April 30, 1904

EBC - Westfalen Halle - Dortmund, Germany
CW(T-R3)Jean-Marc Mormeck (#1, 12-3-0, 9KO) TKO6 Sebastiaan Rothmann (Chmp, 11-5-0, 7KO)
HWHenry Akinwande (#6, 9-3-2, 6KO) W12 Tony Thompson (#8, 11-5-2, 2KO)
CW(R2)Jose Luis Rivera (#2, 8-3-2, 5KO) TKO7 Donnell Wingfield (#5, 8-9-0, 2KO
LWJose Luis Ramirez (#9, 3-0-0, 2KO) W10 Eddie Linder (#8, 2-1-1, 0KO)

Former EBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (#1) regains his title with a brutal TKO of Sebastiaan Rothmann (Chmp) in 6. Mormeck lands a series of right hands in the 2nd, and round 3 is an even but action filled round. They exchange crushing right hands late in the 4th, but neither goes down. Round 5 is all action, and Mormeck lands a pair of right hands early in the 6th that floors the israeli for a 6 count. Mormeck can't miss after that and it's only a matter of time before Richard Steele stops the slaughter with 30 seconds remaining in the 6th.

Heavyweight Henry Akinwande (#6) defeats Tony Thompson (#8) in a 12 round unanimous decision. Thompson lands a big right hand that has Henry holding just a few seconds in, and Tony does a nice job out hustling the nigerian in round 3. Henry controls round 4 with his jab, though Tony lands a big body shot at the bell. Akinwande unlimbers the right hand in round 5, and Thompson suffers an eye swelling. Thompson gets aggressive again in the 6th, and Akinwande mostly holds. They trade right hands in the 7th, and Tony wobbles first. Thompson suffers a cut lip in the 8th, and Henry really opens up in the 9th after the cut reopens. Thompson feels it slipping away so he gets uber agressive in the 10th, and Henry wobbles twice. Henry attacks the body to good effect early in the 11th, then he switches upstairs and damages Tony's eye even more. Tony does a good job outworking Henry in the final round when Akinwande cautiously peeks from behind a high guard. Henry takes the unanimous decision by a couple points.

Cruiserweight Jose Luis Rivera (#2) outguns Donnell Wingfield (#5) big time to score a 7th round TKO. Rivera scores with a big left hook that drops Donnell in the 2nd for a 6 count. Wingfield lands a shot that cuts Jose in the 3rd, and the doc has a visit. Rivera punishes Wingfield in the 5th, and Wingfield staggers bleeding from an eyebrow back to his corner after the round. Rivera comes very close to finishing Wingfield in the 6th when Donnell is just looking for a place to fall at the bell. Jose throws right hands and uppercuts until Wingfield is finally rescued late in round 7. Rivera by TKO.

Lightweight Jose Luis Ramirez (#9) tires late, but holds on to win a split decision over Eddie Linder (#8) in 10 rounds. There isn't much action in the 1st, however Linder buries a great body punch that cracks 2 of Ramirez's ribs. Round 2 is close, but Ramirez staggers Eddie with an uppercut. Jose lands a nice hook in the 5th that drops Linder for a 4 count, but Linder takes the 7th and 8th when Ramirez is a bit punched out. Linder is winning the 9th when Ramirez lands a pair of flush shots. After a tepid final round the scorecards read a razor close 95-94, 94-95 and 96-95 for Jose Luis Ramirez. Jose more or less runs out of gas, but wins the fight based on his early savagery.

WWMilton McCrory (#2, 6-1-0, 5KO) KO3 Vic Cardell (#12, 2-1-0, 0KO)

Former EBC super middleweight boss Antwun Echols (#1) scores a 4th round knockout of now former champ Bryant Brannon (Chmp) in a quick one. Echols wastes no time, hammering the champ with right hands that actually start a swelling south of Brannon's left eye after the very first round. Brannon decides to trade at ring center in the 2nd, and both men are staggered once. Echols continues to land hard combinations in the 3rd, and Brannon's eye looks worse and worse. A minute into round 4, Echols lands a crushing body shot that floors Brannon, who just misses rising before the 10 count. Antwun Echols is once again the king of the super middleweight division after an emphatic win in the rubber match with his chief rival.

