Introduction

My earliest memories of the Suwanee River region in Central Florida are fixed with the images of a teenage boy embarked upon an adventure of exploring underwater caves with his friends in a time when the sport of scuba diving was in its infancy. These memories are punctuated with episodes of fun, fellowship, laughter and tragedy.

The Suwanee River begins its slow, meandering run to the Gulf of Mexico in the still waters of the Okeefenokee Swamp which lies mainly in Georgia's southeast corner. This classic Southern river with its dark, tannic-colored waters bordered by Spanish moss covered Live Oak trees was the inspiration for Stephen Foster's classic song of the Old South entitled Way Down Upon The Suwanee River.
