On May 21 th 2001 I decided to do a 1@20 with my level 20 warrior Lord_Gabriel. I
know it’s not as spectacular as a 1@17 or 2@21 or so, but I hoped
this would be fun as well.

Magic: 20 – 28
Dexterity: 60 – 99
Vitality: 40 – 66

17-30 damage

------------------------------------------------------------
Lev 13: Found the stairs down without encountering any monsters.
Lev 14: ditto
Lev 15: Doom Guards and Snow witches.
I moved very slowly to activate as little foes as possible. It kept
me out of big problems. I started in the South West, and took a
corridor in the West to go North. No big problems yet, and I found
Laz’s Lair pretty soon. I equipped the short war bow, and fired some
arrows in the Lair. An advocate saw me, and started shooting, but I’d
already hit Blackjade, and retreated, while equipping my sword and
shield again. She didn’t pose a real threat, and her heart was on the
top of my sword pretty quickly. She dropped a mace.
I went back to get Redvex. I also triggered a snow witch in a nearby
corridor. Killing both of them wasn’t that hard, but I had to use
a few pots. RV dropped a splint mail. I went to town and asked Cain
to ID them. He smiled and said the splint mail was good. I asked what
it was exactly. “AC 30, resist magic +55% and +19 to dexterity.”
(My mail at that moment was AC 32 and +20 to dexterity.) So I smiled
back, and asked if the mace was any good. “Nope, crap.” he said. Ah
well, the mail was good enough to be happy. I sold the mace and my
former mail, bought some pots, and went back down.
One advo left the Lair, and got acquainted with my sword. He didn’t
like it.
I lured the two Hell spawn out one by one, and whacked them. Two
advos were next. They were killed with my bow. Now it was just Leo
and one advo left. Leo decided to come out as well. I equipped my
sword of sorcery, and stone cursed him. The spell didn’t last long
enough, but I managed to trap the betrayer in a corner. He was dead
meat now! He dropped a useless leather armor. After taking out the
other advo, Bloodlust, some witches and guards, I took the pentagram
down.
Lev 16: I started in the hall with that maze-like room. I managed to walk to the small room in between the
two major halls without being seen by someone in the first hall.
There were some Blood knights in that little room, but I activated
one or two of them at a time. Retreating a lot to this room, I
managed to kill all Blood knights in the second hall (with Diablo’s
room in it.) The advos were killed with the bow. I went to town a
few times in this level, and I had little money left. Clearing
everything around the switch room, I accidentally activated three
blood knights at once. I couldn’t handle the three of them, and thus
I retreated. They followed like loyal dogs. (And dogs they were, the
bastards!) Although my dexterity was high, I got hit way too often,
and had to retreat further and further back. There were no real
strategic points, and thus it was very hard. I had to take the town
portal once, and come down again by using the stairs. I fired several
fireballs at them, and walked in big circles (around the stairs, to
the second hall, and back etc.) After a looong fight I finally killed
them. Phew!
I switched the two levers (after going to level 13 to kill some
balrogs and vipers, to get money and buy some pots (I was broke.)) I
lured some knights out (not more than two at a time) and whacked
them. I also lured out two advos and had to kill them as well (with
just several pots left.) After that, I lured out Big D. I retreated
to behind the lever room, but got hit pretty badly by his apocalypse.
I walked around a corner, and wanted to drink potion 8. I
accidentally left clicked, instead of right clicked, while Diablo
showed up. I was very clumsy, and started juggling with two pots,
while I wanted to drink them. It looked pretty stupid, and Diablo
killed me. I restarted in town, and still heard Big D laughing at me
from deep down. But there was something else… I looked at myself, and
discovered I was NOT naked! I had all my stuff on still! That was
impossible! It should be on the ground in front of Diablo’s feet. But
I still had it on! That was weird! (I hadn't died in level 16 in a loooong time and forgot you get to keep your stuff when you die there ;-)
Because I didn’t want to take advantage, I put all my stuff in my
inventory, and equipped only my bow. I didn’t have money or many
pots, so I cleared level 5. I found some stuff and money; sold the
stuff and bought pots. Went back down to level 16 (completely naked.)
I found a mace on the ground which I didn’t bother to pick up before.
Now it was useful, and it was my only equipped thing. I walked around
the lever room, ready to lure Big D away. He wasn’t there! I only
found two red pots, I had juggled with. If I wouldn’t have my stuff
already I could have picked them up now, and so I put back on my good
stuff. (I forgot the ammy though, silly me.) I went South, and found
Diablo (Who moved about a dozen meters South. Don’t ask me why he did
that. I used a wall to prevent Diablo from hitting me back. Actually
he threw me against it. I threw two firewalls before I got knocked
back, but he only stood in it a few seconds. Ah well, just a sword
and shield then. He cast apocalypse several times, but I blocked
most of them. I kept swinging my sword of precision at the big red
freak, and at a certain point, his blood bursted out of his chest,
which colored my armor red. He roared like a wild beast, but then
finally hit the ground. “And stay down!” I shouted.
I did it! I levelled up once, can’t remember when that was, so it
turned out to be a 1@21. Ah well, it still feels good.
