemon Battlers, EarthBound Battlers, and More! We also chat about club stuff, and other garbage that affects our lives. PLUS. If you are in the room the first time we fill the room that evening, you get an AUTOMATIC TOKEN OR PROMOTION. So come on down and have a good time!

Who else should recieve the honor this week? He is the first Apple of Enligtenment for crying out loud. He is doing a fine fine job, and even though he is at the highest non-officer rank of the EarthBound Gang, he is still working hard to make our club better. He of course participates at the meetings as well as the newsletters. He proofreads the newsletters for me now. He is making a dungon and dragon type game in the form of EarthBound. What else could you want?

Oh Shoot, Ranks have been torture. At least they have had the most work done on them probably since the creation of the club. Over 200 promotions were given out this week, I accepted the first application for the Apple of Enlightment rank, and I had to combine mathematically each and every rank from the Mighty EBounder's club into EarthBound Gang Format.

For all Mighty EBounder members, Your current rank has been transfered into the coordinating EarthBound Gang rank. IF you believe that I have given you the wrong rank... well, use the equation up top above, and plug in the numbers with the information given... and it will all work out. (Or if I am not busy... you can just ask me, and I will redo the arithmetic for you.)

OaFrankFly has been a great member to the EarthBound Gang. If I am not mistaken, he has been in this club longer than my 1 1/2 years (note from Frank: only 17 months). He has helped with many projects such as Jepoardy and beating us all in trivia. He has gotten us many members in OnettNess's time, and has been Member of the Week six times! His work shall always be remembered as he is the first Apple of Enlightment.

TOKENS


Tokens as of last Wedesday have been reset. But that means that I feel sorry for all of you and I will give you more ways and opportunities to make it so that you can get your tokens back.

The Token Prize List is going to change, and for the better. We will no longer be giving food, and we will change the list about every month to keep up with the new trends and stuff. If the EarthBound Gang does start to get money. "Trying to think of a way for that to happen". Then I will expand this puppy into a hell of a lot more than it is at already.

Last Week's Non-EarthBound Poll
Last week I asked you what you thought of the Cuban Missle Crisis. To say the least going by the grading scale, most people didn't know what the hell it was. Almost everyone else thought that we should give up on the Cuba Missle Crisis. I want to tell you of a story:

Me and my family have a large boat, and living in Michigan it is natural to go out on the lakes and have a good time. We went on Lake Erie to a place called Crystal Bay. Crystal Bay is a party spot for adults. But me and my friend went there in my familys large boat. (I have a large boat operator licence.) Right when you hit the Canadian border Cuban influence takes effect. Boats sell Cuban cigars and Cuban sugar cane as well as drugs from Cuba. Just something to think about.

This is quite an interesting question. For you see, China is also a communist (different form then the Stalinist/Castro brand tho'), and we do not embargo it. Most likely because China produces many economic products we use and it'd seriously harm our economy to do so. And also, Cuba is on our front door step. When the Cuban Missile Crisis occured, a nuke from Cuba could hit every major city in the US. This, of course, is still true today, even though the nukes in Cuba (that we know of) are gone. But, is embargoing the right answer? To my knowledge, we are the only nation that does so. Not that us embargoing the nation won't hurt it, but still. Kennedy signed a paper guaranteeing that we would never invade Cuba, which is stupid, since we could do it easily because of our naval base at Guantanamo Bay. We wouldn't even have to fight on the beaches...just sail a huge force into our base there, unload the troops, and kick ass. But since we can not do this, it seems embargoing is the best way to hurt Castro.

I say that we should lift the embargo on Cuba soon. Fidel Castro hasn't
done anything... aggressive, in a long time. Except suing us. =P Really,
the Cuban people are suffering from poverty, Cuban pieces of history are
being ruined because of no funds are available to repair them, and Castro's
old anyway. He'll die soon. The Pope's visit really loosened things up on
that island. Plus it makes the US look bad (again), kinda like an Iraq in
North America. What I suggest is that we lift them on Castro's 75th
birthday, or eventually, within a decade from now. I say this because,
while Cuba has been quite for a while, Castro's government have done plenty
of other bad things, like that old Missile Crisis, and human rights abuses.
So they need to get embargoed for a little while longer. Hopefully, when
Castro succumbs to his old age, a "democratic" government (read: "Friendly
to the West") will get set up. And all messy feelings from the past will
dissolve. This, I think, is the best option now.

A BRAND NEW ARTICLE FROM EBG NESS
WHAT THE @$#%??

This article is going to be funny. I don't do many funny things.. But here is what I think of.. and some stupid things that I thought could happen.

(((((THIS IS A TRUE STORY)))) ((((I HAVE PROOF))))

I live in Farmington Hills, Michigan. It's 25 miles from Detroit, and it is far from the Ghettos of Detroit. We went there to go to Joe Louis Arena to watch an ice skating show. Anyway... they let me take the people mover (AKA, a monorail) to the car while they walked the mile of Detroit. Just let me tell you something... You can get all the entertainment you want in Detroit for only $.50 Ride any of the people mover cars, It's marvelous.

I get on the subway car, and some gothic and some 91-year-old lady are telling me to sit two different places, when the gothic says "The lord will kill you if you don't sit down here." So, I sit down there, and the 91 year old lady goes around condeming everyone to a horrible death.
So, trying to avoid this condemning, I go to the car in front of us, where I see just a mass of people. I get closer, and see that it is a group participation show where everyone is trying to get this guy's leg away from the doorway.

