World War One

FRENCH ARMY

The OG version of the French army’s first true tank, the St Chamond. This is one of the earlier versions of the tank; the later version had the armor over the track removed to prevent the tracks from getting clogged with mud and dirt. The flat roof (good for hand grenades – bad for tankers) was redesigned and given a pitch. The tank was very well armed having 4 Hotchkiss heavy machine-guns and a 75mm gun. These “land ships” were not very good at crossing trenches, in one battle all but one of 16 tanks got stuck in the first line of trenches.

I painted the tank with a 3 color camo pattern that was used during WWI.

The OG St. Chamond tank model kit consists of a large solid chunk resin. There were several rather thick mold lines on the bottom of my model. As you can see from the photos I didn’t do such a great job in smoothing these out. Also in the kit there are metals bits for the tracks, 75mm gun, the exhaust system and 4 “rod” machine-gun. The lead machine gun I replaced with brass rod so they won’t bend that easily.

This is a good kit for the price, I plan on getting the other later version of the St Chamond soon.
