[Beginning]
Hmmm...Sephiroth is first seen in the Shinra building when you are trying to break Aeris out of there. He is on a killing spree (note all the blood on the floor which you have to follow to find a kind of important dead body with his sword sticking out of it) After that scene, Cloud tells the story of how he "knew" Sephiroth from being in SOLDIER, and then how Sephy went insane and found Jenova.
[Personality]
Sephiroth is (other than messed up) a pretty cold guy. Fanfics like to show him and Zack being friends (sometimes even more than friends which makes no sense because Zack is obviously straight if he dated Aeris). Most of the time he's babbling about how he's going to find the Promised Land for his mommy (he's more of a momma's boy than Lavitz -.-;;;). If he wasn't insane and did some things that make me very very unhappy then I may have thought he was cool
You get Seph to fight with you during the flashback, and he is VERY powerful.
[The Truth]
Warning! This section explains nearly everything about Sephiroth. If you don't want to know, then don't read!
Sephiroth is the son of Hojo and Lucrecia. Hojo injected Jenova cells into Lucrecia, so the unborn baby (Seph) would have them and be really powerful. Well, Seph did come out very powerful, unfortunately for the gang. No one can tell how old Seph really is (you'd have to figure out Vincent, Lucrecia and Hojo's ages to find that one, and i really doubt anyone has done that). Seph became a really great SOLDIER general, but in his mission to Nibelheim (with Zack, who was the other SOLDIER and Cloud, who was just a regular guard kind of person)he found information about Jenova and started to go crazy, finally finding out why he was different. He burned down the town and went to the Nibelheim reactor (what they were investigating in the first place) and found Jenova (and ripped her head off -.-;;;). After that, Seph is missing for a while and then comes back to haunt Cloud who is one of Jenova's "puppets". Sephiroth really has no mind of his own at this point, he is under the influence of Jenova.
