What's a LARP?
A LARP is a Live Action Role Playing event. Think of it as a play in which everyone you meet is
another character in the play. All of you are on the set, you are all in costume, and you are
portraying a character you have been cast as. All you lack is a script: everyone in the LARP writes the script as you
go along.
So. What's so cool about this particular LARP?
This LARP, Kurt's yearly New York game, has been going on for five years. This'll be number six.
Since he works on them for the remainder of the year, they tend to be full, well-thought, and
(since he has a year to fund each one) sometimes quite extravagant. Players come from as far away as Seattle and Los Angeles to play.
This game, in particular, should be the cat's ass. I might go so far as to suggest that it is all the orifices on every major feline in this hemisphere. The Benton County fairgrounds have been rented -- the whole damned thing -- there have been two bands lined up, there are T-shirts being made, artwork commissioned for the event, a graveyard manufactured on publicly owned grounds...just major cool stuff. I didn't even talk about the slave auction, the high-stakes poker game, the ass-whuppin' contest, the myriad dark rituals so far beyond man's ability to understand that even the attempt sends his soul and psyche screaming from their fleshly envelope, and --
You get the idea. Lotsa stuff happening.
Music? What?
Music. Two bands thus far. Fusion Ball and
Tricky Dick and the Hot Freshmen Girls.
Real bands. Playing real music. Real cool.
Do I gotta play to check stuff out?
Nope. If you just want to come for the bands, come for the bands. There's a $5 charge asked for
at the door for the music. If you're playing, we ask for a donation of at least $10 to cover
expenses. So. If you want to come but don't want to take the chance of trying something new,
come watch the bands and the vampires.
And wear shirts without collars. Our teeth get tired by the end of the night.
Do I need fangs? What do I need?
Just yourself. Costuming adds to the experience (it is majorly cool to see a
vampire in a Victorian walking dress, or one wearing full Harley colors) but the
real point is to play the part. If you have any questions about costuming, we will be happy to answer any queries directed our way. If you have a particular prop or costume you want to wear, that can help attach you to a character. Let us know!
What if I hate the character you guys give me? You won't. We ask a variety of questions about what you've done and what you'd like to do, in order to help match you to a character of your interest and ability. We're writing a gawdawful number of characters, and it's a fair bet that we'll find one that works for you. If we can't find one that makes your happy-meter register, we'll see what we can do to help you find one.
