Germany's Military ca. 1870-1919
FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR 1870-1871

-Bismarck was the German Military Leader

-The German army was made up of many veteran and highly trained soldiers, which made them superior to the French soldiers.

-The main weapons soldiers used were the Dreyse Needle Gun and the Podewils Rifle.

-The German army had an extensive cavalry.

-Prussia won the war which unified many German states, which bagan the German Empire.

WORLD WAR I

-Germany originally hoped for a limited war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, but because Russia mobilized so many troops in support of Serbia, Germany decided to mobilize.

-The Schlieffen Plan, which was named after German Army Chief of Staff, Alfred von Schlieffen, was Germany's strategy to fight a 2 front war.

-Germany planned to secure the western front and then defeat Russia.

-Unfortunately, Germany could not defeat France easily, and became tied down in trench warfare.

-This was the first war that soldiers engaged in trench warfare.

-Progress was measured in meters, not kilometers.

WEAPONS

-Mauser Gewehr, which was used by the German Army, was the most successful bolt-action rifle ever designed.

-Mustard Gas and Chlorine Gas were first used by the German army and proved to be lethal.

LEADERS

-In 1914 as the most efficient army in the world.

-The German army placed great emphasis on high quality training and maintaining a large number of experienced officers.
