When Jamaican-born Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley visited Jamaica early in 2000, he imparted critical advice to some of Jamaica's chess players on how to aim for the Grand Master title.
Below is a summary of that advice.
Get into a habit of annotating your games.
Have a friend review your games. Try to have someone to work with.
Seek to participate in thematic tournaments where possible.
Get and make use of a Chess database Programme such as Chess Base.
Stay focused when playing.
Use your opponents intentions to your advantage when playing.
Try to read books by authors such as John Nunn and John Watson. Click here to view some chess reviews by John Watson.
