EBC Recent News

April 1, 1904

EBC welterweight champion Jimmy McLarnin (Chmp) will defend his title against canadian Donnie Poole (#5) at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on May 5, 1904. Everyone is clamouring for a rematch with Ray Leonard already, but McLarnin decides to take on the lightly regarded Poole.

EBC junior middleweight champion Sandro Mazzinghi (Chmp) will defend his title against Tadashi Mihara (#5) at the Polivalenta Hall in Romania, on May 12th, 1904. Mihara is coming off back to back losses to (#1) contender John Mugabi, so perhaps the italian feels Mihara is a soft touch. Reason enough to hold the fight in Romania it appears.

April's rookie class in the EBC consists of: Heavyweight Jake Kilraine. Light heavyweight Ramzi Hassan. Middleweight Elgin Moore. Welterweight Vispi Banaji and lightweight Kenny Bogner.

April 1904 is here! Rankings and schedule soon!

Perennial heavyweight contender Gunboat Smith (#4) wins a unanimous decision over Rex Layne (#22) by a hair. Smith gets the jab going in the 2nd, but Layne does some nasty work inside in the 3rd. In round 4 Layne connects with a beautiful flush right hand that stops Smith in his tracks, allowing Rex to visit a world of hurt upstairs onto the Gunboat. Smith lands a couple flush right hands of his own in the 5th, but Layne keeps the pressure on in the 6th and 7th, landing the occasional huge right hand. Layne is outworking Smith in the 8th, when Gunboat pushes Layne off then lands a perfect combination that floors the man from Utah for a 6 count just as the round ends. Layne still comes forward in the 9th and 10th, and it's Smith who looks tired. In the 11th Smith takes advantage of Layne's own stamina problems, but half way through the final round Layne strings together a flurry. Smith tightens it up, but Rex obviously takes the round. The unanimous decision goes to Gunboat Smith 114-113 twice and 116-111. The knockdown makes all the difference and for the second fight in a row, the wily Smith barely defeats a dangerous slugger who was a big underdog.

Light heavyweight David Telesco (#8) wins a unanimous decision over Julio Gonzalez (#7) in a mild upset. Telesco dominates the opening frame, attacking the body well and Dave staggers Julio with a left hook late in the round. Julio comes back with 2 flush right crosses in the 2nd that have David backpedaling. Late in round 5 Telesco lands a smashing left hook that floors Gonzalez for a 3 count. Julio bounces back in round 6, making Dave miss and making him pay. David staggers him with a flush right hand and a perfect uppercut in round 7, but Julio opens the 8th with a pair of haymakers that almost have Dave taking a knee. Dave comes out for the 9th with a swelling eye, and the action slows down. Gonzalez just hammers Dave in the final round, but the final cards show David Telesco as the winner by a point or two all around.

Welterweight Michele Palermo (#5) wins a razor close split decision over Colin Jones (#7) in 10 rounds. Right away Jones hits him low, bringing a warning from referee Cavanaugh, and then Jones tears into Palermo while he's still feeling the effect of the southern blow. Palermo flurries in the 3rd, but Jones lands a huge hook at the bell. Jones again has Michele on the run after some hooks upstairs in the 4th, but Palermo sucks it up and hurts Jones with a body shot late in the 5th. Jones looks pretty tired in the 6th, and Palermo takes full advantage beating him to the punch. Jones appears refreshed in the 7th, hammering Palermo with the right hand while Michele picks up a warning for a low blow. Palermo's right eye swells, while Jones takes the 8th with power shots. Jones looks punched out in the 9th, when Palermo hurts him with a right cross. With 30 seconds left they trade hard uppercuts, but they both finish on their feet. Michele Palermo takes the controversial split decision by a single point.

Welterweight Kazuhiko Hidaka (#10) scores a 6th round TKO of overmatched Tom Moriarty (#11). Moriarty lands a hard hook in the opening round, but Hidaka lands a series of power punches in round 3 that leaves Moriarty bleeding from the nose. Hidaka continues his assault in the 4th, and Moriarty's nose again drips crimson and his left eye swells. Moriarty lands a huge uppercut in the 5th, but Hidaka attacks the body well late in the round. Hidaka begins to absolutely demolish Moriarty in the 6th, and Tom is dropped by a left hook for a 3 count late in the round. Hidaka lands a couple more power shots before referee Walcott calls the match. Hidaka by TKO in 6.

