You have all heard Calcutta (Taxi taxi taxi) Dr Bombay is the crazy fake Indian behind that song, which was a megahit at Sommartoppen in the "summer" of '98. That hit was soon followed up by SOS - (The tiger took my family), an album called Rice and Curry, and later the title track was released as a single. Dr Bombay's next singles were Girlie Girlie and Indy Dancing, the latter one released almost a year after Calcutta, and not creating very much attention. Now the Indians themselves have taken the doctor to their hearts. To them Dr Bombay is what the Swedish Chef of the Muppet Show is to the Swedes: a cute anti-hero figure to associate oneself with. So Dr Bombay went to India to work on his success, and then he wisited the rest of Asia and Europe to give interwiews and to appear on TV. Dr Bombay's real name is Johnny Jakobsen and he is from Malmö. Johnny has worn out many aliases on his way to fame. He started out as a country singer called Johnny Moonshine, and he played in local pubs on Friday nights before he became Dr Bombay. He even made a record in '96 called Johnny Moonshine and the troubled water band. Another alias was Dr Mambo, and at that time only his family and friends bought his records. Dr Bombay was born on the 17th of November 1963 and he has a 15-year-old son, Jimmy, who lives with his mother. The doc also has a twin sister, Susanne, a brother Niels and two more sisters: Vinni and Lis, the later one working as his stylist. During his childhood years he travelled a lot together with his mother. India was one of the visited countries, and he says he loves India and the Indians a lot. The Comeback And now Dr Bombay is planning a comeback - dressed in a kilt! Yes, his new look is as semi-Scottish as his former one was semi-Indian. This autumn he will be back as MacBombay. According to Henrik Uhlmann - manager of Dr Bombay it has been uncertain for a long time if the Doctor would return or not, but now it looks like this crazy artist has found himself a new alias. -Many thanks to Linda for supplying this article