Middleweight Jeff Smith (#3) wins a split decision over Gene "Ace" Armstrong (#7) in 12 rounds between solid contenders. Smith does some nice work on the inside in round 2, but the first half of the fight every round is so close that no concensus can be made. Smith has a fair flurry in the 6th and a better one in the 7th. Both men flash offensive in round 9, but again no clear leader emerges. Armstrong lands a hard jab that cuts Smith inside his left eyebrow in the 10th, but Smith flurries again resulting in yet another dead even frame. Jeff lands right hand leads in round 11 finally resulting in an easy to judge round. Armstrong desperately comes forward behind right hands in the final round but Jeff cuts him to pieces with counters. As you might expect with a fight with so many close rounds, the scoring is a wildly disparate 116-112, 113-115 and 119-109 for a split decision victory for Jeff Smith.

Light heavyweight Tommy Loughran (#8) scores an 8th round TKO over Gerhard Hecht (#11) when the german suffers a broken jaw and cannot continue. Hecht hits Tommy low early in the 1st, so the now enraged Loughran tears into the german with vicious hooks. Tommy calms down and the pace normalizes for the next couple rounds, but Tommy really starts to land on the outgunned Hecht in round 4. Tommy stuns Gerhard with a picture perfect right cross in the 6th, and Hecht is completely gassed at the end of the round. Late in round 8 Loughran lands a right hand on the jaw that breaks Gerhards jaw causing him to turn away. The referee of course stops the fight immediately.

Welterweight Milton McCrory (#2) scores a sudden, convincing third round knockout over young Vic Cardell (#12). There is almost no action for 2 and a half rounds, when McCrory lands a hook that cuts Cardell on an eyebrow in the 3rd. Vic is completely distracted by the cut, actually turning to his corner, and Milt unloads a serious right hand that stretches Cardell for the full 10 count.

Heavyweight Tuffy Griffiths (#2) wins a unanimous decision over Gunboat Smith (#4) to avenge a loss to the Gunboat way back in September of 1900. The first violent thing that happens is that the pair bang heads on the inside. But then Smith lands a hard shot to the body, then Griffith a crushing right to the jaw staggering the Gunboat. Griffiths manuevers Smith into a corner and unloads right hands until Smith goes down for an 8 count. Griffiths catches him again immediately and Gunboat is down for a 5 count at the bell. Both fighters catch a breather in the 2nd, but Griffiths finds the chin of Smith with hard right hands in the 3rd. Tuffy hurts him again with a series of right hands in the 5th, and also they bang heads again in the midst of inside savagery. Smith hits him low in the 6th and has a point deducted, but Smith hurts Griffiths with a couple of right hands and one ridiculous haymaker in the 7th. Smith solidly takes the 8th, and still not a jab in sight. Griffiths lands a flush uppercut in the 9th, but Smith is still in it enough to even up the round. Smith looks great moving and countering in the 10th, but with 30 seconds left Griffiths lands a right hand that brings Smith's hands down for a few seconds allowing Tuffy to hammer Smith who nearly goes down again. Gunboat backs Tuffy into a corner in the 11th and attacks the body with gusto, but the final round is close with both men exhausted. Tuffy Griffiths takes the unanimous decision by a wider than expected margin. With Young's unexpected loss, Tuffy is certain to be #1 contender for Folley's crown when the EBC rankings for May 1904 come out.

Middleweight Tommy Freeman (#9) wins a majority decision over Frank Tate (#8) in an entertaining scuffle of 12 rounds. Round 1 is pretty even until Freeman flurries with about 20 seconds left. In round 2 Tate is working a textbook jab and right cross, when Freeman lands a hard shot to the abdomen that wobbles the texan. They trade jabs with Freeman winning a duel of fast hands in the 3rd, while Tate backs Freeman into a corner and jabs accurately in the 5th. Tate leads in a back and forth 6th, ending the round on a bolo punch fake followed by a hook, drawing cheers. Freeman solidly takes the 7th in a back and forth slugfest that sees Tommy landing uppercuts every few seconds at one point. Tommy is punched out and Frank starts to unload big right hands on him in round 8, but Freeman lands a shot that starts Tate's nose bleeding in round 9. In the 10th Tate is distracted and having trouble breathing, so Freeman opens up to the head causing an eye swelling on Tate who is becoming uglier by the minute. In round 11 they trade back and forth, bringing those in attendance to their feet. Tate is the aggressor in the final round while Tommy holds. In the end Tommy Freeman takes the majority decision 116-112- 115-115 and 115-113.

