Goldeneye 007, released in 1996 by Rareware was the first real innovative first person shooter to be put out on a console system. The graphics on the game rivaled anything on computer at the time of it's release and did away with the cheesy aiming
systems usually employed in them. Skeptical Magazines and some websites said that the Nintendo 64 would never come out with anything that would be enjoyable to the older consumer... Boy were they wrong. Goldeneye 007 was an instant smash hit offering a new dimension of gaming to those who were lucky enough to own an N64.
Goldeneye has to be ranked among the top 20 best games of all time and the top 5 best console games ever. The one player mode is engaging and boasts a seemingly perfect mixture of all the action and stealth that you would want in a first person shooter. The levels in the game are very well done and make you really feel like you are apart of the movie. Like most games, Goldeneye gives you the option of putting on cheats but for one exception... You have to work for your cheats. This is a very challenging and fun objective that made the game seem to last forever.  Now the multiplayer mode is what makes this game like a diamond in the rough. The way the characters make you feel like you are the character in a deadly showdown with your friend is like an icing on the cake to an already magnificent game. The only thing that would make the multiplayer in Goldeneye better is if you could gain and maintain stats like in the forthcoming game of perfectdark. |
