Abilities


First Strike

First Strike means to strike first (Duh!).When a creature without First Strike blocks a creature with First Strike, the creature with first strike will deal damage first. If the creature with first strike can kill the other creature, then no damage is dealt to the first strike creature. If two creatures with first strike collide, each ability cancels each one out. Therefore, damage is dealt normally.


Flying

This is just common sense. Think about it in real life. Creatures with flying cannot be blocked by creatures without flying. But creatures with flying can block creatures without flying. Not too hard eh?


Flanking

Flanking only occurs when creatures attack. Whenever a creature with flanking is blocked by a creature without flanking, the blocking creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn. Like with First Strike, two creatures with flanking cancel each other out.


Haste

Haste really means "unaffected by summoning sickness". A creature with haste can attack or use activated abilities whose cost includes tapping the creature even if it hasn't been controlled by its controller continuously since the most recent beginning of their turn.


Landwalk

Landwalk is a generic term; a card's rules text usually names a specific type of land (such as in "islandwalk" or "swampwalk"). A creature with landwalk is unblockable as long as the defending player controls at least one land of the specified type. Unlike flanking and first strike, Landwalking abilities dont cancel each other out. (Controlling a creature with forestwalk doesn't let a defending player block a creature with forestwalk if he or she controls a forest.)


Protection

Protection is usually written "protection from [quality]". This quality is usually a color (as in "protection from black") but can be any characteristic, such as a permanent type. A permanent with protection can't be targeted by spells or abilities that have the stated quality, and can't be enchanted by enchantments that have the stated quality. In addition, any damage that would be dealt to it from sources having that quality is prevented. If it attacks, it can't be blocked by creatures having that quality.


Shadow

Shadow is almost like flying (Except that creatures with shadow can't block creatures without shadow). A creature with shadow can't be blocked by creatures without shadow, and a creature without shadow can't be blocked by creatures with shadow.


Trample

Trample is very complicated so listen up (I would just read the example). The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. If all those blocking creatures receive lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among the blocking creatures and the defending player. The controller need not assign lethal damage to all blocking creatures but can't assign any damage to the defending player in this case. If all the creatures blocking an attacking creature with trample are removed from combat before the combat damage step, all its damage is assigned to the defending player. An attacking creature with trample ignores any blocking creatures that can't have damage assigned to them. Assigning damage from a creature with trample considers only the actual toughness of a blocking creature, not any abilities or effects that might change the final amount of damage dealt. When there are several attacking creatures, it's legal to assign damage from those without trample so as to maximize the damage of those with trample. EXAMPLE: You attack with a 3/3 trampler and your opponent blocks with a 2/1 creature. The trampler would kill the 2/1 creature. Since it killed it, remaining damage would be dealt to the controller of the 2/1 if the trampler's controller wants it to. If they do, then the 2/1 would be dead and the controller of the 2/1 would take 2 damage because 3 damage - 1 damage (toughness of creature) = 2 damage.


Echo

Echo is really just a cost split in two turns. First you pay the card's cost as regular. Then, next upkeep you pay the cost again.


Regenerate

Regenerate is used to keep the creature in play after it gets destroyed. If you do, you pay the regeneration cost, tap it and remove it from combat (If it was). You may only regenerate a creature right after it dies (Not if it's in your graveyard). Many beginners get confused about that.


Walls

Wall's may not attack unless they are animated with "Animate Wall, Rolling Stones, etc." Wall's are usually for defense.
