The Story Behind:
"Role Model"
I was on ICQ (the chat program), of all places, when I got the inspiration for this tune. I was talking to this girl from somewhere up north, in New York or Vermont or somewhere. Anyway, she was telling me about her life as a Resident Assistant in the dorms at her college. She was a junior, and she was getting tired of "babysitting" the freshmen girls who liked to drink too much and then pass out. I told her that her work was not going unnoticed, and that someday those girls would thank her for her trouble.
Well, later that night, I was mulling the details of our conversation in my head, and I wrote a poem from it. I sent her the poem, and she asked me if I was going to make it a song. I said that I had thought about it, but I was not sure if I could or not. Next thing I know, I had split the poem in half, added a chorus in the middle, and a bridge and a chorus at the end. This is why there are phrases like, "...And these girls may never know..." found throughout the song.
Once I found the right musical progression, I recorded the song, sticking a Floydian, "On The Turning Away"-style outro to the end of it. This is definately one of my favorites.
Lyrics For:
Role Model
You're there to look out for them
When they've drinken themselves out
And you treat them with respect
Dispite the urge to scream and shout
They tax your wits beyond end
The always stress your mind
But dispite the hardships you endure
To them you're always so kind
We all need
A role model
Someone to shine
Beyond their means
We all need
A role model
Someone to help us
Reach our wildest dreams
Everyone needs a hero
A person to lead the way
And these girls may never know
The extreme debts that you pay
But you get your satifaction when
They give you a loving smile
When they simply say, "thank you"
You know it's all been worth your while
I know it's hard
For you to see
How your life
Effects their reality
But in the end
It will all be ok
Because, despite
What you have thought
They listened
Anyway!
We all need
A role model
Someone to shine
Beyond their means
We all need
A role model
Someone to help us
Reach our wildest dreams
We all need
A role model
Someone to shine
Beyond their means
We all need
A role model
Someone to help us
Reach our wildest dreams
Someone to help us
Reach our wildest dreams