Middleweight George Benton (#11) takes a unanimous decison over Young Stuhley (#15) in 10 bloody rounds. Stuhley is more active early, until George suddenly cuts loose with 30 seconds left in the 3rd to probably snatch the round away. They go toe-to-toe in the 4th, and Benton gets away with a pretty blatant head butt as the round ends. Benton starts to time the jab and rip counter hooks upstairs in the 5th, and he catches Stuhley with a straight right hand that sends him staggering to the corner with his hands down a minute into round 6. Benton throws uppercuts while muscling Stuhley to keep him in the corner for the rest of the round, and the Young one looks relieved at sound of the bell. Stuhley recovers a bit in the 7th, landing a couple uppercuts, but then he ducks right into a Benton uppercut that causes a horrible gash on an eyebrow. Referee Hassett immediately leads Stuhley to the doctor, who says the fight may continue. They get the cut stopped before round 8, and Stuhley hangs with Benton punch for punch while the fragile repair stays intact. Benton lands a couple of flush uppercuts in the 9th, and the last one re-opens Stuhley's gushing cut eyebrow. The doc once again clears the fight to continue just as the round ends. One more time they get the cut stopped, and Stuhley comes out ready for the final round. There isn't much action in the final round, and Stuhley is not bleeding at the final bell, a tribute to his corner. Benton takes the unanimous decision 96-94 twice and 97-93 solidly. Stuhley got his title shot after a loss and hasn't won since losing his fourth straight.

Lightweight Austin Gibbons (#15) wins a majority decison over David Burke (#10) in 10 rounds. Gibbons lands a pair of flush right hands a minute into the opening round, and he just savages Burke for the rest of the round with combinations. Austin hurts Dave again with an uppercut early in the 2nd, but Burke splits the gloves with hard jabs late in the round. Gibbons lands a series of hooks to the head that leave Burke with a swollen left eye in the 3rd, and round 4 is a beaut that sees Burke hurt and staggering to the ropes only to fight back brilliantly as the round expires. Burke lands some good hooks upstairs in the 6th, but the tank is empty after that and Gibbons turns up the pressure. Gibbons lands regularly upstairs on the half-blind Burke, but he really doesn't take any chances going for the knockout so he outworks Dave just slightly until the final bell. The scorecards are a surprisingly close 96-94 twice and 95-95, a majority decision victory for Austin Gibbons.

LHWCharles Williams (#2, 14-3-2, 5KO) TKO4 Pete Cerkan (#14, 6-5-0, 2KO)

WWYoung Jack Thompson (#9, 4-3-0, 1KO) L10 Jimmy Doyle (#11, 4-1-1, 0KO)

Former EBC light heavyweight boss Prince Charles Williams (#2) survives an early knockdown to score a 4th round TKO of rough-and-tumble slugger Pete Cerkan (#14) in a wild one. In round 1 Cerkan catches the former champ cold with a series of left hooks in the first, and Williams' knee almost touches down after the hardest one. Pete bum-rushes the champ again to start round 2, and Williams goes down for a 3 count from the leaping hook. Chuck holds until the bell, and after the rest period Williams looks recovered. Charles starts to time Cerkan's bull rushes, scoring with right hand leads in the 3rd and Pete is staggered once. With a minute left in round 4 Williams lands a big right hand to the top of the head that causes Cerkan to cover up, then fall forward on his face for an 8 count. Williams backs Pete into a corner and proceeds to throw combinations until referee Adolph rescues the brave Cerkan. Prince Charles displays his champion's heart, getting off the deck to patiently take down a wild slugger that was getting the best of him.

Former EBC middleweight champ Buck Crouse (#10) wins a unanimous decision from overmatched Tommy Uren (#12) in 10 sickening rounds. There is no action to speak of in round 1, but 30 seconds into the 2nd round Crouse lands a counter combination that floors Uren for a 2 count. Tommy covers up, but he hits the canvas again for a 2 count about a minute later. Old school referee Harry Kessler says "No problem." and the fight continues, and Tommy holds the rest of the round. Crouse lands some good right hands in the 3rd, though he misses plenty too, and Uren's right eye starts to puff up. They mix it up pretty good in the 4th, but again Crouse lands the more telling blows. Buck lands a pair of uppercuts that open a gash on Uren's right eyebrow in the 5th, and Tommy is warned for a couple fouls. Crouse stuns Tommy at least 3 times from flush right crosses in round 6, and Uren has little time to do anything but cover up. Half-way through round 9 Crouse lands a 10 punch combination that floors Tommy for an 8 count. Uren is dropped by a grazing uppercut a few seconds later and Tommy barely survives to the final round. Crouse staggers him with a body shot in the final round, but it goes to the scorecards. Of course Buck Crouse wins the fight by a country mile.

