An "Old School" Tricorne era game in 40mm
The Battle of Hoffman's Farmstead.

We played this game at Jay Stribling's home in North Jackson on October 30, 2010. The 40mm troops are owned by John Murduagh who drives from Arkansas to game with us. (NOTE: that is about a 2.5 hour drive, so he really wants to game). John was the game-master of this game. Your correspondent is Jay Stribling.

John has made the troops by home-casting them in Prinz August molds. The troops are semi-flats which means that they look awfully skinny if you look at them one way, and well fed if you view them from another direction! John painted most of the troops but Jay Stribling painted two battalions of infantry and two squadrons of cavalry.

The rules were BAR which stands for Battalions d' Ancien Regime and are definately "old school." John has all of the troops individually mounted but plans to make move stands to cut down on the time needed to move each battalion.

Harzburg Dragoons canter along the road. They are the "Point" of their country's army.

The rest of that squadron, and the second, moving through the woods, pining for open countryside.

Jim Pitts inspects his troops before the battle begins. The painting of Napoleon in the background, a bit anachronistic, is on loan from Tim & Bobbie Chadwick.

Fustrins' Horse lead the Flatsburg dragoons who are still on the road. All the troops on each sice had to debouch fromj the woods on a single road. This lead to a number of delays in gettting the armies deployed, even with the BAR Rules set's generous movement.

The Alderwillinge Regiment with the Jaeger company in front. The red-coated infantry in thier snappy uniforms were part of the Schwabian forces, under Jim Pitt's command.

The Jaegers in their "stealth" uniforms of green and black, under Ed Sansing's command, will eventually penetrate the woods on the Harzburg side of the field and were to end the game firing into the flank of the Harzburg artillery battery.

Fustrins' Horse charge headlong into the first squadron of the Harsburg Dragoons. On the other side of the Hoffman farmhouse may be seen the Flatsburg dragoons who will, a turn later, have their own melee with the second squadron of the Harzburg Dragoons.

The Alderwillinge Regiment has gotten two of it's companies in line and is advancing. Behind them the Muhlehouse Regiment (in Blue with Yellow facings) is marching out of the woods. Note the battalion gun of the Muhlehouse Regiment to the left of the image.

Fustrins' Horse won their melee, driving the Harsburg Dragoons from the field in rout, but were sadly reduced in numbers.

Who were the commanders in this affair?

Jay Stribling and John Murdaugh commanded the army of Harzburg, while Jim Pitts and Ed Sansing commanded the forces of Schwabia.

The Grenadier Battalion of the first Brigade of Harzburg, marching, along with the first Battalion of the second Brigade. The woods through which both sides' entry roads ran consdierably interfered with the deployment of the troops.

A view of the Harsburg forces, three small battalions of infantry in line, beginning to fire heavy volleys at the Schwabian forces. The Hoffman Farmstead, in the center of the battlefield is shown here.

Note the grenadiers to the left of the image. In the next turn, John Murcaugh will charge the Hoffman house. This house proved of vital importance to the game - loaded, as it was, with victory points.

Schwabian forces still pour down the road. The Muhlehouse Regiment has deployed in line to face the Harzburg forces.

Their battalion gun can be seen "peeking" around the corner of the farm house.