EBC heavyweight champion Zora Folley (Chmp) fights to a majority draw in 15 rounds with Tommy Farr (#3) to retain his belt. They trade power hooks at ring center in the 1st justifying the hype, but Folley clearly takes the 2nd when they both hang outside sharpshooting the jab. Farr wins round 3 with quick jabs and a couple nice flurries. Folley does an amazing job of making Farr miss then countering in round 4, and Tommy, who is no clumsy slugger, never lays a glove on him. Round 5 is more of the same except that Tommy lands a flush right hand which Zora shrugs off. Tommy does a good job of attacking the body in round 6, which slows Zora and plants his feet. Round 7 the action slows right until Folley explodes a big flurry on Farr with 30 seconds left in the round. Farr sleepwalks through the 8th, and the fast handed champion makes him pay. Neither man is willing to mix it up in the 9th, but Folley looks amazing leading a wild exchange at ring center in the 10th. Farr jabs, and shucks, and jives, then cranks up the power shots to dominate the action in the 11th. Round 12 is close until Folley lands a 3 punch combination that buckles Farr's knees. Folley seems a bit punched out so Farr throws a huge variety of shots on the move in the 13th, then he staggers the champ with a couple body shots at the bell bringing them to their feet. Folley scores with a clubbing right hand and a big uppercut that put Farr in trouble in the 14th but Folley breaks a bone in his right hand. In the opening seconds of the final round Farr lands a right hand like a thunderbolt that floors the champion for an 8 count as the crowd goes absolutely crazy. Folley holds and covers up and doesn't throw another punch while Farr tries to put him away. Folley survives until the final bell with a swollen eye, and the scorecards read 144-140 for Farr and 142-142 twice a majority draw!!!! Folley keeps his title by the skin of his teeth!

Heavyweight Earnie Shavers (#10) just destroys George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey (#13) with a 7th round stoppage that could be characterized as merciful. Shavers roughs "Old Chocolate" up in the first round, including a low blow for which Earnie is warned. Earnie resumes hammering Godfrey, but George lands one nice flush right hand that staggers Earnie for a moment. Godfrey is taking the 3rd when Earnie lands one of those patented right hands which slows Godfrey down til the end of the rouned. They trade power hooks in the 4th and Godfrey is staggered by an uppercut late in the round. George is on his bicycle in the 5th, and Earnie can't catch up to him. In the 6th Godfrey hurts Shavers with a hard uppercut, but Earnie fires a sweeping overhand right that drops George for a 3 count. In the follow up Earnie lands a big left hook counter that drives Godfrey through the ropes and right out of the ring just as the bell rings! Godfrey staggers Earnie with a straight right hand early in the 7th, and Earnie responds once again with a murderous right hand that drops Godfrey for a 3 count. Shavers lobs the right hand until referee Garcia rescues Godfrey. Shavers wins for the second time over "Old Chocolate", this time by TKO in the 7th.

Former middleweight champion Albert "Buck" Crouse (#13) scores a devastating 3rd round knockout of brit Roland Todd (#14). Crouse lands a couple flush right hands in the 2nd, and some frightening shots to the body early in the 3rd. Late in the 3rd Crouse lands about 10 power punches in a row until Todd goes down. Todd gets to one knee, but he collapses to the deck at 9 so Crouse gets the knockout.

Lightweight Arthur Douglas (#3) wins a close unanimous decision over Paddy DeMarco (#8) in 10 rounds. Douglas does a good job of beating the Billygoat to the punch in the first half of the fight. Arthur staggers him in the 8th with a hard right hand, but DeMarco comes alive in the final round. Douglas takes the unanimous decision by a couple points.

Former EBC middleweight champion Freddie Apostoli (#6) wins a close but unanimous deicision over Tommy Freeman (#4) in 12 rounds, a rematch of a draw Apostoli lands a nasty counter left late in the opening round, and he just opens up with the power shots in round 3 which makes Freeman cover up. Tommy makes the adjustment on the range in the 4th, and Apostoli is on the run late in the 5th from a right hand. Round 6 is a round of the year candidate that sees both men hurt, and Apostoli is bleeding from a cut near his right eye afterward. Apostoli's corner locks it up between rounds, and Freeman has a nice flurry in the 8th. Apostoli staggers Tommy with a flush counter left hook in the 9th, and though Apostoli is bleeding again after the 10th Freddie does the nicer work. Freeman is in trouble again in the 11th, when Freddie stings him with another flush right hand. The final round is a snoozer, and the unanimous decision goes to Apostoli by a couple points.

