More Keening?
It should be noted that an additional Keening ability, the fourth level Spectral Song, was published in The Sea of Shadows supplement.
Ends of Empire?
Although Ends of Empire was very well done way to end the Wraith line, we do disagree with a few bits of what happened after the Empire. This is but one possible way for the Chanteurs to have gone, of course. Ah, roleplaying. Another fabulous suggestion is the Symphonist’s Guild, as written by JL Williams and avaliable on the Wraith Project website. The worlds are full of possibilities. Here's our ideas. Tweak as needed.
After the destruction of Stygia in the Maelstrom, the Chanteur’s Guild was thought shattered. Miklos had betrayed Stygia and fled to his would-be patron in the Jade Empire. In the new order, individual Chanteurs were always accepted, but as a whole, the Guild was finished.
Or so they want you to believe.
As the Melponians had suspected, Miklos, and a few other Guild members, had struck deals that ultimately helped themselves more than the Guild as a whole. It was a flagrent violation of the Guild Laws to put oneself before the Guild, and as a result, Miklos was relieved of his position as Guildmaster. It was more of a symbolic gesture, however, since he had long since fled for the Jade Kingdom. Word somehow reached him with his new “patron” that if he ever returned to the Iron Kingdom, he would be destroyed on sight. He never went back to Stygia.
Carmen Chantel was not as lucky. She had sensed something great about the Mnemoi Guild, and offered them help to once again gain respect and power in Stygia. She also used the Solicitors, primarily her lover who was in a key Cabal position, to crack into the Mnemoi and try to discover their secrets and increase her own power within wraith society. The Mnemoi willingly accepted her offer. After Charon was reborn, they promptly turned Chantel over to the Chanteurs; ultimately, they had no use for a backstabber, particularly a flighty one like Chantel. Chantel was tried for the same rule-breaking Miklos had tried. With much glee, the Chanteurs tossed her into the Tempest just before the Sixth Great Maelstrom hit. Some whisper they have since seen her as a Spectre, but quite a few witnesses to her execution saw her torn apart in the massive wave of darkness.
Post-malestrom, and as always, the surviving, wandering troubadours of Keening began to organize in some form again. It started as an informal circle, exchanging information and help for fellow former Chanteurs. The First Rule was still in power among the old Chanteurs, because it had always and ultimately been to their benefit.
Eventually, the head of the Melponians, the only high-ranking Guild official not killed in the Maelstrom, returned to the Guild after being stranded in her homeland of Ireland during and after the Maelstrom. Pleased that the Guild was more or less together again, the Melponian put herself in charge and began loosely re-organizing it. The only branch reformed in this new version were Clio’s Chosen, now called simply the Chosen, since the wraiths never had more of a need to have history preserved. The Three Rules were again put into effect by the Guild.
The Guild made one very major change. Seeing the progress the Melponians had made in secret, the reformed Chanteurs decided that the Guild would remain hidden from the public eye for the time being. The Guild could meet secretly, but the organization would not exist. If a Chanteur was ever asked, the Guild was simply gone. It would remain that way until the Chanteurs returned to the positions of power they held so dear...
