Whenever there is vase that you cannot enter, it can be used to warp to a different world. Get the red potion, and drop it on top the vase to be able to enter it and warp. If all the red potions are used up, find a door, then enter and exit it to replenish any previous potions.
There are warp zones in World 1-3 (to World 4-1), in World 3-1 (to World 5-1), in World 4-2 (to World 6-1), and in World 5-3 (to World 7-1). To enter a warp zone, simply find a vase that you cannot enter, carry a red potion to that vase, throw it and enter subspace. Then enter the vase to warp.
To get an extra item, press B repeatedly upon exiting subspace.

Super Mario Brothers 2 (at least the one released as such in North America) was actually a remake of a Japanese game, Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic. The real Super Mario Brothers 2 had already been released in Japan, and it was basically a more difficult version of the original Super Mario Brothers.