Top junior welterweight Buddy McGirt (#1) wins his rematch with Oliva (#4) by a cuts TKO in 8. McGirt dominates again from the outset, and by round 5 McGirt is throwing the right hand undisguised. Oliva is out gunned through the middle rounds, and he suffers a cut in round 8 near an eyebrow. The horribly gushing cut causes the doctor to visit and call the bout immediately for Oliva's safety. McGirt will fight for the vacant junior welterweight title by summer.

Lightweight Harry Mizler (#4) wins a unanimous decision over Davidson Andeh (#11) in a tepid matchup. After some indifferent action, Mizler takes the 4th when he strings together some punches. Andeh hurts Harry with a straight right hand in the 6th, but Mizler solidly takes the 8th when he backs Davidson onto the ropes. Mizler slickly takes the final round to cement the unanimous decision victory.

Junior lightweight Julio Pablo Chacon (#6) scores a 6th round knockout of slugger Danny Alicea (#5) in a slugfest. Chacon does some nice work in the 1st, staggering Danny with a dynamite uppercut late in the round. Danny shows a swelling in the 2nd after eating a series of jabs, but he staggers Julio with a right hand late in the round. Early in the 4th Chacon staggers Danny with a left hook, then he drops the puerto rican with a nasty uppercut. Danny's up at 7 but he's obviously badly shaken, with a badly swelling eye. In the 5th Chacon runs out of gas, punched out, and Alicea starts to land some hard punches including a body shot that freezes Chacon at the bell. Chacon lands a big hook and a body shot that drops Alicea for a 3 count late in the 6th, and then finally a left hook drops Danny for the full count just at the bell ending round 6. Chacon sucks it up and kayos the dangerous Alicea after being totally exhausted.

Light heavyweight Al Gainer (#6) wins a unanimous decision over Eric Harding (#4) in 12. It's an ugly wrestling affair early, and Gainer staggers Harding in the 3rd with a counter left hook. Both men go into the trenches, warring on the inside in the middle rounds with no clear winner. Gainer solidly wins the 7th when Harding starts to look tired, and Harding is just outworked in the 8th. Harding flurries again in the 10th, and Gainer sleepwalks through the final 2 rounds thinking he has a lead though he does cut Harding on his forehead in the 11th. Gainer takes the unanimous decision based mostly on his early work in the bout to beat Harding for the second time.

Middleweight Jock McAvoy (#7) ices Kelly Pavlik (#9) with a 6th round knockout. Pavlik does most of the work in the 1st, but McAvoy staggers him with a right hand at the bell. Pavlik lands the right hand a bunch of times in the 2nd, and McAvoy's eye starts to swell early. McAvoy flurries in round 5, then he lands an uppercut in a clinch that drops the suddenly helpless Pavlik for the full 10 count.

Junior welterweight Diosbelys Hurtado (#3) scores a first round knockout of Dorin Spivey (#2) in a quick one. Late in the opening round, Spivey walks into a perfect right hand that drops him for the full count.

Lightweight Jose Luis Ramirez (#15) scores a 4th round knockout of Eddie Carroll (#13) in one that wasn't close. Ramirez takes some of the starch out of Carroll with a resounding combination downstairs in the 1st, but Eddie staggers Jose in the 2nd with a right hand. Ramirez drops Carroll for an 8 count with a beautiful uppercut in the 3rd, then he scores a flash knockdown on Eddie, who is in bad trouble, as the round ends. Late in round 4 Ramirez scores with a tremendous hook right on the button, that stretches Carroll for the full 10 count.

Welterweight Jimmy McLarnin (#1) wins the vacant EBC welterweight strap with his 7th round cuts TKO of "Sugar" Ray Leonard (#2) in a rematch. McLarnin lands a nice flush combination in the opening seconds and Ray retreats the rest of the 1st round, and Ray is cut on the forehead in the 2nd from a McLarnin hook. Ray is slickly taking the 3rd with his fast hands when McLarnin lands a huge uppercut that wobbles Ray right onto the ropes bleeding again from the cut. Ray plays defense so McLarnin does enough to take round 4, but round 5 is too close to call. Ray lands a body shot in round 6 that backs off McLarnin, but then Jimmy lands a very low blow that costs him a point. After a 5 minute rest for Ray, McLarnin lands a double left hook early in round 7 which reopens Ray's cut forehead and the blood really flows. The doctor stops by for a house call and he stops the fight for Ray's safety as he's blinded badly by the gushing cut. Jimmy McLarnin wins the vacant EBC title and he avenges a decision loss to Ray.

