Starting pitchers Kevin Millwood of D/O and Randy Johnson of Hobbs/Vaughn were in control early. David Cone and Andy Ashby relieved Millwood with 2 scoreless innings of relief and after Kevin Brown relieved RJ with an additional inning with no scoring, it was 0-0 after 4.
John Smoltz took over in the 5th, and after getting Ken Griffey to fly out, he allowed a double off the fence to Jay Bell and then a walk to Brian Giles. Nomar Garciaparra greeted reliever Armando Benitez with a gap double that scored both runners, as Anderson's throw was late. After Piazza grounded out, Larry Walker was intentionally passed to face Dean Palmer. D/O manager Michael Cha, (subbing for Joe Sheehan) sent up Robin Ventura to hit, and H/V manager Larry LaRochelle countered with Mariano Rivera, who got Ventura on strikes to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 5th, Scott Williamson came on for D/O and got Edgar Martinez to groundout and Manny Ramirez to flyout. But after Brady Anderson reached on an infield single off the glove of Ray Durham, Barry Larkin tied the game with a long two-run shot to left. Roberto Alomar followed with a single, and Chipper Jones send a double to deep right that scored Alomar from first on the throw from Walker.
Rivera pitched a scoreless inning in the 6th, and Jeff Shaw followed suit. Pedro Martinez came on in the 7th for the Hobbs/Vaughn stars, and pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th, while Trevor Hoffman and Doug Brocail were doing the same for Davis/O'Neil.
In the top of the ninth, with Martinez still on the hill, Griffey walked. Alfonzo, hitting for Durham, slapped a hit and run grounder to Alomar's left, which Robby was able to snag for the play at first, with Griffey moving up. The ploy worked to perfection as Bernie Williams followed with a two-base single to tie the game. Pedro got Jeter to hit into a double play to end the threat.
Keith Foulke came on in the bottom of the ninth, getting Pudge Rodriguez to ground out to Alfonzo on a spectacular play. David Nilsson, hitting for Randy Velarde, walked, and after Piazza dove to snare a foul popup by Manny Ramirez, Brady Anderson kept the inning alive with another free pass. It was up to Omar Vizquel, and he didn't disappoint the 44,375 in attendance at Sockalexis Stadium in Casco Bay, as he drove a liner to the fence for a double, scoring Nilsson from second for the 4-3 victory.
Pedro Martinez got the win and Keith Foulke the loss. Barry Larkin and Omar Vizquel were named co-MVPs for their hitting exploits, and the Hobbs/Vaughn Stars got their revenge for the spanking administered to them in 1999.
