1. Reasons, which influenced me to formulate my homepage
I am a physician. Any student of medicine is obliged to grasp interdisciplinary set of subjects like biochemistry, physics, biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, psychology, cognitive sciences, behavioral sciences, elements of computer
sciences. When somebody take seriously the study of these outlying subjects, apart of knowledge of pathology and other elements of theory of diseases, he can formulate
general, even universal hypotheses.
permanent education in the realm of these interdisciplinary disciplines and my medical practice, as clinician, I formulated many generalizing interdisciplinary theories and theoretical models. I try to promote my result of research and
thinking throughout different means i.e. peer reviewed scientific publications ( see below ), but also through Internet independent websites, generalizing websites, Wiki Systems and lectures. So, it is obvious that I need to present myself
to be able to argue that I am competent in formulation of my theories. This homepage try to demonstrate my former experiences and some information about present endeavors. I hope that it will increase the confidence of readers of my
texts to the consistency of my arguments.

I am the author of approximately 300 scientific, peer reviewed papers (see above) and about 80 articles popularizing science and supporting patients in their search for solution of medical and personal problems. My popular published texts are usually related to the concept of 'behavioral and holistic medicine'. A major part of my scientific papers is listed by PUBMED (Medline) and can be checked immediately under: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi The impact of my popular texts and websites can be estimated, for instance by Google search engine, which .. to - day .. for the phrase "Andrzej Brodziak „ lists many items. I will begin the presentation of my scientific achievements by indication to my main motives and intentions, which guided me during many years of endeavors. I have concluded yet after some first years of my scientific activity, that development of personal, scientific endeavors should not be characterized by the repetition of very similar experiments and that this development should consider the changing "sight of world". Being always the practicing doctor, I concluded also that clinicians, in their scientific activity, on the one hand, are not able surpass molecular biologists and professional biochemists, and from the other hand, as they are obliged to spend most of their time on medical care, they should concentrate on advancement of methods of contacts and understanding of suffering people. In my opinion just clinicians are committed to settle the reasonable contents of statements to people, who are depressed, under stress, in elderly or even dying. The clinician, in distinction from workers of departments of anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and different theoretical institutions should consider the man holistically. They should perceive he not only anatomical patient’s features, but also his” electromagnetic, psychical and even spiritual components". The above mentioned preliminary remarks will facilitate explanation of the development of my scientific activity. Presenting my achievements, I am giving in square brackets [ .. ] numbers of my own published papers, listed above, which justify and substantiate the particular ascertainments of the discussion of my scientific work. b. Description of my scientific activity in the first period after graduating from medical studies I completed the medical education of a physician, but in the realm of scientific activities, by reason of my personality predispositions I began initially to consider the possibilities of applications of mathematics in medicine [1, 2]. This was even the subject of my three years post graduate studies (1966 - 1970). I tried then also to improve structure and forms of medical records, especially for documentation of physical examination [ 9,32]. After-effects of our proposals can be found in many Polish hospitals. Becoming more and more familiar with practical medical practices I have started to consider the nature of medical diagnostics reasoning [11, 20]. I decided to try to apply to the procedures of differential diagnostics some mathematical methods. My first published paper was entitled: "The use of elements of set theory to differential diagnostics [1]. The proposed methods concerned also „abstract multidimensional spaces". It facilitate settlements of synthetic conclusions based on both measurable and only descriptive features of man's organism and his psyche. It lead to my first algorithms supporting settlement of diagnostic decisions. About the year 1967, in our country, first computers became accessible to me. They were called then as 'electronic digital machines'. So, I performed some experiments on such engine [ UMC -1 ( Elektroniczna Maszyna Cyfrowa Nr. 1 ) ] installed at Silesian Technical University in Gliwice [2, 6] .Other experiments on so called hybrid analog - digital machines concerned tests of automatic interpretation of ECG signal [10]. Part of these works was based on 'pattern recognition theory’ and ‘algorithms of pattern classification' , which are at present implemented to Holter ambulatory, 24-hours monitoring equipment [ 13, 16 ]. After several years of experiments, I presented in 1970 the trial of algorithmic reproduction of the natural medical inference [7, 11]. The elaborated algorithm and computer program written in so called ALGOL language, together with presentation of computer simulating experiments, were object of the Ph.D. thesis. Of course, nowadays few people remember yet the ALGOL autocode. At present, there are many articles related to so called „ clinical algorithms". I have postulated about its usefulness already in year 1968 [4]. In despite of their frequent presentations in medical literature, it turns out, that algorithmic reproduction of natural medical inference is very difficult. c. My scientific activities performed after Ph.D. degree When I have realized that algorithmic reconstruction of medical diagnostic inference usually it is only a simplified scheme, I decided to try to get to know what is known about the brain’s natural processes of searching for solutions. Simply speaking, I wanted to understand how human brain works. So, I studied for the next three years neurophysiology (neural sciences) and cognitive sciences. After three years of reviewing of hundreds of papers and my integrating thinking I have published „ my theoretical model of the structure and action of the human brain ". It was the book sub title: [Psychonics - theory of structures and information processing of human brain and its application to computer sciences] [ 22]. First part of this book presents a synthesis of the current knowledge. In the second part of my book I presented an indispensable extrapolation, which was necessary in order to understand the 'processing and cognitive activity ' of the brain. This book, about 500 pages, was published in 1974, unfortunately in Polish language only. It is available through http://katalog.nukat.edu.pl/lib/item?id=chamo:3222665&fromLocationLink=false&theme=nukat . It is possible to be acquainted with summary of it contents under https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/mozg.htm . The most important essence is accessible now also in English throughout my peer reviewed papers [ 157, 219, 293] As I mentioned above, in the period 1.09.1975 - 1.06.1976, I realized the scientific stage in the University Department of Psychiatry ( Clinique des Maladies Mentales et de l'Encephale - l'Hopital Saint Anne, Paris ). Apart of possibility to be familiarized with the practice of general psychiatry, I had then the opportunity to work in a laboratory of psychometrics, formed then by Professor Pierre Pichot, who was an outstanding expert in this domain. Just about the year 1975 first computers, equipped with a monitor and keyboard enabled to formulate the software organizing the dialogue with patients, according to doctor's earlier guidelines. So, I elaborated then this kind of software. The program was written by me in FORTRAN language, which now probably pass out of use completely. One of the results of this scientific internship was the publication of the paper: Dreyfus JF, Brodziak A, Pichot P. New statistical and Computer techniques to measure psychopathological changes. Neuro-Psychopharmacology. Proceedings of the Tenth Congress of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum Québec, July 4-9, 1976. 