Lightweight Buzzsaw Yamabe (#7) wins a unanimous decision over Jesse Flores (#14) in 10 lopsided rounds. Yamabe attacks the body to good effect early, but it's Flores who catches a warning for low blows in round 4. Yamabe staggers Flores with a hard left hook in the 5th, and Jesse has nothing left. Yamabe has his way with Flores until Jesse makes a stand in the 9th, but it's far too little and Buzzsaw Yamabe takes the unanimous decision in a near shutout.

Welterweight Jimmy Doyle (#11) wins a 10 round unanimous decision over Young Jack Thompson (#9) in an upset. The early rounds are too close to call, although Thompson wobbles Doyle briefly in the 4th with an uppercut. Thompson lands a nice combination late in round 5, and Doyle gets a little gun shy. By round 8 they are trading again and Doyle is getting the best of it this time, and Doyle flurries big in the final round. The unanimous decision goes to Jimmy Doyle, a mild upset. Thompson gives a lukewarm performance and gets out-hustled late.

EBC middleweight champion Harry Greb (Chmp) wins a unanimous decision over James Toney (#2) in 15 rounds, their third tussle in a thusfar evenly split series. Round 1 is a feeling out round, but Greb lands a beautiful flush right hand at the bell. Greb opens up in the 3rd, but James lands a nice flush left hook late in the round and Harry is warned for using his elbows. Toney strings together some nice power shots in the 6th, when James starts to retaliate with his own rough stuff. They both go at it full-tilt in the 7th, but neither is clearly the leader in the round. Greb outworks Toney in the 8th, but James flurries upstairs in the 9th. Harry comes forward behind hooks in the 10th, but he gets careless and James lands a devastating counter left hook that drops the champ for a 7 count. Toney only has time to land a couple more shots, and he looks more tired out that Greb even after the round. Harry bounces back well on the punched-out Toney in round 11, and in round 12 things get ugly. Toney hits Greb with about as blatant a head-butt as any in the history of boxing, which infuriates the champ who immediately lands a haymaker that puts Toney down for a 2 count at the bell. Referee Kessler has to restrain Harry briefly after the round and all the cornermen rush the ring. Order is restored after about 30 seconds of chaos thankfully. Harry and his amazing stamina are the difference late and he really starts to outwork the exhausted Toney in round 13. Round 14 sees Toney recover a bit and the two fight to a standstill at ring center though both of his eyes look puffy after the round. Toney does a good job of landing some hard shots while blocking Harry's wider punches in the final round. In the end it's Greb who takes the unanimous decision 145-141, 144-140 and a ridiculous 147-137 to the winner and still champ Harry Greb. Harry takes the rubber match to defend his crown against his secondary rival Toney.

Perennial fringe heavyweight contender Sinan Samil Sam (#11) scores a clean 11th round knockout of Johnny DuPlooy (#22). DuPlooy stings Sam early when Sinan shows up virtually asleep in the 1st. Sam wakes up to solidly take the 2nd, but round 3 the pace slows greatly when both fighters hold. Sam gets the right hand going in the 4th, and DuPlooy is staggered a couple times. They go toe-to-toe in the 5th, and neither man blinks despite the high number of flush shots. Johnny has a nice flurry in the 6th, and after a few ramrod jabs Sam's right eye begins to mouse up. DuPlooy is winning the 7th, when Sam staggers him with a body punch just seconds before the bell. Sam lands a couple flush shots in the 8th, and round 9 is a dead even all-action round that sees both exhausted men staggering around the ring and ready to go. Sam's eye looks terrible before the 10th, and he desperately comes forward trying to end it. A minute in Sam lands a perfect uppercut the drops the south african for a 6 count. Sam cranks up some hooks, but DuPlooy somehow makes it to the end of the round albeit with a swollen eye himself. Half way through round 11 Sam lands a deep-dish right hand that stretches Johnny for the full 10 count.

Lightweight Arthur Douglas (#2) wins a majority decision over scrappy Harry Mizler (#3) in 10 rounds. The action is heavy in round 1, and Douglas lands a nice right cross that freezes Mizler late in the round. Harry tightens up his D to take the next couple of rounds from the slow footed Douglas. Arthur lands 3 nice power punches that stagger Harry in the 5th, and he really starts to drop the right hand in round 7. Mizler tires late and Douglas easily contains him. The decision is a close one surprisingly, but it's Douglas who wins 96-94 twice and 95-95.

