Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded by 22 Illustrious women on the campus of Howard University, in Washington D.C., on January 13, 1913. They were determined to de-emphasize the social aspect that was associated with sororities at that time, and pledged to focus on serious endeavors and concerns of their community. Their ideals have proven to withstand the test of time. Eighty-Seven years later an idea that was concieved by these collegiate women has become one of the largest Black women's organizations in the world, with over 195,000 members and over 850 chapters in the United States, Africa, Japan, and the Caribbean. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private non-profit organization dedicated to providing services and programs that promote human welfare.
Founded on Christian beliefs, as well as public service, the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have long been active participants in many historic acts. The first of which was their representation in the Women's Suffrage March of 1913. Delta Sigma Theta provides public service through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