1978; 1: 103-104, 104a, 105-108 https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-1-4832-8322-7.50025-X The utility of this software was described also in the article presented on one of first conferences devoted to so called ‘medical informatics’ [ Brodziak, A. (1978). Software of Dialogues: Physician - Computer - Patient. In: Anderson, J. (eds) Medical Informatics Europe 78. Lecture Notes in Medical Informatics, vol 1. Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg. ] [28]. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-93095-9_23 https://www.angelfire.com/ga3/gean/MIE-78.jpg The considered field of medical interview concerned general psychiatry and clinical psychology important for general medicine. This software was estimated then as very useful, so it inclined me to present these achievements as the thesis of my Sc. D. degree [23, 24, 28]. The most essential result of my work in Psychiatry Clinic in Paris was however the better understanding of psyche, what was important later in time of the elaboration of the ' holistic clinical approach '. After return from the scientific stage in France, I organized for the Department of Gastroenterology, located in the Central Hospital of Silesian Medical Academy, in Katowice - Ligota, the prototype of so called 'computerized hospital information system ' [14, 15, 21, 25] . The software gathering the standardized medical interview, elaborated by me in France was also used in the realm of this system. It was also an important tool for the Ambulatory of Behavioral and Psychosomatic Diseases, which I organized then in the mentioned Central Hospital of SMA. I defended my Sc. D. degree ( doktor habilitowany ) thesis on the basis of these achievements in February 1978. This scientific degree allowed me to obtain the post of Associate Professor (then the degree was indicated by the term ‘Docent’). I returned to the problem of applications of computers in clinical medicine by reason of new possibilities arising from the idea of so called 'computer expert systems' based on 'artificial intelligence technology'. I built so called expert systems related to 1. treatment of hypertension and 2. electrolyte disturbances [26, 29, 30, 43, 67]. This software was constructed, taking into account not only neurophysiological theories but also known data about the action of human genome [42, 49, 55] . In the 80s, so called personal computers have become widely available. We experimented with their new types of software, also with so called ‘object-oriented programming languages ‘, especially in so called LOGO language [43, 67, 69]. These programs were very useful as supporting tools in our educational (teaching) activities [44, 57]. See, for instance, the content of the website: https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/equimerecunit.htm My involvement in application of computer sciences in medicine caused also my interest in new technology of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy and imaging of organ damages by MA scanners [41, 58]. I organized in 1985 the first country conference related to nuclear magnetic resonance physics and technology of MR scanners. I had initiated the competition for new 'image reconstructions algorithms'. The proceedings of this conference and competition, printed in 1985 are available in main libraries. One of my assistants performed then the pioneering experimental investigations of cerebro-spinal liquid by NMR spectroscope. She defended then her Ph.D. thesis related to this subject. My interest in this imaging techniques is proved also in the later period by publishing papers on non-standard applications of MA scanners [181,197]. During this period, at the request of professors Z. Traczyk and A. Trzebski, editors of the book "Human physiology", I elaborated an introductory chapter entitled "Basic mechanisms of physiological controls” [68]. The content of this chapter was in fact the continuation of my analysis of structure and function of the central nervous system. It characterizes my efforts to integrate cybernetics and control theory with knowledge about function of the brain on several levels (neuro-psychology). The content of this chapter of the textbook is bind also to one of my earliest papers entitled: "The homeostasis of glucose and free fatty acids"[5]. The scheme presented in this paper show the nature of mechanisms of physiological control. This diagram highlights the fact that the natural mechanisms regulating physiological processes consist of hundreds of feedback loops. Such complex dynamical systems require new ways of describing them. In the year 1989, I read the book edited by A. Wauquier et al. sub title: "Slow wave sleep - physiological, pathophysiological and functional aspects" (Raven Press, New York, 1989). I found there data, that cytokines like Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and Interleukine -1 (IL1) are entangled with the process of falling asleep. Randomly, we have begun in our Department, yet earlier the measurements of TNF, IL1 and other cytokines. It was very inspiring to us [154, 174]. Probably the discussion of these data in our team prompted the realization of many experiments related to circadian rhythms of these cytokines, what we published in frequently quoted, international journals [e.g. Zubelewicz B, Muc-Wierzgoń M, Harbuz MS, Brodziak A. Central single and chronic administration of morphine stimulates corticosterone and interleukin (IL)-6 in adjuvant-induced arthritis. J Physiol Pharmacol. 2000;51(4 Pt 2):897-906]. My coworkers, younger colleagues: prof. dr hab. Barbara Zubelewicz-Szkodzinska and prof. dr hab. Malgorzata Muc - Wierzgon, by reason of these papers become my Associate Professors in our Department [see their and my papers through PUBMED accessible under http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi ]. The content of the mentioned book has inclined me, personally to consideration and investigation or different, other geophysical factors then coming darkness of the night. I have assumed that different geophysical parameters can influence also production and secretion of cytokines, hormones and different regulating factors of the human organism. By this reason, I undertook the cooperation with the Institute of Physics of Jagiellonian University in Krakow and its unit of radio-astronomy. One of results of this cooperation was elaboration and publication of the book entitled “Solar storm is coming” [126, 127-133] (see information below, as well as the interview related to this book accessible under: https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/minimum.htm ). As the result of these considerations, I undertook also with my assistant dr Damian Kaszuba so called "Death Certificate project” [ see https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/death.htm ] The analysis of 750 000 of " death certificates " enable us to draw the conclusion, that the season of birth determine, in ' statistical sense ' the rates of morbidity for some diseases. I had published in 1990 the paper, in English, sub title "The unit of neural networks modeling the recall of mental images by oscillations of feedback loops - caused by change of the set - culminating points signal" [70]. I presented it also later on a conference of competent computer scientists [93]. This is probably