FINAL FANTASY VII BASIC MATERIA COMBOS
[BLUE SUPPORT MATERIA]>>>[MAGIC MATERIA]
Pair up a blue support materia with a magic materia and when you use that magic materia you will get the added benefits of the blue materia. There is a varied assortment of blue support materia with different benefits that you can pair up with the magic (green) materias. Early in the game these are the most basic pairings you can make. Here are some examples:
ALL>>>[MAGIC MATERIA (SUCH AS RESTORE OR LIGHTNING)]
use this type of combo so that the paired magic materia affects all allies (such as with ALL>>>RESTORE) or all enemies (such as with ALL>>>LIGHTNING)
ELEMENTAL>>>[ELEMENTAL-BASED MAGIC MATERIA (SUCH AS FIRE, ICE, OR LIGHTNING)]
use this type of combo in your weapon to get an elemental-based weapon or in your armor to get elemental-based armor; use these combinations in your weapons or armor just as you would the added effect combinations, the only difference being the elemental is used for elemental-based magic materias while added effect is used with status-based magic materias
ADDED EFFECT>>>[STATUS-BASED MAGIC MATERIA (SUCH AS TRANSFORM, MYSTIFY OR SEAL)]
use this type of combo in your weapon to get a status-based weapon or in your armor to get status-based armor; use these combinations in your weapons or armor just as you would the elemental combinations, the only difference being the elemental is used for elemental-based magic materias while added effect is used with status-based magic materias
[BLUE SUPPORT MATERIA]>>>[SUMMON MATERIA]
Pair up a blue support materia with a summon materia and when you use that summon materia you will get the added benefits of the blue materia. There is a varied assortment of blue support materia with different benefits that you can pair up with the summon (red) materias. These types of combos come later in the game and work basically the same way as the pairings mentioned above with magic materias, the exception being that summons automatically deal damage to all opponents and thus an ALL>>>[SUMMON MATERIA] pairing would be both wasteful and unnecessary (unless you are just trying to get the AP on the ALL materia). Here are some examples:
ELEMENTAL>>>[ELEMENTAL BASED MATERIA (SUCH AS IFRIT [FIRE-BASED], SHIVA [ICE-BASED], OR RAMUH [LIGHTNING-BASED])]
use this type of combo in your weapon to get an elemental-based weapon or in your armor to get elemental-based armor; use these combinations in your weapons or armor just as you would the added effect combinations, the only difference being the elemental is used for elemental-based summon materias while added effect is used with status-based summon materias
ADDED EFFECT>>>[STATUS BASED MATERIA (SUCH AS CHOCO/MOG OR HADES)]
use this type of combo in your weapon to get a status-based weapon or in your armor to get status-based armor; use these combinations in your weapons or armor just as you would the elemental combinations, the only difference being the elemental is used for elemental-based summon materias while added effect is used with status-based summon materias; this pairing is particularly devastating with HADES, causing any number of status changes to your enemies, sometimes putting them to sleep, sometimes poisoning them, sometimes causing small, or any combination of these and other status changes; note that CHOCO/MOG not only causes status [STOP] but it is also a wind elemental materia, so this one would work with either the elemental pairing (for a wind based weapon or armor) or with the added effect pairing (for a weapon that causes status [STOP] or armor that defends against status [STOP]).
[BLUE SUPPORT MATERIA]>>>[COMMAND MATERIA]
Pair up a blue support materia with a command materia and when you use that command materia you will get the added benefits of the blue materia. There is a varied assortment of blue support materia with different benefits that you can pair up with the command (yellow) materias. There are certain ones that will work with the command materia and the rest have no effect. For example ALL>>>STEAL does not steal from all enemies but equipping MEGA ALL and STEAL (they don't have to be paired up) does allow you to steal from all enemies. Also there are certain combos that work but wouldn't make a lot of sense to use. For instance [COMMAND] COUNTER>>>SENSE would not really be as helpful as [COMMAND] COUNTER>>>DEATHBLOW. Here are some examples of some of the basic combinations you can make:
STEAL AS WELL>>>MORPH - allows you to steal from the enemy when you use the morph command on him
ADDED CUT>>>DEATHBLOW - gives you another attack on an enemy when you use the deathblow command
[COMMAND] COUNTER>>>MIME - allows you to counterattack with whatever attack was used just before (except someone else's Limit Break); for example if you had just cast Comet 2 or Ultima or Knights of Round, or if you had just attacked with 4x cut or slash all or ... well, you get the idea.
Just a quick note. What I am calling [COMMAND] COUNTER actually appears as COUNTER in your materia inventory. I am adding the [COMMAND] designation because there is not really any other good way for me to show that this works only with command materia (as opposed to MAGIC COUNTER which works with magic and summons). I don't mean this to be confusing but since I have already muddied the water so to speak I thought I would try to clear it up a bit (I could be really bad and mention that the COUNTER materia that appears as a Chocobo racing prize is not really the blue [COMMAND] COUNTER materia but is in fact a pink COUNTERATTACK materia).
In addition there are other blue support materias that will or may work with summon, magic or command materias (with some exceptions). Get creative and experiment to create some really awesome combinations (although you may not use them during regular game play they will come in handy in the battle arena at Gold Saucer and when you face off against ruby and emerald weapons). If you need some help getting started check out my OTHER MATERIA COMBOS THAT WORK page. Send me your best combinations and I will post them in the BEST MATERIA COMBOS page.
