German Culture ca. 1870-1919
1870- Napolean III declares war on Prussia. 1871- German Empire proclaimed. 1878-The socialist law becomes effective. 1881- Emperor Wilhelm I gives notice social reforms at social laws (1883 - 1889). 1889- Foundation congress the second international. 1890- Percentage of votes highest in the parliament choices for the social democrats the socialist law new name of the party decays: social-democratic party Germany (SPD). 1891- Party convention concludes a new program (" Erfurter program") 1901- Ernst Ruhmer invents film with photographic sound and reproduction. 1902- The Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded to the historian Theodor Mommsen. 1903- The first final for the German soccer championship takes place at the Hamburg-Altona drillground, the result being VFB Leipzig 7, DFC Prague 2. 1904- Initial publication of the Berliner Zeitung am Mittag, the first German newspaper with no subscription but intended solely for street sale. 1905- Expressionism in painting starts. Also, the artists' community Die Brücke in Dresden is founded by the painters Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel. 1907- The "German Arts and Crafts Society" is founded in Munich. 1908- Europe's first open-air swimming pool for families is opened, at the Wannsee in Berlin. 1909- Police introduce the first four traffic signs in Germany. 1912-With the assistance of German publishers, in Leipzig the "German Library" is established as a collecting center for German literature. 1913- The physicist Hans Geiger develops the geiger counter, used to trace radioactive waves. 1914-1919- Germany deals with World War I and it's consequences.
