 Szmetan - Garcia

Jorge Szmetan (2450) - Guillermo Garcia-Gonzales (2250)
[B89]
Malaga, 1976.

 [A.J.G.]

   A sharp attacking game ... with some really nice moves.

1.e4 c52.Nf3 e63.d4 cxd44.Nxd4 Nc65.Nc3 d66.Be3 Nf67.Bc4 Be7;

8.Qe2 a69.0-0-0 Qc710.Bb3 0-0;
Both sides have played ... The "Velimirovic Attack," one of the sharpest lines in Sicilian Theory!

11.g4!?,
This is the main line according to many books I have on this opening.

11...Nxd4!;
The best move according to MCO.

12.Rxd4[] b5!?13.g5 Nd714.Rg1 Nc5;
The best square for this Knight in this variation.

15.e5!?, (Maybe - '!')
A very sharp attacking move.

(BCO gives this an exclam.)

     [ The main line, according to MCO is:
        15.f4!? f5!; {Diagram?} which transposes to MCO-14; page # 330, column # 27. ].

15...g6!?;
Played to stop Qh5.

16.Rh4!? Bb7;
Black is probably best off developing here.

17.Rg3! Kg7?!; (Maybe - '?')
A case of over-anticipation.

     [  The best line was probably: >= 17...Nxb3+[]; 18.axb3 dxe5!; "~"  with a fair game for Black.

        Black was probably fearful of a line like: 17...Rac8!?; 18.Qg4 dxe5; 19.Rxh7!? Kxh7?
        20.Qh4+
Kg7; 21.Qh6+ Kg8; 22.Rh3, ("+/-")  with a winning attack for White.  ].

18.Bd4! d5[]19.Bxd5!! Bxd520.Nxd5 exd521.e6+ f6[];
Black seems to have defended well and his material advantage will soon tell.

  22.Qh5!!, (Maybe - '!!!')  {Diagram?} WOW!!!
 One of the more surprising moves ever played on a chess board.  (Amazing!!!)

     [ My first instinct was to play the attack with: 22.Rgh3!?, "+/-"

This is pretty good, but nowhere near as forcing as the game. ].

22...Nd3+!?23.Kb1! gxh5;
This is forced now.

     [  23...Rh8?!; 24.Qh6+ Kg8; 25.gxf6 Bxf6; {Diagram?} This appears to be forced.
          ( Or 25...Nxf2?; 26.f7# ).   26.Rxg6+ Bg7; 27.Rxg7+ Kf8; 28.Rxc7+ Ke8
        29.Qg7
, ("+/-")  {Diagram?} and White mates shortly. ].

24.gxf6+ Kh825.fxe7+ Ne526.exf8Q+ Rxf827.Rxh5 Rxf2;
One last trick.

28.Bxf2,
Black Resigns.

(His game is hopeless.)

     [ White wins with no problem after: 28.Bxf2 Nc6; {Diagram?} This is forced.
         (28...a5??; 29.Bd4, "+/-").    29.Rf5! Qe7; {Diagram?} Again forced, Black must stop the
        impending check on f8.  ( 29...Nb4?? ; 30.Rf8# ).   30.Rf7 Qe8; 31.Rg1 h6; 32.Bh4 Qxe6
        33.Bf6+
Qxf6; 34.Rxf6, ("+/-") {Diagram?} with an easy win for White.  ].

One of the most brilliant games on record, but I am just not sure if it is all sound.