one of my most important achievement. ! It is possible to get to know the essence of this model of the ' basic unit of neural circuits ' through the website: http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/equimerecunit.htm [ please use also the animated didactic simulation, accessible on this website ]. It is not only the paper, but also the theoretical and algorithmic! model (pattern) enabling to construct "a chip" with could reproduce the essential feature of the function of neural circuits the brain realizing imagery. It is obvious that the human brain is constantly retrieving (calling) data from memory. In neurophysiological terms... to recall something from the memory signify .. to imagine something! My ' equ-me-rec unit ' (from equilibrating-memorizing - recalling - unit) demonstrate how an imagination can be realized in neuronal circuits, so it determine the basic ' building block ' of the human neural circuits. The ability to imagine different objects is essential to understand the ability to 'imagine oneself'. The imagination of oneself is the basis of the phenomenon of consciousness. By this reason, my 'equ-me-rec unit' is important also for any people, who would like to consider (understand) the essence of ' consciousness ' [59, 60, 116]. I promote the idea of 'Theoretical Model of Neuronal Circuits Realizing Perceptions, Memorization of Images and Their Recall from Memory in the Form of Imagery' also in many later papers [157, 219, 293, 312] The proposed model of essential, functional unit of the brain is useful, at present, in time, when many researchers try to formulate theories explaining the phenomenon of consciousness by quantum physics (by alleged decoherence, occurring in microtubules of neurons ) [123, 138]. Theory of equi-me-rec could be generalized in a way superimposing phenomena of quantum physics to elementary neuronal circuits. I am discussing it in one of my recent papers [312] and in website [ http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/jazn-spoleczna.htm - unfortunately in Polish language only ] I had published with my colleagues also some papers related to genetic engineering [48], the methods of investigations of DNA sequence [75], function and organization of the genome and meaning of molecular genetics for practical medicine [74] . In our paper sub title: "The molecular mechanisms of information transfer to descendant individuals", we have introduced the notion of "genomatics" and we have postulated the need of such scientific investigations, already 10 years earlier before international rise of this field. I elaborated also the website useful in educational courses of genetics for medical students. It is accessible under http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/genetics.htm Those persons, who try to consider the nature of consciousness and genetics probably inevitably will be also interested in essential questions of philosophy of nature. I have published until 1989 about 80 peer reviewed papers. So, this fact, with other personal achievements in the realm of educational process, support for carriers of my young colleagues and results in the field of organization of clinical units justified the completion of the procedure to endow the title of a professor. In Poland this title, finally is endowed by the President of Polish Republic. I obtained this honor on 30 March 1989. d. Activity after receiving the title of professor After the period of my interests in problems of computer application in medicine and neuroscience in the eighties I became more and more occupied with cognitive sciences, psychological theories, and method of psychotherapy. As the result of these considerations, already in the eighties, I published several papers, which combined clinical psychology with neural sciences, it means which allow to see the rationale for transition between these two levels of brain function [50, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66]. Examples of titles of these papers are: "Trace of series of negative events and transformations leading to chronic diseases"; "Trial of estimation of the basic believes leading to behavioral diseases”; „Evolutionary theoretical model of the disease" [ 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 51, 54, 56]. I perceive it now, years later, that I have begun then to build theoretical bases of many original methods of indirect psychotherapy and so-called holistic approach to general medicine. Being head of a well-organized university department and having any day the opportunity to observe and settle the treatment of 72 patients, I have decided to formulate and implement the original set of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, which could constitute rational and scientifically based holistic approach to the daily practice of general practitioners. I assumed then that the “holistic approach” should be based on simultaneous applications of the pharmacological and eventually surgical treatment with recognition of patient’s actual state of psyche, experienced stress, past harmful events and defending mechanisms and his perspectives. Usually, the consideration of a patient's family and social situation is necessary. The masked depression should be detected, and his feeling of coherence should be estimated. I have published, during the years 1985 – 2000, many papers about possible tools and its verifications [76, 81, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 113, 115, 119, 120]. I promoted, among diagnostic tools, the objective methods derived from the method of 'repertory grids', based on George Kelly's personal construct theory. I proposed my simplified forms of repertory grids [ see http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/standard.htm ] and appropriate method of synthesis of data received by means of a set of such 'repertory grids'. Many proposed tools are my original inventions [85, 91, 98, 99, 100, 102]. Among them is so called 'syncretic, medical scheme of the psyche ' and also so called scheme of 'personal world’ presented shortly above as symbols of my topics of endeavors. . Many my web pages present concise lectures about particular methods of psychotherapy designed for general practitioner. Examples could be found going through my pages https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/psychologia.htm The aim of considerations of these new 'diagnostic tools’ taking into account the patient’s 'psychological condition ' was necessary to be able to form a standardized, reproducible set of methods, accessible to many doctors. My intention to implement into practice of general practitioners the 'holistic approach ' required to indicate or elaborate many ‘indirect forms' of psychological influences - in other words 'indirect forms' of psychotherapy [71, 73, 82, 92, 105, 118, 134] . I have promoted the term of ' indirect, supportive psychotherapy ' for many years [100, 283, 284]. Therefore, I wrote (in Polish language) many popular articles, published in widely accessible journals promoting health as well as some popular books [71, 73, 82, 105, 118, 134]. The intention of conventional or ' indirect psychotherapy‘ is of course the trial to change unhealthy behavior or attitudes and believes causing stress, distorted mood or depression. The 'holistic approach' in therapeutic phase should encompass, in my opinion also ‘non talking therapies', which could intensify the personal influence of a doctor. Examples are meditation and mindfulness therapy, light-therapy, rehabilitation techniques and so on (see also our English language web page accessible under https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/adventure.htm ) A paradoxical manifestation of the events from this period of my life is the fact that the work that results from participation in a conference organized by prof. Steptoe at Kings College in London, namely the article entitled: {Breast self-examination: attitudes and practices among young women in