When Squall takes his SeeD test (liberating a town in Galbadia) he finds that Zell is one of the other SeeDs in training that will be in his group.
[Personality]:
Zell is great. He's always bouncing around and punching air, trying to look all tough. He and Seifer don't get along at all. Seifer makes it worse by calling him 'Chicken Wuss' (originally Chicken Punk in the japanese version). Zell also earned the nickname "Know-It-All" from Squall because he could usually tell some background information about a place they were in or going to. Zell also has a crush on the girl with the ponytail working in the library and loves hotdogs (bread in the original). He never does get to have one of Balamb Garden's hotdogs til the end @_@. Zell is trying to be a great soldier like his grandfather.
Surprisingly, I've found that Zell's attacks can be more powerful than Squall's. His Limits breaks, similar to Tifa's are pretty good. My Final Heaven is obviously the best.

I think Zell was the only one of the Orphanage gang who actually had a family. His mama lives in Balamb (the town)
