Someone, somewhere out there, is watching
During the long years of game starvation I experienced in the first years here in Spain, I discovered the internet. I have been an advocate of using computers in gaming for many years and hopefully there are still those who will remember my work during my membership of Wargames Development, in the field of computer aided gaming. It was therefore perfectly logical for me to explore new fields in computing as they appeared. Whilst surfing the net during those horrendously expensive phone connection days I found a games site that had a demo for a 4x space game called stars!. I downloaded it , played it and was hooked. The space strategy game of development, exploration and warfare was, for me, the finest computer game I had ever played and I am talking solo play here. I bought the full game and to my surprise found it was PBEM capable, had a huge fan base and was to my horror totally addictive. I joined 3 beginners games. WOW!!! The game rocked. Cunning, diplomacy , stress , backstabbing and hours of fun. What's more its authors fully supported the game community and were constantly updating and bug hunting.. I was lost!!! In the first year I made so many friends on the net that I lost count. Deen Woods , Matt Scuri, jeffy H. Mike Matthews etc.etc. too many to mention. To the four named and above all to Matt Scuri I owe thanks for introducing me to role play in stars. Matt's race the Howlers impressed me so much and made me laugh on so many occasions that I decided that was the stars play style I too would adopt. So I created the Furries. A cross between a bat and an ape the Furries have become an obsession to the point where my dreams of writing a book are possible in the form of a galactic history of the Furries search for "Haum". I began to form a personality and list of characters for the beasts and my alter ego Chubbybob became reality. Foul mouthed , liars, anal fixation , excreta worship and a god called Wadahee Pashid that lived in the Furries droppings were all part of the background. I have had so much fun with these creations that I cannot play stars unless I use them. They have also acquired a following in the stars community and have many requests to appear in games.. Check out the fiction section for some classic Furry tales.
Recent developments in stars add-ons to allow special setups, have led to the development of theme games. These are very much role play orientated and it was through this medium that I made contact with Paul Vernon Lydiate, stars player extraordinaire, role player, supreme diplomat and almost as daft as I am. I am currently playing in Paul's creation "Empire in decline" based on the fall of the Roman Empire in Which Chubbybob is Dux Bellorum of the eastern marches.. This is the greatest game I have ever played in. In fact there is a dangerously fine line between the game and real life ...heheheheh. EiD is also graced by my good friend Deen Woods, father oilman , Texan and insane bone ripping reptilian Lord of the Yarba. We appear to have a natural talent for having been in the same game on many occasions and always allied to the end. He is also considered a good friend whom I have never met and probably never will but a good friend never the less. Oh the wonders of the electronic world..
Finally if you have never played stars then get the demo and try it. You will not regret it.. On the other hand you might. Real life will never be the same again..?=0)