Heavyweight prospect James J Corbett (#16) scores a one punch knockout of Phil Mercurio (#20) in the 3rd round of their bout. Corbett begins to make Mercurio look absolutely amateur in the very first round, staggering him at the bell with a right hand. Corbett wobbles him again with a right hand in the 2nd, but mostly he throws an impressive array of quick punches for which Phil has no answer. Halfway through round 3 Corbett scores with a perfect left hook and Mercurio goes down for the full count. Corbett scores a one punch knockout with his "lack of" power.

Light heavyweight Tommy Loughran dominates Dave Davis over 10 one-sided rounds. After a feeling out round, Loughran starts to score with the jab and Davis can't do much in round 2. Loughran really finds his rhythm in the 3rd, and Davis literally doesn't lay a glove on him. Davis does some nice footwork and adjusts his timing to take round 6, but it's the high water mark as Loughran again befuddles Davis in the 7th and 8th. Loughran cruises the rest of the way hammering Davis from the outside. Loughran obviously takes the unanimous decision by a mile.

Junior lightweight Michael Gomez (#1) wins an 8th round TKO of Thongberm Lukmatulee (#4) when the thai breaks his right hand. Gomez begins to hammer Lukmatulee immediately, and by the middle of round 3 Thongberm has a swelling on his left eye. Gomez appears to be accelerating late in the 3rd when Lukmatulee drops Michael with an uppercut for a 6 count. The round ends with no further punches but Gomez staggers back to his corner bleeding from the mouth. Gomez pulls it together to resume his aggressive destruction of Lukmatulee in the 4th, and after the 5th Lukmatulee is badly fatigued and his left eye is virtually closed. Gomez drops him Thongberm in the 6th with a huge right cross, and the referee is close to stopping it. Gomez staggers him with an uppercut, then breaks one of Lukmatulee's ribs with a body punch late in the 7th. Lukmatulee's bad luck culminates in round 8 when he unleashes a hard right hand to Gomez' forehead that shatters 2 bones in Thongberm's right hand causing the referee to stop the contest in the opening seconds of round 8.

Light heavyweight Lloyd Marshall (#5) dominates Charley Belanger (#10) over a 12 round unanimous decision win. Marshall tears into Charley half-way through round 2, and Belanger is in pretty bad trouble at the end of the round. Round 3 is close, and both men receive warnings for fouls. Marshall hurts Belanger with a flush hook in the 4th, then he attacks the body with gusto late in the round. Marshall picks up another warning in the 5th, but he also pummels Belanger on the ropes. Marshall handily wins the middle rounds, and Belanger's right eye shows some damage. Belanger scores with a hard right hand in the 9th, but Marshall returns fire and a nice exchange ensues. In the 10th Marshall holds and hits and staggers Belanger with a big right, and he drops Belanger for a 7 count in the final round. Charley figures out a way to finish on his feet and so Marshall takes the unanimous decision going away.

Cruiserweight Jose Luis Rivera (#4) wins a unanimous decision over Turan Bagci (#5) in 12 rounds. Early in round 2 Rivera nails him with a pair of uppercuts that put Bagci in deep, and a huge right hand that drops Bagci for a 6 count. Rivera pummels the turk for the full round and referee Vann is close to stopping it. Rivera does some great body work in round 4, but Bagci lands a right hand that staggers the clevelander at the bell. Rivera backs Bagci into a corner early in the 5th, but Turan lands a series of counter hooks that force Rivera to back off while staggering. Rivera drops Bagci late in the 6th for a 7 count, but Bagci blasts to the body in the 7th forcing Rivera to hold and grimace in pain. Rivera tightens it up and takes the 8th, but Bagci roughs him up in the 11th. Round 12 is anticlimactic and the scorecards show a Rivera unanimous victory by a mile.