Lightweight Pernell Whitaker (#5) looks great winning a unanimous decision over Luis Villalta (#4) in 10 rounds. Whitaker is his usual slippery self early, and he wobbles Villalta in the 2nd with a straight right hand. Luis staggers Pernell early in the 4th, but Whitaker recovers and boxes Villalta's ears off for the rest of the round. In round 5 Luis catches a warning from the ref about leaning on Pernell, when Whitaker suddenly surprises Luis with a right hand that drops him for an 8 count. Whitaker drops him twice more in the 6th, and Luis looks like he has nothing left. Whitaker drops him for and 8 count with a body punch in round 7 and Pernell motions toward the referee to stop the fight. Referee Santore lets it continue, so Whitaker contents himself with a few more scoring shots and a tight defense until the final bell. Whitaker takes the unanimous decision by a mile.

Heavyweight Jack DeMave (#16) upsets former champion Jimmy Young (#1) with a cuts TKO that occurs with about a minute left in the fight. DeMave isn't all that aggressive, and Young is his usual slow and cautious self early. DeMave staggers the ex-champ with a right hand, then a body shot in the 5th and Young's eye swells a bit. Young goes from sleepy to downright alarmed when DeMave lands an uppercut that gashes his eyebrow in the 7th. The doctor allows the fight to continue, and Young tries his best to protect the bad cut. They get the cut closed before the 8th, and DeMave keeps the pressure on in the round. DeMave looks gassed in the 9th, and Young takes it up a notch scoring well between clinches. In round 10 DeMave lands a nice straight right hand that staggers Young and reopens the cut. Young looks grateful at first for a breather, but then the doctor calls it off for the gash that just pours blood into Young's eye. Young Jack DeMave pulls it out of the fire with about a minute left in the fight, and once again Young fights down to the level of his competition.

Junior welterweight Buddy McGirt (#1) wins a TKO victory through adversity over Diosbelys Hurtado (#2), who is game but doesn't have the stamina to make it stick. Hurtado opens the bomb bay doors right away, hammering McGirt with power right hands in the 1st and producing a round of the year candidate. The action slows from the intial scorching pace in round 2, and Hurtado staggers McGirt with a flush right hand that cuts Buddy under an eye. Diobelys catches Buddy with a right hand lead that drops McGirt for a 2 count early in the 3rd, and he lands some nice shots while Buddy is still reeling. McGirt still looks woozy in the 4th, and Hurtado staggers him every time he touches Buddy with the right hand. Buddy catches Hurtado with a nice uppercut on the inside in round 6, and suddenly it Hurtado who's eating shots and battling to stay upright. McGirt times a jab and lands a perfect left hook counter early in the 7th that floors Diosbelys for an 7 count. In the follow up McGirt swarms the exhausted Hurtado on the ropes, and after 15 straight power shots to the beezer referee Rainone finally rescues Hurtado. McGirt and gets off the deck and survives a cut scare to score a TKO on one of the better junior welterweights in the EBC.

Junior lightweight Steven Luevano (#3) wins a unanimous decision over Yoshimitsu Asato (#2) in 10 one-sided rounds. Luevano is clearly the better boxer, and he dominates the 2nd with his quicker hands. Asato lands a flush right hand in the 4th, and both fighters do some nasty headwork in the 5th which cuts Luevano inside his mouth. They get the cut stopped before the next round, and Luevano does a great job of protecting the cut while landing some good shots in the 6th and Asato's eye begins to look red and puffy. Luevano's cut reopens in the 7th, but the doctor says continue. Luevano is hammering Asato when Yoshi lands a big uppercut that stops Steven in his tracks late in the 7th. Asato is tired and sloppy in the 8th, and Luevano easily counters while blocking every punch Yoshimitsu throws. Luevano dominates the final 2 rounds on the exhausted japanese battler, and he takes the unanimous decision by a mile.

Super middleweight Merqui Sosa (#5) just destroys Anwar Oshana (#8) with an 8th round knockout. Sosa staggers Oshana twice early in the opening frame with hooks, but Oshana freezes the dominican with a body shot just before the bell. Oshana does some nasty work on the inside in round 2, and Sosa feels the blistering body attack. Late in the 4th Oshana lands a straight right that sends Sosa staggering into the ropes just as the round ends, but Merqui drops Oshana with an uppercut seconds into round 5. Anwar is up at 4, and he does a great job of covering up and countering for the rest of the round. Early in round 6 Sosa rabbit punches Oshana in a clinch, and referee Smoger penalizes Merqui a point. Both men look pretty tired before the 7th, but it's Sosa who shakes it off to land hard combinations on Oshana who's eye begins to puff up. Sosa lands a devastating double left hook in the 8th which drives Oshana into a corner, then he serves up an uppercut on the inside that floors the syrian for the full count. Sosa is victorious by 8th round knockout, and Oshana gets a one-way ticket back to the clubfight circuit.

