Wraith: The Oblivion

“The forgiveness process in you is not forgiving someone for what they did to you. It's you wanting to release the part in you that makes you feel hurt.”
-- Dr. Edith Eva Eger, Holocaust survivor

“Rachel,” called the voice from behind the door. “Come out. You need to eat.”

Rachel rolled over miserably in bed. “I’ll eat later,” she said quietly.

“You said that yesterday. You’ll only get worse,” the nun urged. She tried to open the door, but Rachel had jammed a chair beneath it. It wouldn’t hold for long. But it would hold long enough to give Rachel a couple of more minutes to herself.

Rachel struggled to sit up. She had never gained back the strength she had lost in the camps. And her illness made her still more frail. Walking was a chore, as was breathing. She ate very little, because she grew tired quickly when sitting upright. The only things that had kept her alive were her faith. Her faith, and her brother and sister.

Rachel knew, somewhere deep in her heart they must be alive. She had to find them again. Her little brother Josef needed her to watch over him. Her sister, Ester, never could handle him very well; she was more interested in boys and looking pretty than her family.

Still, Rachel missed her very much.

“Rachel!” A second voice joined the first outside the door. It was Mother Superior. “Come out of there now! You’re going to be in big trouble, young lady.”

Rachel slid out of the bed, her legs nearly collapsing as they struggled to hold her weight. Slowly and carefully, she got into a kneeling position against the bed.

“Please God. I am suffering. I miss Ester and Josef. Please let me see them again…”

The chair scraped across the floor as the two nuns slowly pushed the door open.

“Please,” she said, and suddenly a strong feeling came into her heart. Her last remaining reserved of physical, mental, and spiritual strength. With all her might, she said, “God, take me away from this place.”

Her prayers were soon answered. She died two days later

Life and Death: Born in Poland a few years before the German invasion, Rachel was rounded up with the rest of her Jewish family to be sent to a concentration camp. Rachel lost track of her family completely in the process, although she later confirmed the fact that her father and mother died while imprisoned. Rachel somehow survived, but she caught a crippling respiratory ailment while in the camp from which she never recovered. After her rescue, she was send to an orphanage in the Polish countryside that was run by a convent of nuns. Although they tried to convert her several times to Catholisicm, she refused up until she died. She always wondered about her older sister and younger brother, who also might have survived, but she never found out about their fates. Finally, she succumbed to her ailment in late 1951.

Rebirth: Somehow, Rachel lost 50 years of time in a kind of limbo. After wandering around Chicago, trying to find a way out, Rachel was harvested by Foenix, a local Legion leader, who made her his Thrall and took her across the Tempest to live in his mansion near the Onyx tower. For some reason, he treated her kindly and took advantage of her quick learning to bring her up to speed in the modern world. She was finally reunited with Lithiano, a cop she had befriended in Chicago, and the two set out to unravel the mystery of who Foenix was and what he had to do with several uprisings and Spectre sightings in the nearby district.

Personality: Very quiet, naïve, and shy. However, she is also quite intellegent, speaking several languages and becoming knowledgable in several specialties. She is very hestitant to get into violent situations, and will try to talk her way out of problems rather than fight. However, she has a very dry wit which can sting just as badly as any physical blow she could deal.

Fetters:

Brother (3) – Her younger brother, for who Rachel cared deeply. She always looked after him as a baby; when he was bullied, she did her best to put a stop to it. The last place she saw him was in her father’s arms at the train station she and her family were separated at.

Sister (2) – Rachel’s older sister was 14 when Rachel saw her last. She was constantly doted on by her mother, since she was not only the oldest, but also very pretty. Although they fought often, since her sister considered herself far too “mature” to play with her little siblings, Rachel still felt something of an affection for her. Rachel last saw her sister in the camp, just before the camp was moved to another location.

Menorah (2) – Hanukkah was always Rachel’s favorite time of the year; she loved the stories and traditions. The oil-burning menorah that her family used had been in their family for five generations, making it very special. Rachel and her brother once snuck out onto the streets during the banishment of the Jews to look for oil so her family could celebrate.

Family Photo Albums (2) – Rachel’s father bought a camera shortly after her sister was born and, fancing himself an amateur photographer, took tons of pictures of her family. Before the Nazis came to take her family away, her father hid the albums in a tin box in the ruins of a bombed out building.

Grandmother’s Necklace (1) – It was always worn by Rachel’s beloved grandmother. Since her older sister was not interested in it, it would have been passed on to Rachel one day.

Passions:

Find her family (Love) (4) – Always close to not just her immediate family, but her extended one as well, Rachel always felt loved. When her family was taken from her, she had nothing left.

Revenge her family (Hate) (3) – She rarely ever hurt anyone, but with the loss of those she loved, Rachel felt truly lonely for the first time in her life. She knows she can never have them all back, and so feels a deep hatred towards those who took them away.
