General John Bell Hood

BORN: June 29, 1831 in Owingsville, Kentucky

DIED: August 30, 1879 in New Orleans, Lousiania

He lost an arm at Gettysburg and a leg at Chickamauga.

In July of 1864 he replaced General Joseph Johnston in the field, but had a string of defeats in Atlanta and Tennessee.

He was relieved from command at his own request in January of 1865. After the war he became a merchant (which he failed out miserably) and eventually an Insurance Officer.

He and his wife both died of yellow fever in 1879, leaving behind 10 children. He is buried at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana.
