Aquire a bat from any stage that has a bat in it. Some stages include Knuckle's Pumpkin Hill, Sonic's Pyramid Cave, and Eggman's Sand Ocean. You might want to capture a few bats, just in case your chao won't lose their legs the first time you hand them the bat (don't worry - leg loss is not permanent. You can give your chao a skeleton dog or two to make the legs re-appear again.) Once your chao loses its legs, it looks like a ghost! Yay! But you wanted more, didn't you...?

If you want your chao to have a flame ball hovering over its head, give it a few (or a bunch, it depends) of half-fish. Eventually the ball will turn a light purple/dark blue color and resemble a flame, though it will be smaller than the regular chao ball. Half-Fish can be found in Sonic's Green Forest and Tail's Hidden Base.

Your chao can wear hats! Aside from finding them (watermelon, apple, paper bag, apple, etc.) in the Black Market (where you have to pay rings to purchase them), your chao can wear eggshells, and two others can be found in two gardens. Head to chao world with either Rouge or Knuckles and start digging in the Chao or Dark Garden. The Chao garden houses pumpkins, and you can find skulls in the Dark Garden. In order to get your chao to wear a hat, you'll need to give it a skeleton dog (can be found in Knuckles' Pumpkin Hill stage). Just hand the item to your chao once it has played with a skeleton dog and it will put the hat on automatically. Note: Giving your chao a skeleton dog can reverse the effects the bat or half-fish had on the chao, which means your chao can gain its legs back or lose the flaming ball.
