Move 383:  Pebbles and Bits

Smooth Caverns--Early, Day 38 (Marpenoth 21)

The bizarre creature smacked Jana again with two of its arms this time. It followed up with a slap and a flesh rending bite against Blacky. Jana caught it with her sword again, and this time, she penetrated its stony armor. The creature fell to the cavern floor and did not move.

Yuck," Jana proclaimed, staring at the body. "Damn thing was like cutting gravel. Uhm we wanna gut it or just get the hells outta here?" She looked up at the tree and frowned.

"Hang on before gutting it. This fruit does look like real gems," Echo said. Her voice sounded close to the tree. "Should I pick one? Azrun, do you want to detect magic on it?" she asked.

Azrun frowned, "I used up the spell on the monster with the magic missile spell. I had intended it to be the detect magic. I would like to examine the tree and fruit together, though." He moved closer to the tree to examine it.

"Creatures are getting more and more odd the longer we're down here," Renn said from near the cave's entrance; his voice seemed to come closer as he spoke. "Blacky, rest easy for a moment, I'll want to see to your wounds with Corellon's help."

Renn began to chant from beside Blacky almost immediately.

"I can do the spell," Echo offered. "I just thought you wanted to do it. Let me do that before you touch anything."

Renn prayed for Blacky, healing some of the damage he had taken from the strange monster's fierce bite. From over near the tree, Echo was heard casting a spell also.

Blacky stood still for the healing, but kept on his guard nonetheless.

"Alteration magic," Echo said after a moment. "Almost everything in this weird place is. It doesn't look especially dangerous though. I mean, besides the obvious."

"Is it safe to take those gem fruit things, you think?" Jana asked the empty space where Echo's voice had come from last. "Hey, I got a kid to support," she added with a grin.

"There's only one way to find out," Echo said. "Get ready in case something bad happens."

Azrun watched the tree for any visible effects from Echo's actions, "Hopefully, this is just a crystal tree with gem fruit and nothing bad will happen...hopefully."

Jana laughed softly. "Oh, nothing bad ever happens down here."