Europe} [97] is one of my most cited works, consistently, still, to date. This article deals with the prevention of breast cancer through simple physical and somatic measures. In the nineties we have considered and tried to verify also some possible curing geophysical influences. The mentioned cooperation with Department of Physics of Jagiellonian University in Kraków and its Unit of Radio-astronomy allowed me to be acquainted with the phenomenon of W.O. Schumann Resonance knowledge and so called Pc1 and Pc3 micropulsations. I had published (unfortunately in Polish language only) the book related to the subject "geophysics and health" sub title [Solar strorm is coming] [126], which is accessible also in Internet under https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/sztorm.htm (see also https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/minimum.htm ) One of our investigations has concerned the possibility to improve conditions of some patients by means of equipment reproducing the Ultra-Low Frequency electromagnetic waves, in the range of Schumann resonance. One of my assistants, dr n. med. M. Sieczkowska, defended the Ph. D. thesis subtitle: "Attempt to treat epilepsy with the applications of weak, ultra-low frequency electromagnetic field". The summary of this paper, and photos of the equipment are available in our website. It seems to me, that these investigations are examples of many possible experiments on methods of stimulation of neuro-immuno-endocrine system and methods of reinforcement of the natural 'healing potential of the human organism'. Another example of such possible investigations are determined in our web page entitled.: "Altered states of consciousness at critical local sidereal time as a method of improvement of wellbeing and health of older people", accessible under https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/zuzela.htm I discussed the possibilities of reinforcement of ‘the healing potential of the human organism’ in several papers [108, 117, 135]. I bring up this problem in another my English language website https://www.angelfire.com/ab2/abrodziak/coronal.html At that time, I have taken into consideration also the concept of so called feeling of coherence as a factor promoting health. According to A. Antonovsky, author of this concept, the coherence it is meaning of comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. Apart the question " how to measure the level of coherence the problem emerges if is possible to reinforce the meaningfulness. Probably so called "philosophical counseling", a supportive branch of psychotherapeutic technique is focused on this kind of task. Dr. Alexander Kealey on his web page writes "that philosophical counseling should improve ability to think more clearly and deeply about things that affect your happiness and self-development. These "things" or issues can be mundane, such as problems or questions about work, relationships, money, health, character, addictions, or they are about more subtle matters, such as values and moral dilemmas, spiritual issues, beliefs about God, the nature of the soul, purpose and meaning of life, death, sifting through competing claims of religious authority, the question of self-identity (Who am I?) and making sense of unusual experiences (spiritual, paranormal, psychedelic, etc.). It seems to me that a doctor, who would like to practice the ‘holistic approach’ should be prepared to discussions on philosophical subjects with their patients. This conviction has led me, already many years ago, to consideration of some subject related to the philosophy of nature. As the result of this endeavors I wrote the book formulating the extrapolation of Frank Tipler' s theory named "The anthropic principle " (John D. Barrow, Frank J. Tipler : The Antropic Cosmological Principle, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1986). The title of my book, published in 1990 was: "You are immortal - the conclusion of discussion of physicists, biologists and physicians on the anthropic principle ". Frank Tipler published in 1994 his second book subtitle: "The physics of immortality. Modern cosmology, God and the Resurrection of the Dead " (Anchor Book-Doubleday, New York, 1995). Years later, I published considerations on the philosophy of nature in peer-reviewed journals [191, 222, 286, 287]. Years later, it turned out that the thesis presented in the aforementioned book is rationally justified, if we assume the truth of one of the proposed models of the structure of the universe, called "the Block Universe". This model is promoted by a well-known physicist and cosmologist Max Tegmark [ see his lecture ‘What is Space-Time?’ accessible at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c8Lb44wOOQ ] It seems to me that Tipler's (and my) publications are examples of ‘indirect psychotherapy’ helpful in the case of 'decreased sense of meaningfulness'. The actualized message of my 'syncretic outlook of the world' , useful as the tool of ' indirect psychotherapy ' is accessible under http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/filozofia.htm I have repeated this message in many publications [71, 105, 107, 134, 191, 222, 286, 287]. My ideas from the realm of philosophy of nature are known and recognized. For instance see the web page ‘Mit E-Counselling gegen Depressionen’ https://www.innovations-report.de/fachgebiete/medizin-gesundheit/bericht-20499/ e. Activity after the start of the era of Internet I have begun to be interested in new possibilities, offered by the Internet in years 1996 -1997. My first activities, then, consisted on sustained exchange of ideas in so called scientific discussion groups like: sci.physics, sci.med, sci.philosophy, alt.sci.physics-new.theories. My contribution and conclusions from these discussions (in English), essential for the subject of psychological condition, 'deficit of meaning' are recorded in my website: "Medical Phoenix Project". These conclusions were published also in Polish in the book: "The gap of happiness – search for meaning " [134]. It enabled me also to prepare the content of the mentioned, important website: https://www.angelfire.com/ga3/gean/cosmolife.htm (see also: https://www.angelfire.com/ga3/gean/theorie.htm ). The rise and development of the Internet made me realize that with the help of this net will be possible to render accessible many text useful for patients, as information, advices, counseling and tools of 'indirect psychotherapy'. At that time so called "Foundation by name of Stefan Batory" allocated (by competition) to me in 1997 a little grant, which facilitated the implementation of the website for supporting the treatment taking into account the psychological and social circumstances. The same website presented also the reasoning and indications for managers of health care services, who would be interested with mentioned ‘holistic approach' to medical diagnostics and treatment. The organization of medical services considering psychological and social conditions of patients decreases the average cost of medical care. The national or regional health care organization could diminish expenses and simultaneously rise patient’s satisfaction. I published data about our supporting websites in many journals and presented them on many conferences [121, 122, 124, 125, 140, 143, 144, 146, 148, 153]. We elaborated and implemented also the websites facilitated technical aspects of scientific endeavors [146]. We also noticed very early the growing importance for e-medicine of the implementation of mobile telephony, which was reflected by the publication of the paper subtitle: "Remote support in emergence medical situations by Internet service, accessible by mobile phones" [167]. Probably, by reason of these endeavors I was invited to present lectures on "Telemedicine & Telecare International Trade Fair with Educational Program", held in Luxemburg in April 2002 [165,166] f. Activity after transfer of my Department to Faculty of Public