Totterington Manor

The seat of the Totterington family until the death of the childless 14th Duke in 1992. It has now been converted into privately owned apartments.

Totterington Manor and Park extend to 523 acres of woods and parkland, rich in history and wildlife.  The river Ham flows through the southern edge of the Park, from the Ham Marshes.  Although much of the ancient woodland was felled by the 12th Duke during the Second World War, enough remains to make parts of the Park a Site of Special Scientific Interest. More than 80 different species of lichens have been recorded, as well as treecreepers, goldcrests, mosses, 8 of the fourteen species of British bat and all three species of woodpecker.

The present Manor was rebuilt in 1874 after a fire that destroyed much of the previous, Elizabethan, building.

The Totterington family are first recorded in the Domesday Book, and became major landowner as well as holding many positions of public office. During the Civil War, the catholic Lord Totterington supported the Royalist cause. The battle of Sourby Moor was a Parliamentary victory, and after it Lord Phillip Totterington was executed and the Manor was despoiled. His family fled into exile on the continent. Following the Restoration, they returned to Totterington, and gradually rebuilt the family fortune.

Not open to the public.