EBC light heavyweight champion Joe Knight (Chmp) successfully defends his title with a 13th round TKO of german Henry Maske (#3) in an easier than expected fight. Maske lands a straight right that stings the champ in the opening round, and Maske has the champion holding on after a snapping hook in the 2nd. Knight starts to land the overhand right in the 4th, and Maske covers up. Knight slickly beats the german to the punch in round 5, and nobody throws more than a couple punches in the 6th. In round 7 the champion resumes tattooing the german upstairs, and he staggers Maske with a nice uppercut that cuts Henry badly on an eyebrow. This wakes Maske up a bit in the 9th, however Knight continues to hammer him. Knight lands an uppercut that reopens Maske's eyebrow in the 10th drawing a doctor's visit. Henry is allowed to continue, and the champion opens up with a thrilling flurry with 30 seconds left. Maske's cut eye begins to swell, and the german is completely exhausted allowing the champion to have his way until he floors Maske with an uppercut. Maske is up at 8 but he looks finished. Maske desperately throws right hands until he lands one that staggers the champ in the 12th and now Knight's eye swells up. Knight opens up the 13th with a snapping straight right that gets Maske's cut eyebrow bleeding again. This time the doctor stops the fight immediately. Knight defends his title with a 13th round cuts TKO.

Cruiserweight Glenn McCrory (#3) scores a 4th round knockout of Carlos Cruzat (#4), his second destruction of perennial contender Cruzat. They trade flush right hands in the 1st, and Cruzat lands a series of power shots in the 3rd which raises a small mouse under McCrory's eye. Cruzat is just crushing Glenn with hooks on the inside in round 4, when suddenly McCrory lands a crashing right hand that floors the surprised Cruzat for the full 10 count.

Super middleweight Chris Eubank (#7) wins a unanimous decision going away from former conqueror Mikkel Kessler (#3) in 12 rounds. There's a blistering exchange at ring center in the 2nd, and in round 3 Eubank does a nice job of crowding the dane and rattling him with body shots. Eubank opens up pretty good upstairs in the 4th, and Kessler has a puffy eye after the round. Round 6 is a savage shootout that leaves Kessler's eye looking worse, and Eubank presses his advantage in the 7th. Kessler's eye is nearly closed after round 8 and he looks pretty gassed. Eubank continues to hammer Kessler's swelling eye in the 10th, and Mikkel just can't see the punches coming. Kessler lands a flush right hand in the 11th, but Chris shakes it off and comes on strong hooking to Mikkel's blind side causing Mikkel to head butt Eubank drawing a warning. Chris finishes strong, stinging Kessler with a series of combinations in the final round. Eubank takes the unanimous decision in a near shutout to avenge his TKO loss to Kessler two months ago.

Junior middleweight Michael Lerma (#2) scores a convincing 7th round TKO of aussie Ernie Artango (#3). Artango starts pretty fast, moving well and countering in the opening round. Lerma comes out on top of a great exchange in the 3rd, and he staggers Ernie with a great counter left hook in the 4th. Lerma follows up a left hook with an uppercut that drops Artango for a 9 count a minute into the 5th. Ernie doesn't know where he is but referee Condon allows him to continue, so he eats more punches in the 6th. Late in the 7th Lerma catches Ernie with a sweet right cross that staggers Artango again, and gives him a black eye, and the referee steps in this time.

April 1, 1904

EBC welterweight champion Jimmy McLarnin (Chmp) will defend his title against canadian Donnie Poole (#5) at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on May 5, 1904. Everyone is clamouring for a rematch with Ray Leonard already, but McLarnin decides to take on the lightly regarded Poole.

EBC junior middleweight champion Sandro Mazzinghi (Chmp) will defend his title against Tadashi Mihara (#5) at the Polivalenta Hall in Romania, on May 12th, 1904. Mihara is coming off back to back losses to (#1) contender John Mugabi, so perhaps the italian feels Mihara is a soft touch. Reason enough to hold the fight in Romania it appears.

April's rookie class in the EBC consists of: Heavyweight Jake Kilraine. Light heavyweight Ramzi Hassan. Middleweight Elgin Moore. Welterweight Vispi Banaji and lightweight Kenny Bogner.
