Digicel Sponsors National Schools Chess Championship

Cellular giant Digicel joins RBTT Bank as sponsors of this year’s 2003/2004 National Schools Chess Championship scheduled to start October 16th. Digicel will be providing the largest sponsorship package in the twenty-eight year history of the tournament. The package will enable the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) to provide more prizes, as well as allow the Federation to reach more schools island-wide.

According to the President of the JCF Ian Wilkinson, the sponsorship represents Digicel’s acknowledgement of the potential of the sport, not only as a recreational activity, but also its potential as a powerful educational tool. “This is the vision which Digicel has invested in and which the JCF is determined to bring to the Jamaican public”.

This year’s Championship will see defending Champions Campion College starting as the favourites, having retained the majority of their players from last year. Their main rivals will be quarter-finalists from last year Ardenne High, who have also retained most of their players.

The National Schools Chess tournament is the main avenue used by the JCF to find new talent in the sport. The tournament has recruited some of the island’s top players over the years including the recently crowned National Champion, National Master Shane Matthews who represented Excelsior, National Masters Jomo Pitterson and Mark Holness who once represented Campion College, National Master Russel Porter who represented Calabar High, FIDE Master Waren Elliot who represented Cornwall College, FIDE Master Grantel Gibbs who represented St. Jago High and National Masters Neil Fairclough, Duane Rowe and Mark Smith who played for Kingston College.

The 2003/2004 tournament will be open to all secondary level schools throughout the island. Schools that do not have a chess club or team, but who would like to institute a club will be offered assistance by the JCF.

** Subscription is a special new package being offered by the Jamaica Chess Federation. It has the following benefits:

  1. Covers costs for all teams indicated at A, B and C;
  2. Allows all students within the school to sign up with the Jamaica Chess Federation as members for free for 1 year.  These students will be able to play in all JCF tournaments during the 1-year period by just paying the entry fee.  These students must however be members in good standing of the schools chess club. Schools Chess clubs will therefore have to develop a means of identifying students in good standing.
  3. All students playing in the Schools Chess Championship will receive a rating from the Jamaica Chess Federation
  4. Schools who choose this option will be required to have in place a schools chess club, which meets at regular individuals.
