It all began when Shinji's mother died. Her soul became infused with Eva Unit 01, Shinji's Eva. Gendo brought Shinji to Nerv so that he could be reunited with his mother, I think. Eva Unit 01 saved Shinji several times without any power given by Shinji.
SO..WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH REI??
Rei Ayanami..is not..well..REAL. So to speak. Rei is a clone of Shinji's mother, and is also a clone of the first Angel, Lilith. So..Rei is half Lilith and half Shinji's mother. STRANGE?? I know. Some support is that in episode...6, Rei 2, before the battle against the diamond shaped angel, Rei and Shinji were talking. Here is thier conversation.
Shinji: Ayanami, just why do you piolit EVA?
Rei: I'm bonded.
Shinji: Bonded?
Rei: Yes. It's a bond.Shinji: you mean to my father?
Rei: To all people.
Shinji: What if this is our last day alive?
Rei: You won't die..
Shinji: What?
Rei: I'll be protecting you.
WHAT DID I MEAN BY: 'THERE ARE 3 REI AYANAMI'S'??
Well, like I said..there are 3 Rei Ayanami's!! The first is killed at a young age. -Uh.. more like strangled by a certain blond~. The second dies during a battle with the 16th angel. The 3rd is then placed in the Nerv Hospital. Rei, always seems to get hurt. She was designed to be the pilot of EVA unit 00.
IS SHE HUMAN??
I really dunno. Maybe she is human. She has many human thoughts and feelings!! This is shown when she smiles at Shinji during the rescue, and when she cries towards the end. She also first uses words of gratitude towards Shinji.

Rei, she is the First Child. (Shinji, the 3rd; Asuka, the 2nd; Touji, the 3rd; and Kaoru, the 5th Child) Gendo (Shinji's father) cares for Rei because she is a clone of Yui, Gendo's wife. She hates the color RED and loves the color BLUE.
HOW MANY TIMES HAS REI SKIPPED SCHOOL; SACRACFICED HERSELF; DIES; ETC.??
LOTS OF TIMES~! And she always comes back for more.
