Our 20mm Roman Civil War Game
Romans vs Romans - (Again!)
Using the Field of Glory rules
Photo and commentary by Jim Pitts
The "March of the Elephants" is seen above as the Southern coalition's pachyderms advance. Andrew Warnock commanded the elephants, which were the major striking force of the Southern Roman Coalition's army.
This game was our club's second game using the "Field of Glory" rules set. The game-master was Phil Young We used Phil's beautifully painted 20mm (1:72) plastic Roman armies for this game. The game was played in "The Dragon's Lair" in Pearl Mississippi.
Jim Pitts - Punctilius Pictianus and Ed Sansing - Cialus Magnus took the photos and wrote most of the commentary below. I, your humble web-master, merely added a few lines and did some reorganizing. I (Jay Stribling - Gladius Tucia) was remarked as "Rolling better than usual."

Jim Pitts Punctilius Pictianus has three light infantry battle groups faceing the advancing elephants of Andrew Warnock Elephantus Giganticus. Will the frightening pachyderms tromp all over Jim's skirmishers, stomping them as flat as a country & western singers failed love ballad, or will they do a "Legolas" on the mighty elephants?

One elephant battle group is swiftly broken by the accurate slingshots of Punctilius Pictianus' skirmishers.

But the other two elephant battle groups continue their thundering advance, this time towards one of Jim's two javelin-armed battle groups

In the center, the Northern Coalition's legionary battle group commanded by Cialus Magnus , supported by two Ptolemaic battle groups, move forward against Sean Pitts' Caveat Emptor legionnaires

On the far right, Gladius Tucia's Scythian horse archers attempt to shot up one of the Southern Coalition's legionary battle groups commanded by Thesaurus Xylophone , but make little impression on the armored Romans.

A second elephant battle group of the Southern Coalition is sent scurrying to the rear by the accurately thrown javelins of Jim's skirmishers. They are really earning their solidi today!

When the Scythian arrows don't do the job, Punctilius Pictianus and Gladius Tucia combine to surround Thesaurus Xylophone's legionnaires. This time Jim's slingers and Jay's foot archers, Turcoman horse archers, and Scythian horse archers shoot the legionnaires to pieces. When charged by Jay's two auxiliary foot battle groups, the legionnaires are quickly destroyed.

Andrew Warnock Orangius Julius has wheeled his last elephant battle group into the flank of Cialus Magnus's legionary battle group as Magnus's men engage the lead legionary battle group of Sean Pitts Caveat Emptor . A fierce melee ensues that sees the last of the elephants driven from the field. Sean's legionnaires are destroyed and Magnus pushes on into the second line.

Seeing the Elephants fleeing in the distance. With nothing in front of them, Jim Pitt's Punctilius Pictianus skirmishers break through and head for the enemy camp. "It's pillage time, boys!" Pictianus cries as his battle groups see the ultimate prize beckoning them onward.

While the legionary battle group of Cialus Magnus climbs the hill to engage Sean Pitts' Caveat Emptor second line, Magnus wheels his lead Ptolemaic battle group into the flank of a battle group of pesky medium archers who have been slugging it out toe-to-toe with two legionary battle groups. The archers are finally destroyed, but not before they jam up the center of Magnus' advance.

The figures nearest to the camera are Gladius Tucia's fleeing troops. Bill Hamilton Thesaurus Xylophone advances with a second legionary battle group pursuing Gladius Tucia's auxiliary foot battle groups. second group of auxiliary foot fights it out with another group of legionaries in the left rear while Tucia's medium archers cautiously advance from their haven in the woods to the right.
So, who was the victor in the Roman vs. Roman battle?
The Northern Roman Coalition lost 2 battle groups when we checked for victory about 3pm. The Southerner Coalition lost seven complete units, including all three elephant battle groups, plus two legionary and two auxiliary foot battle groups. Although Jim's skirmishers couldn't take the southern side's fortified supply camp, The Southern Coalition had to withdraw from the field. While neither side had broken the other the Northeners proclaimed victory. The Southern Romans accepted without rancor and lept into their chariots, riding hard to the rear.
Is there more?
More photos are coming! Jim Pitts was on the western flank of the battle and his photos show the western and central parts of the field. The eastern part of the game would have been photographed by Ed Sansing Cialus Magnus and will hopefully show the action between Magnus , Placidius Dementia, Orangius Julius and Exxon Effluvium .
I hope that we will have another game soon but I am afraid that my dice rolling may return to normal. It was distinctly above average in this game. Comments by Jay Stribling - Gladius Tucia.