Sooooo, I go back in my car and I hear a bunch of ruckus and armss flailing and so forth, and what I think is a Karate demonstratation is two old ladies taking a seat from a huge African-American man. (NO I am not prejudiced at all.) So, I sit down and another Black man comes on and they start talking. The guy next too me says "Oh This is great, these are the stars of the show." (SERIOUSLY)

After they talk together for a while one looks and me and says "Youa Youa Youa I a wanna ask you wanna ask you a ask you a question."

Before I can respond he says, "Were you the one with the AK-47 with the motorcycle in the hoopty wagon in the hosin dragon?"

I reply "No."

So the guy turns around and start's mummbling about the stars or something. Then the police come on saying that some guy with an AK-47 was going down the street with a motorcycle.

So I get off at the next station and walk the 1/2 mile left.

Wierd eh??

Frank's Movie Review
Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

Who here besides me recalls the seemingly endless Star Destroyer passing over the camera as John Williams' masterful orchestral score played in the background when they first saw Star Wars? I certainly do.
Imagine that feeling again, only 22 years later. That describes Star Wars: The Phantom Menace quite well. Right from the start, when the courier vessel sent by the Republic to transport Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to attempt to negotiate a treaty between the planet of Naboo and the greedy Trade Federation, this movie displays exceptional special effects and another masterful presentation by John Williams.
Right from the start, there is trouble, however. An attendant droid notices that the two representatives from the Republic are Jedi and notifies her master in charge of the Trade Federation blockade at Naboo, and their cover is blown. The excitement starts out almost immediately, as a full squad of battle droids stands ready to eliminate the Jedi, and suddenly through the smoke distinctly seen are two lightsaber blades, and the droids open fire.
With a speed only posible by the concerted effort of two Jedi Knights and Industrial Light & Magic's crack team of computer graphic effects mavens, the bolts are quickly deflected and sent right back at the droids to eliminate them. The Naboo are in trouble, and it is up to Kenobi and Jinn to warn the planetary ruler to leave Naboo and appeal to the Republic.
One of the things I have never understood about the reviews of this movie is why most reviewers criticize this movie for having no plot. In fact, the story line sets things up perfectly for the next movie. How Anakin came to be Obi-Wan's apprentice, even the start of the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire are all explained in this movie, and what R2-D2 was talking about in Star Wars: A New Hope when he thought Obi-Wan was his former master is explained too. If it weren't for Artoo's bravery, Obi-Wan wouldn't have even been there for A New Hope.
The special effects in this movie are nothing short of stunning, and Lucas made sure of that by allowing his craft to only be shown in the 2,500 biggest and best theaters in the United States, and required that it be shown on the largest screen in a multiplex. High-tech and low-tech alike, too; characters such as Jar Jar Binks and the junk dealer Watto are 100% digitally created, whereas a ladies' electric shaver serves as Qui-Gon Jinn's comlink. Your typical summer movie has 2,000 shots with 250 of them being special-effects shots. TPM was about 2,200 shots, with 1,950 or so of them being special-effects shots. Even "ordinary" shots were ones that Lucas found a use for special effects in. If one actor was doing great in one take, but the other one was lousy, and in the next take, the role was reversed, just patch them together with computers.
But probably the absolute best scene was Anakin's come-from-behind victory in the podrace on Tatooine. Qui-Gon recognized that Anakin would be one to bring balance to the Force--and bet his only chance off Tatooine in the podrace against parts to fix his ship and Anakin's freedom. If Anakin wins, of course, they get off Tatooine, but if he doesn't, the ship goes into Watto's posession. Anakin himself had been working on his podracer--he claimed it was the fastest in the galaxy. His main contender is an expert podracer named Sebulba. He's never lost a race--mainly because he cheats. And cheat he does. Even right from the start, he switches off a fire containment valve on Anakin's podracer and casually walks on by into his on podracer. As Anakin starts though, he has engine trouble--the starter units were malfunctioning. After a minute and a half of frustratingly trying to get his engines to start--in which upwards of 25 kilometers had already been covered by the leaders--he finally gets two good starts and takes off like a rocket, moving up into the top five by the second lap of the 165-kilometer race. Of course, Sebulba is up to his old tricks again and tosses a hydrospanner into his close rival's engine, forcing his engines to explode, Anakin into third place--and in dodging the explosion, Anakin is forced onto the repair track, one of his engines lost power from sparks in the explosion. As he rises up to circle higher up to get to the pit area, his engine re-starts and he swoops down, almost on top of Sebulba, but at the last second he pulls ahead and into first place, where he stays for a time, but on the third lap, he finally loses his fire control and a gout of flame jets out of his left engine. Quickly, Anakin reroutes power... but only has 33% power in both engines. A few adjustments and a harrowing 30 seconds later (in which Sebulba gets about 10 km ahead with 25 km to go), Anakin has two 100% starts and quickly makes up lost ground. In the remaining 10k before the finish line, it's a shoving match as Sebulba, with a mass three times greater than Anakin's podracer, tries to shove him into submission, but instead Sebulba's engine tether gets caught on Anakin's. Eventually a part on Anakin's podracer cuts the tether up, sending Sebulba into the ground in a spectacular explosion and Anakin on to win the race.
It's this kind of excitement that keeps the movie-goers on edge, and on the night I saw it, even though it was over a week since the opening, people still cheered for Anakin when he won--Lucas has indeed announced his return in a big way... and Industrial Light & Magic again proves where it gets its name.