Health of SMU in 2001 and after undertaking of teaching in the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. Chair and Department of Internal Diseases, leading by me was transferred in 2001 from Faculty of Medicine to Faculty of Public Health of our Silesian Medical Academy. It is related to the plan of the rector to extend the medical school and rename it as ‘the medical university '. It didn’t change the profile of our diagnostic and treatment activities. It changed however a little the profile of educational programs and some scientific objectives. Considering the essence of the notion 'public health', I have developed some new subject of the investigations in this domain. I have concluded that one of extremely important problem of ' public health ' is the ongoing depopulation of most of European countries. It was known that so called 'children/woman ratio' for all EU countries was estimated to be about 1,5. The value 2,1 is necessary to maintain the steady number of the population. It causes the decrease of overall European populations. At that time the 'Research, Technological Development & Demonstration Commission of EU' announced the calls for proposals for action line of "New and Emerging Science and Technology - INSIGHT projects… designed to investigate and evaluate new discoveries or phenomena which may bring new risks and potential problems for European society. Their aim was to generate and consolidate scientific understanding, as well as to assist in formulating responses to address such problems... ". So, I submitted the outline of the project entitled: " Risks of actual cultural, spiritual and economic pattern for the depopulation of Europe - investigation of possible, necessary modifications ". The text of the project is accessible under: https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/insight.htm The project was reviewed by the RTD&D Commission of EU. The result of the evaluation of this project of scientific research is accessible under http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/evaluation.htm However I didn't receive the grant, but I am very satisfied from the result of this evaluation. The expert of RTD&D Commission of EU wrote inter alia: "...This proposal is based on a genuine insight about European depopulation and its potential impact on many important characteristics and elements of European society. There can be no doubt about the potential risks and high scientific uncertainties involved..." "...The project has clearly defined and well- focused objectives, but they are not entirely appropriate to the INSIGHT programme. The proposers assume that they know, in outline, what the problem is, and how it should be addressed, and they envisage exploring how their presumed optimal solution could be implemented..." "...A multi-disciplinary, fairly ambitious approach to assess the underlying causes for decreasing birth rates; however, the authors seem to have the result of their studies already at hand, including the (rather ideologically influenced) "remedy", which has bean debated for a hundred years..." "...The project could offer useful information to European the policy makers, even if some objectives seem to be difficult to implement, as a new political party oriented only to the problems of depopulation or to new cultural patterns..." "...This proposal is not really suited to the INSIGHT programme because it is too dogmatic....". In my opinion the problem of depopulation of Europe will not disappear, so our project can be treated as 'a ready pattern for the action when people realize serious severity of the ongoing demographic trend or probably even 'demographic catastrophe' (see also our later efforts which resulted in development of a monograph) [255] https://www.pwsz.nysa.pl/sitecontent/oficyna/kryzys_demograficzny.php In the time of so called ageing society (what is caused, of course by low birth rate) another important problem of the domain of ‘public health' is the organization of support for elderly people. So we proposed the project of scientific research sub title: "Wellbeing and health of older people - enhancement of new forms of care and help by a 'personal and societal online helping tool' " The text of this project is accessible under: https://arc.pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/old.htm In time of ageing society and ongoing depopulation arises also the problem of appropriate social and psychological prerequisites to point out the immigration politics of European Union (as well as Poland ). We presented our ideas about this problem in the website http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/immigration.htm (unfortunately, yet now in Polish language only). The possible intention to create in most European countries the multi - cultural, multi - ethnic society (like in USA and even Great Britain) should take into account that apart of unusual (however also possible solutions), probably the future, massive immigration will happen from neighboring countries characterized by high birth rate. It means that we should consider the massive immigration flux from Islamic countries. By this reason many question related to 'possibilities of peaceful coexistence or cultural integration' arises . It is the domain of 'public mental health' also. So, we have begun to discuss the possibilities of countermeasures towards fundamentalism [236] By reason of moving of the Chair and the Department of Internal Diseases led by me from to the Faculty of Medicine in Zabrze to the Faculty of Public Health in Bytom – it was necessary in 2002 to undertake new tasks of teaching and research. It discussed it in a published article [168]. The mentioned topics from the realm of public health inspired to considerations the methodology of searching for solutions for difficult social problems [171, 177]. The challenge of teaching in Public Health Faculty and in Nursing Institute resulted in the development of several publications specific to these fields of study. Several of these publications concern the concept of health and methods of the assessment of health status [178, 182]. I published also the text related to the reconstruction of the health care system, subtitle: "Reflections on the principles of effective health care system and proposals for the reconstruction of the health insurance system". Another issue related to the public health was the trial to draw attention in the international forum on abnormalities associated with so-called pandemic "swine flu" and purchase of vaccines. The Internet Journal of World Health and societal Politics published my open letter related to this problem [199]. Several works in this period concerned the issues of medical ethics and basic concepts of holistic medicine [183, 187, 188, 190, 204]. Other papers published in this period took up the issue of the method of the assessment of the stress experienced by patients and assessment of the general mental condition or the mental health [195, 198, 200,203]. One of the articles of these issues was under the title "Reflections on key difficulty of communication of partners as the cause of the growing number of divorces [205]. Working in the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa enabled me to participate in the implementation of several projects in the realm of LLP/ Erasmus program. I used the opportunity to travel to foreign universities to presented my ideas in form of lectures in some EU countries (Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium). Each of these activities led also to the creation of a separate website, presenting these lectures. The list of these sites is available under: http://pwsz.nysa.pl/~andrzej.brodziak/e-learning.htm Often it was also the beginning of scientific collaboration. For instance, it enabled me to carry out comparative studies of mental condition (psychic health) of the Polish students and students of other countries (Czech Republic, Belgium). I presented these results in several publications [196, 200] Also, just in this period 2002 – 2010, I have developed my concepts related to the metaphysics and philosophy of nature. I published some papers on the subjects of philosophy in relation to the sense of meaning of human life and ethics. The title of one of my papers devoted to these topics is "Panspermia, pantheism, the theory of intelligent design as difficult dilemmas for lecturers and students" [188]. Later, I managed to publish the important papers about „The theory of people's participations in recurrent reoccurrence of the next version of the Universe (TWLNOS) in Polish and foreign magazines [190,191,192]. Another publications related to this subject are "Participation of people in cosmic evolution and the sense of human life", "Theories attributing meaning to human life and promoting health”. I returned to these issues even later [286, 287]. I hope that this theory will gradually gain understanding, especially that similar concept was published a little later by James Gardner ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/605571.Biocosm ) and by some famous cosmologists (see http://www.clemvidal.com/ ) In the period 2008 – 2011 I spent a lot of time and effort to investigate and understand completely new issue in the field of molecular determinants of disease. Namely, I considered consequences of existence of the so-called human endogenous viruses (HERV) for the pathogenesis of certain chronic diseases. I presented the results of the review of experimental data on this subject in papers sub titles: [ Diseases conditioned genetically or rather caused by perinatal activation of endogenous retroviruses inherent in us for millions of years- the necessary modifications to understanding of the pathogenesis of many diseases -n Polish] [201]; "Activation of endogenous retroviruses by infection of the mother's body during early pregnancy - the likely cause of schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis" – in English [207]; “The role of human endogenous retroviruses in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases” – in English [210]. I considered in this period also the intriguing phenomena if resistance of some people to the HIV infection. I published this review in papers sub title.: [ HIV and AIDS - current dilemma ] - in Polish [208] and "Epidemiological data and genetic and immunological factors of people insusceptible to HIV infection or characterized by slow progression of AIDS" – in English [201]. g. Scientific activity after employment in 2011 at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health on the position of an independent researcher. In 2011, by reason of the retirement age I ceased to work in the Medical University of Silesia, but I took immediately the job in the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health on the position of an independent researcher, still continuing to work at the University of Applied Sciences ( https://pans.nysa.pl/ ) So, from the year 2012 - I focused my efforts on topics related to environmental health (in a broad sense). According to my convictions the domain of environmental health should include not only the considerations of problems of pollution, impacts of physical, chemical and bacteriological influences at home and at work - but also the influence of social, psychological and cultural factors. Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health located in Sosnowiec – at that time - in addition to research activities focused on the above-mentioned pollutions also was leading the Regional Center for Acute Poisoning. This center was treating on average during one year about 950 people due to accidental poisoning or due to poisoning resulting from a suicide attempt. Besides IOM&EH was leading a Department of Internal Medicine and Allergology - often making expertise's of the health status of patients. Being a clinician, I focused in my work in IOM&EH also on activities in hospital departments. In the beginning of my work in IOM&EH (October, December 2011) - I elaborated the proposal for a grant for research presented to National Science Center http://www.ncn.gov.pl/ . The title of the proposal was.: "Evaluation of existential, living and social charges and mental condition of the population of Silesia through data collected in the Regional Poison Center, supported by measurements of potential biochemical markers of severe depressive syndromes". This proposal didn't receive the support in the form of a grant. The reviewers of the Committee of the National Science Center assigned 40% ranking for this proposal, however they wrote - inter alia - "The project refers to the legitimate assumption that the indicators of suicide may be a good marker of the public mental health…" ; "Strong side of the project is the indication how to develop statistical data on the structure and description of the group of people who attempted suicide". Nevertheless, as the result of the endeavors of elaboration of the project we published some papers clarifying the proposed methodology, namely.: 1. [A method of evaluation of existential burden and mental health - preliminary data from patients, who attempted suicide by taking an intoxicant] [211]. 2. [Biochemical markers of depressive disorders – a new concept of the diagnostic significance of its response to acute stress] [212] Further attempts to validate the reasoning presented in this research project, sent to the National Science Center consisted on elaboration of specific case studies, presenting the chosen patients, who attempted suicide by taking poisonous substances and was resuscitated at the Acute Poison Center. It is presented in the article.: 3. [Analysis of clinical data of three patients treated in the center of acute poisoning due to suicide attempt - aimed to differentiation of existential and social determinants from causes resulting from mental disorders] [217]. The assumption that the notion of environmental health includes also the influence of family relationships, social, psychological and cultural impacts inclined me to realize some research together with the employees of the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa (where I worked, at that time simultaneously). This cooperation has enabled the studies, which are presented in the papers: 4. [The tool useful for general practitioners, home health care nurses and social workers in assessing determinants of the health status and treatment of patients visited in their homes] [213]. This paper was also presented during the international conference: "International Week" organized by Tomas Bata University in Zlin (Czech Republic) held on 16-20.04.2012 5. Because the ongoing discussion and debates about minority sexual orientation is also important for the mental (cultural, social and psych-social environment) – I decided to elaborate the comprehensive and accurate review of the recent experimental data on the medical aspects of the problem. This has led to the submission of the article sub title.: [ Biological and environmental determinants of sexual orientation ] [216]. 6. Some of my efforts - at that time - were dedicated to trials of systematization of the knowledge about the most common diseases such as atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, asthma [223, 224]. 