THINKING THE SAME THING

He climbed out of the wreckage. It took him a while to get out, what with all the debris on top of him, but he managed it nonetheless. He stood up and looked around himself, at the remainder of his city. It looked like he was the only one left. The city was destroyed, and burnt bodies were scattered everywhere, in positions that no living person could go in. Even his family was gone, though he had gotten over that already. He had to. Three weeks under the ground, with two dead bodies and no food. He had to eat them. He just had to. He didn't like it, but it was better than dying under there like all the other people in the city. But now he had to figure out what to do next.

"Hey, we found another one!!" came a cry from someone maybe 100 yards away. "Bring the medical supplies!"

A man, blond hair, spiked, looked to be in his early 20's, ran up to him. *Wow, there are others still alive...*, he thought.

"Are you alright?" said the boy. "We thought we looked through that building already, but we must have missed you. I'm Steve, and you are?"
"Glenn. Who is 'we'?"

The boy pointed to a small group looking under a giant pile of rubble.

"They are 'we'," he replied. "We're survivors of this. You make 6 of us. We're almost done scavaging, I don't think there are any more people still alive."
"I can't believe they did this to us. They think they can just use us as guinee pigs and then throw us away like their diapers!", Glenn shouted. There was quite an echo.
"I can't believe it either. It's sad really."

They were both thinking the same thing. The government's top secret project to breed vampires from human beings. "Put them in a controlled environment, a city, we'll watch over them. Nothing wrong will happen," the top officials said to each other. But something DID happen. Crime rates were so high, and it was all murder. Murder and suicide, and lack of food. Food. Murder. *Mmm* I guess that means they can just kill us. Keep us for decades, then BOOM! It's all gone. They were both thinking the same thing.

"Come on," said Steve, "come meet the rest of the crew."

They walked to where the rest of the group were shoveling piles of dust and debris.

"Everyone, this is Glenn. Glenn, this is Stacy, Lee, Seven, and Mei," Steve pointed at them as he called their names. "Welcome him to the group."

Everyone said "Hi" or "Hello", and a "Hey" to him, at the same time. Stacy was the first to come up to him. She handed him a backpack.

"That's got rations and first aid in it. Don't lose it, everyone has one, and only one." she said, rather coldly, to Glenn.
"We need to go," said Steve. "There's no one else here. We need to get out of here, out of the country. If we're alive, the government will get us while we're here."

They all nodded in agreement, saying nothing, and started walking to the east, out of the city.

By now it was night time, and they needed to stop to make camp. They had been traveling through desolate areas, where there were hardly any people, and it looked as if tonight, they'd be stopping in the local playground. No one was there though, so there would be no problem. They slept under the stars that night.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

There was a loud and long scream, and it woke Glenn up. Apparently it woke up Steve too, as he was already standing up looking at Stacy, who was the owner of the scream. They were both staring at the swing set, just looking. On one of the swings was seven. It looked as if someone had wrapped the top of one of the swing's chains around his neck, and just sat on the swing. His neck was severed, and his face was blue and white at the same time, quite strange. His clothes were tattered and covered in blood. And all they could do was look.

"Who..?" asked Steve with a distorted look on his face.

Glenn shook his head, and went to Stacy to walk her away from the gruesome sight. A few minutes later, Steve walked away from it too, with a thought on his mind. Mei, who had gotten up unnoticed, was checking out the body. She was the "doctor" of the group.

"Maybe he just...killed himself. Maybe he couldn't live with the loss and killed himself...?" Steve asked his friends. None of them said anything.
"We should just get on with our trip," said Mei. "We can't do anything about this, we just need to go before people start coming."
"Good idea," replied Glenn. "I figure if we can just get to Canada, we'll be fine. That shouldn't be hard since we're in Washington."
"Only idea so far, we might as well run with it." Mei shrugged.