Welterweight Donnie Poole (#8) knocks off highly ranked Soldier Bartfield (#3) by unanimous decision in 10 rounds. Poole lands a nasty uppercut late in the 3rd, he follows up with a couple nice hard right hands in the 4th, producing a mouse by one of Bartfield's eyes. Poole staggers him again in the 5th with a right hand, but Bartfield finally unwraps his offense to make the round close. Poole takes a bit of a misstep during some of the rough stuff in round 6, and slightly twists his ankle which reduces his mobility quite a bit. They slug at ring center in the 8th, and Poole seems to get the best of it. Poole grits his teeth and takes the final 2 rounds, and the unanimous decision victory.

Junior middleweights Mamadou Thiam (#6) and Kirino Garcia (#5) fight to a messy 10 round draw. Thiam takes the 1st with his aggressive work, but they bang heads and Mamadou's eye bruises and swells immediately. Thiam hurts Garcia again in the 2nd, and round 3 is a classic slugfest of the highest order. Garcia takes the 4th with a ferocious body attack, and Thiam's eye starts to give him some problems. Garcia is just teeing off with the right hand in round 5, when he breaks it on Thiam's forehead which slows Kirino way down. Garcia slows the action down in the 6th, but he lands a flush uppercut that sends Thiam drunkenly tottering about the ring looking for his legs for the rest of the round. Thiam does some nice work on the inside in round 7, but Garcia has him on unsteady legs again in the 8th. They clash heads again in the 9th, and this time Garcia is cut. Kirino desperately tries to get some offense going after that, which allows Thiam to counter well. Garcia lands a flush right hand early in the final round, but Thiam explodes an amazing flurry for the last minute of the contest. The final scorecard shows a draw 96-94 for Garcia, 95-95, and 98-92 for Thiam.

Heavyweight Henry Akinwande (#9) scores a hotly contested stoppage over Cleveland Williams (#5) in 4 rounds. Akinwande scores with a nice right hand that staggers Cleve in round 2, and early in round 4 Henry drops the texan with a body punch. Williams is up at 3 but Akinwande drops him again with an uppercut late in the round and this time Williams is down for a 9 count. referee Davey Pearl asks Williams if he's OK. Cleve says yes, but staggers a step to his left causing referee Pearl to stop the contest. Henry Akinwande wins an upset TKO over the dangerous but dreadfully inconsistent Big Cat in 4 rounds, his second win in just under 2 weeks.

In a battle of perennial fringe contenders, heavyweight Larry Middleton (#14) wins a split decision over Amos Johnson (#18) in 10 rounds. Middleton starts fast and Johnson has trouble warming up, and Larry's world class defense befuddles Johnson in the 2nd. Middleton continues to outbox and outwork Johnson in the 3rd, and Amos suffers a cut on his forehead. Johnson wakes up to produce a nice close round 4, but Middleton returns to teaching Johnson boxing in the 5th. Johnson looks good being aggressive in the 6th, but Middleton again sets to outworking Johnson on the outside. Johnson's cut reopens in the 8th, which makes both men to go on the attack in the 9th. The final round is very close, and the final scorecards read 99-92 for Middleton and shockingly 96-96 for a split decision win for Larry Middleton.

Super middleweight Robert Stieglitz (#8) defeats former champ Syd Vanderpool (#4) with a unanimous decision in 10. After 2 minutes 30 of a snooze, Stieglitz lands a gigantic uppercut that drops the former champ for a 7 count. Stieglitz has Vanderpool in trouble again in the 2nd with a couple flush left hooks, and Syd's eye starts to puff up. Vanderpool dominates the 5th, hurting Robert upstairs with right crosses. Stieglitz lands a beautiful combination in the 7th that wobbles Vanderpool, and round 9 is a razor close thriller. Stieglitz buckles Vanderpool's knees right at the final bell. Stieglitz wins the bout 97-93 twice and 97-94.

Middleweight Frank Tate (#11) scores a 5th round TKO over Billy Angelo (#12) in a fight that Angelo was winning on the unofficial scorecard. After an action packed but dead even 1st round, Angelo stings Tate early in the 2nd with 2 combinations upstairs. Tate does some nice work upstairs in the 4th, and Angelo's eye starts to mouse up. Tate has Angelo on the run in the 5th, when Frank breaks his left hand on Angelo's rock hard skull. Instead of folding Tate starts firing the right hand and Angelo is out on his feet when the referee rescues the tough italian. Tate scores a TKO in a comeback victory.
