Falcon's Guide to VMU Hacking
Version 1.0

Here is a mini faq I made for the basics in hacking VMU saves.

Requirements
A Nexus 4x memory card or similar device
(www.levelsix.com)
DCI to VMS and a checksum utility program
(www.franken.de/users/deco/myfiles/myfiles.htm)
download the nexus software at (www.hkems.com) just click on download

Here is what you need to do.
1. Save a new game

2. make sure you make a backup since you can easily corrupt a game saves if you mess up.

3.try for easy hacks 1st (ie. ammo)

4. say you want 999 bullets in RE-CV

5.just fire 1 and save the game

6.now look for the # that changed (ie. 15 bullets changed to 14)

7.now go to edit in the Hex editor program on the Nexus and go to find in the edit file on the upper task bar and input the # 14 You can use the calculator in your windows to convert dec. to hex also.

8.write down the address line you get 1st (ie. 0x0040 this is a hex address)

9. next go back in edit and go to find next just keep this up and write down the address for all the lines you find, there should only be 3-4 choices.

10. now you have narrowed it down if you want to be 100% sure just fire another round and do a search this will most likely give you the correct line.

12. Good luck since this takes alot of luck and patience to figure out.

Editing a save file
After you edit your saved game file, which if you don't know alot about hex editing you aren't going to have much luck in editing game saves. But if you do know a little then find the address that holds the particular code you want to edit. (example if you have let's say 15 bullets in RE-CV )save the game then fire 1 bullet then save it again then where it says edit input the # 14 in where it says find. you should see it says 14. Ok here is the tricky part this is why you need a little knowledge in editing hex.

You need to be sure this line is the one that holds the info you need on the ammo.

If you aren't sure fire another bullet and see if the 14 has changed to 13 you need to save the game again and remeber the line # the 14 was in. If it changed then you know you have the right line if not then where you see edit go there again this time go to find # 13 and you should find the line for the ammo.

You can also use the find next where it says edit located above in the hex edit file on the Nexus to narrow your options down. This is similiar to the Game shark Pro.

Ok this take alot of patients to figure out so make sure you have a back up save nearby incase you mess up.

If you want a easy way to convert dec. into hex just go to the calculator in your startup menu,it includes a dec. to hex program. This is what i use,say you want 999 bullets just enter 999 in dec. then highlight hex and it should change to 03E7 that's 999.

Ok the next step is kind of confusing, when you get the DCI to VMS program. you need to highlight the export option on the Nexus (do this by double clicking the save the wording is in blue and yellow) then input the file into the DCI to VMS folder if you already have it downloaded.

Once there you need to name the file using no more then 8 charecters. Then push enter.

Next go to windows folder and look for the file you put in at the DCI to VMS folder just remeber the name you inputed. It should have vms atached to at the end of the file.

now copy it using your edit in the windows.

Ok the next step is with the VMS_CRC (checksum program)this is a little confusing. You need to Paste that file you had in the DCI to VMS folder here in this folder.

(ok here is an example of a checksum this is not an actual checksum, but this is what they look like. $3D15)

ok you should see a old checksum ie.$3D15 changed to a new checksum ie.$a541 these are also not actual checksums. Now write down the new checksum.

Ok what you need to do next is this go back to the Nexus edit screen this is the hex editor screen.

Then input the new checksum. Which is line 0x0040 in most games Ok once you find the checksum ie. RE-CV is on line 0x0040 the 7th and 8th #'s

.ie
0x0040:00 00 00 00 00 00 15 3D 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

They should be changed in reverse order.

Say the checkum was $3D15 in the 8th # you would put 3D on on 7th # you would put 15.

You dont need to input the $

Once you do this you should save it,then start your game over and reload it. Once you have done this if everything was done correctly you should see the new results.

Ok I know this isn't that great of a faq but It's the best I can do for the time being.

I don't write faqs. So If you have any more questions.

Just email me at my new email address at bbrinkman@oceanfree.net

Hey I'm not a expert at editing hex I just know a few things,So don't ask me how to get crazy things on game saves like walk through walls and such, since mainly this editing only involves game saves and all this faq is for is to teach people the basics in hacking VMU saves.

Well i hope this helps all of you DC owners out there. I may sit down and try to make a better faq.

You cannot use this faq for your own personel use. So please e-mail me if you wish to publish this faq on your web site at bbrinkman@oceanfree.net

Also thanks to www.hkems.com & www.franken.de/users/deco/myfiles/myfiles.htm for there software.