7. The most important problems of the environmental health (environmental medicine and public health) encompass (1) the demographic crisis (co called depopulation) and (2) the challenges caused by aging of population. I devoted the cycle of papers [214, 215, 221, 226] to the problem of "The decline in the birth rate and possible remedies". I formulate the recommendations for institutions of different levels, which probably could be effective (of course – if applied). Another cycle of my papers [211, 212, 213, 217, 218, 220, 222, 225] presents efforts, which could be seen as the realization of the scientific project sub title: “Methods for the assessment of health status, determinants of psychological and mental capacity of the nervous system and procedures to improve cognitive functions that affect the overall health". This series of papers is important for the possibility of a real impact on the population's aging population. Some papers of this series concerns the structure and mechanisms of working memory [218], which is important for the practical possibilities of improvement of cognitive abilities of older people [228]. In the years 2012–2015, I took up again the subject developed in fact from the beginning of my scientific activity - namely the issue of understanding and bringing closer knowledge about how the brain works. In 2013 I published an extremely important work entitled: "A current model of neural circuitry active in forming mental images [219] being the development of the publication "Neurophysiology of the mental image " from 2001 [157]. Both of these publications are cited very often till now. In 2018, Wiesław Galus and Janusz Starzyk published a book entitled ["Consciousness? - But it's very simple"] (Warsaw, Bel Studio, 2018) in which they reproduce (with my permission) the basic drawing (diagram) enabling understand what the essence of imagination (imagery) is i.e. the recall of data realized in human brain in order to realize a specific thought process. I finished to work at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health in 2017. h. Scientific activity in the time of working at the position of the Head of the Institute of Nursing and Dean of Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. My scientific activity in the years 2002 - 2022 was conducted on the basis of three institutions mentioned above. One of my most important scientific paper, namely "The role of human endogenous retroviruses in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases", published in 2012 was the last publication affiliated yet at "Chair and Department of Internal Diseases" of Medical University of Silesia [210]. Many further publications in years 2011-2017 were affiliated mainly at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health. Many of these publications were performed with cooperation of the Institute of Nursing and afterwards with the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. The works carried out at the Institute of Nursing concerned mainly the holistic methods of diagnosis and treatment. They include works on psychotherapy carried out by nurses (life review psychotherapy, story theory, the deepest personal truth) [235, 249, 283, 284, 285]. Some of these works relate in particular to the methods envisaged in the care of the elderly, among others suffering from sleep disorders [278]. The achievement was also the publication of our original articles on most controversial, difficult ethical dilemmas of contemporary European societies. Namely, I published papers presenting the results of surveys carried out in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia regarding: (a) pro-life - pro-choice attitudes [274, 280, 281, 282], (b) emergency contraception [276], (c) harm caused by new psychoactive substances compared to marihuana [242], (d) the issue of the ability to integrate immigrants [275]. My most important works from this period are those that concern new, holistic methods of diagnosis and treatment as well as family counseling. Among them are works on psychotherapy and various forms supporting it, implemented by nurses [283, 284, 285, 288]. We have published papers on the importance of caring for the elderly, especially about significance of loneliness [289], gullibility of older people [288, 297], their awareness of sexuality [294, 295, 296], susceptibility to falling into delirium [299, 300, 301, 302]. I think, that my significant achievement was the publication of two articles related to understanding of the Universe (the worldview) in the context of its influence for feeling of sense and well-being [286, 287] In the field of holistic nursing (family counseling) are also our works devoted to methods of improving the quality of public mental health [303, 304]. One of my papers discusses the controversial topic of involving in the teaching process of very expensive so-called high fidelity mannequins [279]. Some of the papers published during this period concerned basic problems in the field of physiology of the human body. This includes articles on the physiopathology of the newly discovered "brain cleansing of waste metabolites system", i.e. the glymphatic system [277, 290]. Another such specialized paper is related to the conclusions from the effective use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for understanding psychopathology of depressive syndromes and the essence of self-consciousness [292]. Since the year 2017 all my scientific papers are affiliated at University of Applied Sciences in Nysa. Participating in teaching of nursing I promoted a specific point of view of a person who is a medical doctor. I believe that for this reason I noticed and promoted the attractiveness of gathering advanced competences such as ‘practicing psychotherapy’ or advice of a sexologist [291]. I also promoted the idea, that skills, knowledge in the realm of psychophysical examinations should be performed also by nurses [233], I believe that our efforts to present concrete data on the competences of nurses in implementing sex education and the importance of awareness of sexuality for the health of older people stand out from the activities of other nursing schools [296, 298, 309, 310]. . i. Scientific activity after resignation from the position of the Dean of Faculty. During the period of the epidemia of SARS-Cov-2 I resigned in 2020 from the position of the Dean of the Faculty. However I continue the teaching activite as a lecturer of several university courses. I continue also the scientific activity. Participating in defining the subject of graduate and MA theses of nursing students, I recently promoted the implementation of the principles of so-called narrative medicine, which is now extensively developed. The example of the defended thesis considering the recommendations of the narrative medicine is: {Sylwia Szczotka. Description of the course of treatment of a patient with critical lower limb ischemia, taking into account the postulates of narrative medicine - defended on June 2022}. In 2020, I published an important short text titled "Medical personnel can influence climate change by affecting eating habits" [305]. Continuation of education in nursing during the Covid-19 pandemic prompted us to propose new teaching techniques adapted to the lockdown circumstances [311]. We presented this idea in the paper entitled: “Recording and sharing of online discussion with students occurred useful also after the epidemic is over.” In the year 2021, I published (with my coworkers) one of the most important paper of my life. We presented, in this article, the model of neural circuits essential for a theory explaining the feeling of self-awareness. The theory take into account the role of the brain's electromagnetic field [312]. As part of his integrating theory, we consider the usefulness of explaining the perception of qualia by Stuart Hameroff’s and Roger Penrose's 'Orch OR theory'. We argue that our theory of imagery is important for understanding the essence of consciousness. We believe that the extrapolation of his theory makes possible to consider the existence of the emerging planetary consciousness [313]. My letter to the editorial office of 'Psychiatria Polska' entitled: "Spreading skills of recognition of the manifestations of borderline personality disorder could save many lives", published in 2022, has a great practical significance [313]. In the year 2023 I published two important articles in a innovative journal "Qeios". These papers are listed as items: 316, 317. Publications of the year 2023 - after the rapid spread of effective artificial intelligence systems Over the years of my scientific and publishing activity, I have repeatedly made efforts to reproduce the known cognitive human activities in artificial systems. These were my works on the algorithmization of medical diagnostic reasoning and "medical expert systems". In particular, I presented the impact of my important publication in this field is the above-mentioned article: { Brodziak A, Ryś M. The unit of neural networks modeling recall of mental images by oscillation of feedback loops caused by change of set point signal. Problems of Medical Technology. 