Gory Patients

As you might expect from a medical platoon, we see our fair share of bloody patients. If you have a queasy stomach, you may want to skip this web page. If your curiosity just won't let you click the "back" button, then scroll down... and satisfy your penchant for gore, you blood-thirsty person!

Nasty Feet

These first two photos, while gruesome, do not contain much blood. The first photo is of THE patient that got stung by a scorpion while putting on his boot (remember that from one of my earlier letters?). Look closely, the bite site is right over his second toe (the one next to the big toe). This second photo is of a strange rash on the feet. The rash is the patch of bloody looking spots on the tops of his feet. I don't remember what was the final diagnosis, but it looked like it would make an interesting picture.

Last chance to click back... the following pictures are BLOODY!

Hand Surgery

This young man had an "accident" trying to put his fist through a wall in Fort Riley. As part of his treatment, the docs installed a plate to hold the fractured bone together. After deploying with us, he started to experience pain directly over one of the screws. These two pictures show various stages as we attempted to surgically remove the offending screw. That first photo shows Doc Schultz working on the hand; the second is of the hand after we were done.

Cracked Head

One of the first bloody patients we treated was this young man. He was doing some weight lifting during his spare time when this happened... Since we didn't have a pull down bar for working the latissimus dorsi (back muscle), the guys made a homemade version with a bar, some cord, and a pulley. The cord snapped, and this guy pulled the bar with full force straight down on his head! The first picture is a shot BEFORE treatment; the second was taken AFTER treatment. The medic clowning around with the scalpel blade is SGT Taylor Leblanc; he thinks he's helping...
