Book Recommendations
First off, any book by Bruce Pandolfini is a sure fire winner. I have three of Bruce's books and I couldn't be happier. They are absolutely great! They come from Bruce's publishing company called the Fireside Chess Library. All of those books are fantastic too. Check 'em out!

Chess Openings: Traps and Zaps by Bruce Pandolfini A great book on openings. Actually, one of the best I've seen! Definitely a plus.
Josh Waitzkin's Attacking Chess
by Josh Waitzkin Perfect book that teaches you a few techniques and positions to look for when playing such as: the fork, the skewer, the pig, zwischenzug, and others.
Bruce Pandolfini's Chess Complete by Bruce Pandolfini Ever have a question about anything related to chess and this book's got the answer. 'Nuff said.
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess by Bobby Fischer A fun book with lots of middle and endgame positions in it. A neat system of guess and check leads you to better playing.
Bobby Fischer: Profile of a Prodigy by Frank Brady A superb look into the life of the world's greatest student of chess.
Searching For Bobby Fischer by Fred Waitzkin The father of Josh Waitzkin, Fred leads you through three years of his son's life, describing every tournament and trip and everything else that happened to his little chess genius.