1990; 21(1): 30-37. https://basiclearning.angelfire.com/equimerec-2.pdf } on undersenting of recdesnt A.I. endeavous in the paper : 316. Brodziak A, Romaniuk F. The functional unit of neural circuits and its relations to eventual sentience of artificial intelligence systems. Qeios, 2023, http://doi.org/10.32388/82VRPG. i. Participation in the work of scientific societies I am an active member of the Polish Society of Physicians and Polish Society of Internal Medicine. I presented my first scientific paper just during the meeting of Silesian Branch of Polish Society of Internal Medicine [1]. n the years 1978 - 1981 I was the chairman of the Section for Cybernetics of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine, once established by prof. T. Bogdanik. I organized the VIII and IX symposia of this section. Proceedings of these conferences can be found in major medical libraries. The report of the IX Symposium was published by the journal.: Polish Archives of Internal Medicine, 1981; 65: 253 - 254. I am a member of the "International Brain Research Organization." j. Supporting the development of the research staff I supervised; I was the tutor of about 30 doctoral dissertations. Among my doctoral students two of them were physicians specialized in the field of radiology, one of them is a psychiatrist, one of them is a neurologist and another one the physician of infectious diseases. Diuring my leadership of the Department of Internal Diseases six my coworkers gained the degree of Associate Professor (dr hab. n. med.) The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n. med. Małgorzata Muc-Wierzgoń was entitled: "Modeling the biological activity of tumor necrosis factor (TNF alpha) and its soluble receptor in certain acute and chronic diseases". The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n. med. Barbara Zubelewicz – Szkodzinska was: "Study of the effect of the central administration of morphine on plasma corticosterone and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in blood and mRNA expression of IL-6, in the brain, pituitary and adrenal glands in the course of chronic inflammation in rats". The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n. med. Ewa Ziolko was: "Treatment of Hodgkin's disease by administering of bleomycin by intralymphatic route". The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n. med. Ryszard Braczkowski was: "Inhibition of growth of human osseous sarcoma by JV-1-38 - antagonistic analog of growth hormone releasing hormone, insulin-like growth factors - influence the development of cancer". The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n.med. Teresa Kokot was: "Evaluation of variability of secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF -alfa) and its receptor in colorectal cancer". The title of the Associate Professor dissertation of dr n. med. Ewa Nowakowska was: "Insulin-like growth factors in patients with colorectal cancer with concomitant overweight and obesity". I was the tutor for the procedures of training to become the specialist of general (internal) medicine for ~ 40 physicians and also the procedures for Ph.D. degree for ~ 30 physicians. Besides, since teaching at the Faculty of Public Health of Medical University of Silesia, and the State Higher Vocational School in Nysa was the tutor of approximately 400 BA thesis and about 100 master's dissertation in the field of public health and nursing. k. Participation in education and training of postgraduate students. The Teaching Department led by me for 30 years of its existence realized the education of internal medicine. Since the first year of study of internal medicine involves not only the acquisition of skills of physical examination, but also the skill of the performance of the medical interview I was able to pursue and emphasize the original lectures on conversation with patients. The talk with the patient is essential for the practical implementation of the holistic treatment of problems reported by patients. I was teaching the students of medicine how to consider psychological state of patients. In the years 1985 - 1995 - I and the team led by me, realized teaching of the subject "medical informatics". It was a time when computers were already so widespread that Dean of the Medical Faculty feel obliged to initiate such a subject of teaching. There was, however at that time not many enthusiasts to transfer this kind of knowledge. By reason of my known interest, as described above, the then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Zabrze, commissioned me and my team to teach these topics to medical students. Since 2002, the time of the transfer of the Department led by me to the Faculty of Public Health we was obliged to grasp the possibility of teaching some subjects from the field of paramedical professions such as emergency medicine, public health and dietetics. l. Organizational activities. Over 57 years of professional work I realized various organizational activities. Shortly after my Ph.D. degree - working in the Department of Gastroenterology (Silesian Medical University - led by Professor Kornel Gibinski) - I organized the Laboratory of Computer Sciences and the Out-patient Department for Psychosomatic Diseases. At that time, I used the first computer network in Silesia, which was in some sense the precursor to the current Internet. It was a network owned by the Ministry of Mining and Energy. My biggest organizational endeavor was - as I mentioned - the organization of the Teaching Department and Hospital Ward of Silesian Medical University. This unit was established on the basis of the then Municipal Hospital No.1 in Bytom, so the aims and objectives of the Hospital Ward were related also to serve patients from the area of city of Bytom (under the regime of permanent medical duty). The Hospital Ward was initially located in the old hospital building. In 1987 the Department moved to the so-called „new pavilion", while increasing the number of beds to 76. We were running also the out-patient departments of hematology, endocrinology and diabetology. Since starting my work at the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa I was organizing the activities of the Institute of Nursing. In 2015, I helped to launch at University of Applied Sciences in Nysa the education of nursing in form of MA graduate studies (so called studies of secondary degree). In accordance with the recommendations of the Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Health, it was necessary to achieve this goal to have an acting research laboratory. This prompted us to organize laboratory enabling so called psychophysical examinations, that is tests that psychologist usually carry out on candidates for heavy work. m. c. Remarks from
advanced
civilization
perspective:
Scientific endeavors
should be rational and concreate, but there are
dilema and questions that cannot be resolved
today. These topics include the most interesting
and intriguing problems. It might seem that only
some very advanced civilization could answer the
question. However, it seems to
me that it is useful to reflect on such issues
now. This creates motivation to work for many
young scientists. It is also a form of creative,
intellectual entertainment.
So attempts are
being made to give preliminary answers to these
difficult questions. There are resources for
such considerations. Below I present the
proposed list of such topics. Among the
available resources, I also present my own
articles. |