They started walking again. It would be days before they got to the place up north, if they even got there. A few hours past, they had been walking nonstop, and needed a rest. They sat down on a patch of grass, in a field. They started making small talk, talking about things ranging from Stacy's job as an accountant, to Steve's childhood scars. Whatever to pass the time. Glenn told them his life story almost, and summed it up in oh, an hour. Mei showed tem all how to do some first aid, because they might need it sooner or later. You never know. All in fun and games I suppose. Lee just sat idly watching, and listening. They started off again, and before long caught up with the night. They were in the middle of the woods, and it was hard to see each other. But they had to stop, it was too dark to go any farther.

"I have to piss," grumbled Lee, and he walked farther into the woods to find a peaceful spot.

Everyone found a tree and leaned on it, probably the most comfortable thing to do in the middle of the woods. About ten minutes passed, and Lee hadn't come back yet. Mei had noticed and spoke up, saying they should go find him. Glenn and Steve acknowledged. Stacy must have been asleep. They walked through the thick shadow, but didn't have to walk far. Right in front of them, lay a mutilated body. It was Lee. Cut into pieces. If not for the remnants of the shirt he was wearing, they wouldn't be able to tell. The bloody mess was horrible, and would have been murder to clean up. Something was dripping on the body. Drip. Drip. They looked up, simultaniously, and saw what appeared to be their accountant. She was impaled, a large tree branch going through her stomach, and the branch had been lodged into the tree somewhere. It was one of the three still alive. No regular person has that kind of strength. You have to be like them to have that strength. None of them said anything, but they all knew it. You could tell by their expressions in the night, just looking at each other, and they just walked away together. Glenn pulled Mei toward him and they secretly split off, away frome Steve.

Glenn whispered, "Steve is the murderer. I can feel it, we need to get away from him, now."
"Heh...I was surprised, I thought you were pulling me over to kill me. But I was thinking the same thing. I think you're right. You must be right. We must."
"There's an old factory nearby, a sewer plant. We can stay there the night, he should be gone by then."

They went as silent as possible straight out of the woods and ran to the factory. The moment they opened the outside basement door, the stench caught them. The foulest smell you have ever smelled came out of that basement. It must have been abandoned. Good thing this was a one nighter. Curiosity got the best of them, so they decided to check the place out. They walked down the damp hallways, looking at odd things hanging on the wall, stains, old papers. Nothing you see everyday. Nothing you want to see every day. The couple was getting ready to open another door, when they heard a creak behind them. The area they came in at. It sounded like a door, or someone stepping on a loose floor board. They tried to run, as fast as they could. The dampness made it hard. They ran all the way down the next hallway, but, like in a nightmare, it was a dead end. Turn around. Maybe you can reach the middle hall before he does, then you can get out from the main exit. That was what they had to do. And they did it too. They ran as fast as they could. So close to the middle hall, so close. But it was too late. The footsteps came too near them, they couldn't get away. And there he was. The blond, spiky haired punk, right in front of them. He was breathing heavily. He must have ran the whole way here. These were Glenn's thoughts. Mei was more along the lines of "I'm going to die now." But he wouldn't get to her, not if Glen could help it. A scowl on his face, Glenn got into a defensive stance, in front of the girl. Steve ran as fast as he could, step after pounding step, as if it were slow motion. He made his last step and finally reached Glenn. It was over and...

With a gasp, and a thud, Steve landed on the ground, a knife in his chest. He lay lifeless in a pool of his own fluids. Glenn bent over, and pulled out his weapon. He wiped it on the wall to get the blood off. Mei buried her eyes in his neck, and wept silently.

"We're safe," she said. "We're safe."
"That's right," came his response, "you are saved." And with that, he shoved the knife into her breast and watched her bleed. She cried her last tear, and said nothing. The most beautiful feeling came over him. He pulled the knife out of her chest. He grinned, licked the knife, and licked the wound. Smiling, he walked away, and out of the factory. Next stop, Canada.
